(B) Future Research Proposals

(1) Five years research proposal for Advanced Modelling of Next Generation
Gas Turbine Combustion Systems: Development of a computational tool for the
simulation of gas turbine swirl flow dynamics, gaseous and spray combustion,
emissions, combustion generated noise and instabilities: This work mainly focuses to
address both fundamental and design driven applied research of particular interest to
next generation gas turbine combustion design community. The ultimate goal of this
work is to establish a perfect platform for advanced modelling of next generation gas
turbine combustors for enhancing performance, operability and emissions while
reduce the gap between academic and industrial communities. The author submits this
proposal to Royal Academy of Engineering/EPSRC Research Fellowship programme.
The author has close relation with Computational Combustion Groups at Rolls-Royce
Plc. and ALSTOM power generation and hence he seeks to work closely with
industrial partners.

(2) PhD research topic: Large eddy simulation of turbulent multiphase

combustion: Progress towards application of the large eddy simulation (LES)
technique to turbulent multiphase combustion processes is continuously growing as
LES can provides a means to study coupled combustion, transport and multiphase
processes. This work focuses the modelling of flow fields include more than one
phase (gas and liquid) such as those encountered in gas turbines, liquid fuel rocket
engines, diesel engines and industrial furnaces. The author submits this proposal to
EPSRC.

(3) PhD research topic: Investigation of combustion instabilities using large eddy
simulation: Lean premixed (LP) combustion has been widely adopted for the modern
gas turbine engines combustors as it can reduce pollutant emissions such as
NO x while increase combustion intensity, shorter flame lengths and better fuel
burnout. The motivation of this work is to study the characteristics of combustion
instabilities for lean premixed flames for different geometrical configurations under
various conditions. LES will be used as a numerical technique, because of the
inherent unsteadiness of all the important processes, both spatial and time accuracy is
essential in the simulation strategy. The author submits this proposal to EPSRC.
(4) The author also like to introduce few MSc research topics under Computational
Fluid Dynamics (CFD) category, which include the structured and unstructured grid
generation, finite volume method for convection/diffusion problems, theoretical
investigation for large eddy simulation.

(C) Research Interest

(1) Numerical Methods for Direct numerical simulations and Large-eddy simulations.

(2) Modelling of Turbulent Premixed/Non-Premixed/Partially-Premixed Combustion.

(3) Advanced modelling of Swirl Stabilized Gas Turbine Combustion Systems.
