Lesson Plan Format
Goal(s):
Students analyze, make inferences and draw conclusions about theme and genre in different contexts
and provide evidence from the text to support their understanding.
Objective(s):
-TLW identify moral lessons as themes in well-known fables
-TLW compare different versions of the same story in respect to their characters, setting, and plot
Instructional Procedures
Focusing Event:
Tell a story of how my parents will tell me not to touch the stove when it was hot because I was going to
get burned, but curiosity always won. After placing my hand on the stove, my hand burned, and my
mother will run to put tomato on it or my dad will grab toothpaste and rub some on my hand. I learned
that I should listen to adults when they warn me about a situation because they have probably already
gone through it; Adults have more wisdom than a child.
Teaching/Learning Procedures:
Gather the students in the reading area
Explain the vocabulary words
Have a three-column chart displayed with the title of the fable “The Tortoise and the Hare”
Place the video song of the fable (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1H9EPBLESco)
In the first column write song video
o Have students Think-pair-share the main characters, setting, and what plot was
Before doing this, play some background song and when the song stops they are
to pair with someone (do minimum of 2 times)
o Write the answers given down on the manila paper
Display the poem of the fable on the projector and write poem on the second column
o Use Inside-Out Circle for students to share thoughts
Place background music for them to rotate in the circle. When the music stops
they pair with the person in the opposite circle
o Write answers given down on manila paper
Handout a copy of the reading of the fable
Students are to sit in their desks and work independently
Write reading in the third column of the manila paper
As students read, pass out sticky notes where they are to write the characters, setting and plot
they believe
o When the student is done writing their answers, they are to stick the sticky paper under
the column
Closure:
Repeat the moral lesson of the fable individually and as a class while clapping hands together in a beat
Assessment/Summative Evaluation:
At the end of this unit, the students in their test will be given a short story, and they are to identify what
genre/theme it is.
Modifications/Notes
The fable should be in between all reading levels in the classroom for all the students to comprehend
the reading—not to easy for the higher reading levels and not to difficult for the readers in the lower
levels.
Also, if doing a different story, the fable must have a song and poem apart from the reading.
