ABSTRACT

With the use of phenomenology, the researchers studied the experiences of

their respondents. The researchers also formulated the interview questions that were

answered by the respondents. The respondents answers were recorded by the

researchers in order to achieve the objectives of the study and answered the research

questions. The respondents, which were vascular disease survivors living in Imus,

Dasmariñas, and Rosario, Cavite had different ways of coping with their disease, and

not all of the survivors inherited their disease. The respondents, not having any

common gender and age, gave advise to keep a healthy lifestyle in order to minimize

the risk of having vascular disease.

CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Various illnesses in the Philippines are among the top killers causing more than

half of all deaths annually such as asthma, chronic lung disease, stroke and

tuberculosis. Another illness that is also considered as one of the main top killers in

the country is Heart Disease (Bula, 2015).

Heart Disease describes a range of conditions that affects the heart. Diseases

under the heart disease umbrella include blood vessel diseases, such as heart rhythm

problems, heart defects, and lastly vascular diseases (Mayo Clinic, 2017). Vascular

Disease is the most common precursor to Coronary Heart Disease and Heart Attack.

It also causes stroke by affecting the arteries in your neck (Circulation Foundation,

2017).

The main challenge in the Philippines is how to reach the Filipinos with heart

disease specifically vascular disease. During the 47th Annual Convention of Philippine

Heart Association (PHA) in 2016, according to Dr. Jorge Sison, overall chair of the

event mentioned that 60-70 percent of Filipinos have not been treated or seen by a

cardiologist. Aside from that, Sison cited that Filipinos also deal with the burden of

healthcare cost.

Given the mortality rate, this study aimed to give awareness about the effects

caused by vascular disease, to help those who are suffering from this disease and to

1
St. Edward Integrated School

learn how people who suffers from this disease would be able to cope with their social,

financial and psychological problems or concerns.

The increasing mortality rate caused by heart disease is very alarming, and is

crucial that the people should be aware about what are the causes of this type of

illness. This study can provide information and recommendations for those who are

experiencing the burden of having this kind of illness living in Imus, Dasmariñas and

Rosario, Cavite.

2
St. Edward Integrated School

Background Of The Study

Vascular Disease is any abnormal condition of the blood vessels which is

arteries and veins. The body uses blood vessels to circulate blood through itself.

Problems along this vast network can cause severe disability and death.

Vascular Disease as a consequence of atherosclerosis results in a wide range

of conditions making up the cardiovascular and peripheral vascular diseases.

Vascular disease is, without question, the current leading cause of morbidity and

premature deaths of modern era medicine. Likewise, it is one of the primary causes

of disability (Rodriguez, 2016).

The researchers would like to know the experiences of the survivors who

underwent this kind of illness. The researchers also would like to know what did the

survivors felt after being diagnosed with heart disease and how did they cope with

these given condition.

Research Questions

The researchers wanted to provide information and recommendations for those

who are experiencing and undergo vascular disease and upon conducting this study

the researchers aimed to answer the following:

1) What are the effects of vascular disease to the survivors in terms of:

a. Social Aspect;

b. Financial Aspect; and

c. Psychological Aspect

2) How do respondents overcome the struggles of having vascular disease?

3) What can the respondents advice to other people suffering from vascular

disease in terms of:

a. Social Aspect;

b. Financial Aspect; and

c. Psychological Aspect

5
St. Edward Integrated School

Research Objectives

The purpose of this study was to identify and specify problems of people with

vascular disease. The researchers objectives are:

1. To identify what are the effects of vascular disease in the survivor’s daily life.

a. Social Aspect;

b. Financial Aspect; and

c. Psychological Aspect

2. To identify the challenges that the survivor’s had experienced.

3. To provide recommendation and possible solutions to help the survivor’s cope

up in terms of:

a. Social Aspect;

b. Financial Aspect; and

c. Psychological Aspect

6
St. Edward Integrated School

Scope and Limitations

The scope and limitations of this study was first to gather information and data

from the vascular disease survivors. The researchers have interviewed the survivors

by asking questions to gather data on the coping mechanisms of the survivors who

suffered from vascular disease toward social, financial and psychological difficulties.

The interview was conducted during the month of September 2017. The researchers

have interviewed five respondents using guided questions. The gender and age of the

respondents were included in the study. This study was limited only to the survivors

of vascular disease living in Imus, Dasmariñas and Rosario, Cavite. This study only

aimed to narrate and describe the experiences of the survivors.

7

Significance of the Study

The significance of the study was for the researchers and readers to have an

awareness about the effects caused by vascular disease. This study can also give

information and recommendations to those who are suffering from the same disease.

The significance of this study can be beneficient to the respondents to have

knowledge about resolving ways to adjustments toward the condition of vascular

disease. This study can guide the survivors and the hospitals to help each other to

solve the social and psychological difficulties the survivors experiencing. Furthermore,

this study can benefit the people suffering from vascular disease, the people

specializing in the field of medicine and also for the future researchers to use this

study as their reference.

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

“Vascular” comes from a Latin word for hollow container. Any condition that

affects this system is considered vascular disease. The diseases range from problems

with the arteries, veins, and vessels that carry lymph to disorders that affect how blood

flows. A disease can lead to the tissues not getting enogh blood, a condition called

ischemia, as well as other serious, even life-threatening problems (WebMD, 2017).

The vascular system is the body’s network of blood vessels. It includes the

arteries, veins and capillaries that carry blood to and from the heart. Problems of the

vascular system are common and can be serious. Arteries can become thick and stiff,

a problem called atherosclerosis. Blood clots can clog vessels and block blood flow to

the heart or brain. Weakened blood vessels can burst, causing bleeding inside the

body. (MedlinePlus, 2016)

Everyone is at risk for vascular disease. With the increase in obesity and Type

II diabetes in Americans and as the population ages, vascular diseases are becoming

epidemic. Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) alone affects 8.5 million people. It can

occur in anyone at any time; affecting men and women equally. Atherosclerosis can

begin in adolescence. Vascular Disease commonly occurs at sites of turbulent blood

flow, such as when the blood flow in the arteries changes direction abruptly (Vascular

Cures, 2017).

Most Americans are familiar with heart disease and with the consequences of

11
St. Edward Integrated School

blockages in the vessels that carry blood to and from the heart. But few people realize

that blockages caused by a buildup of plaque and cholesterol affect more than

coronary arteries . Arteries throughout the body carry oxygen-rich blood away from

the heart, so blockages can occur in all arteries with serious effects (Society for

Vascular Surgery).

Vascular Diseases outside the heart can “present” themselves anywhere. The

most common vascular diseases are stroke, peripheral artery disease (PAD),

abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), carotid artery disease (CAD), arteriovenous

malformation (AVM), critical limb ischemia (CLI), pulmonary embolism (blood clots),

deep vein thrombosis (DVT), chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), and varicose veins

(Vascular Cures, 2017).

Some of the effects of Vascular Disease are heart attack, angina (chest pain),

stroke, sudden loss of blood flow to an area of the brain, narrowing of the aorta, blood

clot in a deep vein located within the muscles of the leg, swelling caused by

interruption of the normal drainage pattern in the lymph nodes, and high blood

pressure in the lungs blood circulation due to vascular conditions (Stanford Health

care, 2017). The American Academy of Family Physicians suggests how to prevent

vascular disease. One of this are avoid smoking, get regular exercise (at least 30

minutes, four to six times a week), stick to a low-sodium, low fat diet, and take

medications if you need them to help lower your cholesterol and lower your blood

pressure (MedicineNet, 2017).

12
St. Edward Integrated School

There are many ways to reduce the risk of having having vascular disease and

that is maintaining a good diet. Nutrition and diet play a huge role in preventing heart

disease. Maintaining a good diet can reduce the risk for heart disease. A diet high in

raw fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and omega-3 fatty acids, which are often

present in fish, helps prevent heart disease (Kinman, Heart Disease Prevention,

2016). Every single fruit and vegetable provides all of the nutrients needed to be

healthy (Chan, Vegetables and Fruits, 2017).

The higher the average daily intake of fruits and vegetables, the lower the

chances of developing vascular disease. Compared to people who never eat fruit,

those who eat fruit every day cut the vascular disease risk by 25% to 40%. People

who ate the most amount of fruit also had much lower blood pressure compared to

the participants who never ate fruit (Sifferlin, 2014).

Studies have shown that exercise can have cardiovascular benefits in people

with spinal cord injury, producing improvements in blood pressure, heart rate, and

overall fitness. Furthermore, exercise has been found to improve vascular blood flow

velocity and arterial vessel diameter (Ditor & Macdonald).

Walking and regular physical activity was also linked to better preservation of

cognitive function in women 65 years or older with vascular disease (Varcambre,

Grodstein, & Manson). Middle-aged men also benefit from exercise-based

rehabilitation. It has shown to not only lower the risk of dying from heart disease, but

may also improve a patient’s quality of life (Heran, Chen, & Ebrahim).

13
St. Edward Integrated School

According to (World Helth Organization, 2015), a healthy lifestyle is a way of

living that lowers the risk of being seriously ill or dying early. Health is not just about

avoiding disease, it is also about physical, mental and social well-being. When a

healthy lifestyle is adopted, a more positive role model is provided for other people in

the family, particularly children.

A good diet is important for good health. Eating a variety of foods can improve

general well-being, reduce the risk of conditions including heart disease, stroke, some

cancers, diabetes and osteoporosis and help manage weight. Eating sensibly,

choosing a varied diet from a range of foods, not smoking and keeping active are all

great ways to boost health (Jackson, 2016).

The effects of having this kind of disease are not limited to health, but can seep

into social, financial, and emotional aspects of life as well. Because heart disease is

a chronic illness and not something one can be cured of, the presence of heart disease

becomes a permanent part of a patient’s life (National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute,

2016).

According to (American Heart Association, 2017) being diagnosed with heart

disease may affect the social, financial, and emotional aspects in life and probably

feeling many emotions. A person diagnosed in a disease may feel alone, scared or

may be different from before and the emotions may be both negative and positive.

Feelings are very common, most heart disease patients have them. Problems or

difficulties may go away as the person diagnosed in a disease learn to understand the

14
St. Edward Integrated School

condition and manage it, but sometimes feelings such as depression may stay and

that will require to seek professional help. The emotions can affect the recovery of a

person, so it is important to understand the feelings, recognize the problems and get

help if needed.

15
St. Edward Integrated School

Synthesis and Relevance of Reviewed Literature and Studies

Based on the review of related literature and studies gathered by the

researchers, vascular disease is, without question, the current leading cause of

morbidity and premature deaths of modern era medicine. Likewise, it is one of the

primary causes of disability.

The researchers emphasized that certain risk factors such as family history and

age cannot be controlled. The most valuable thing that the patients should do to

reduce the risk of having heart disease is to become active participants in own care.

Vascular disease can cause serious complications. However, following the

doctors advice and adopting healthy lifestyle habits can prevent or reduce the risk of

dying suddenly from heart problems. Lifestyle changes and medicines can help control

heart disease. Lifestyle changes include following a healthy diet, being physically

active, maintaining a healthy weight, quitting smoking, and managing stress.People

should be worrying about heart problems or making lifestyle changes that are

necessary for health. Living with heart disease may cause fear, anxiety, depression,

and stress. Talking to a professional counselor can help if a person is very depressed

about the condition. Support from family and friends can also relieve stress and

anxiety.

The relevance of the review of related literature to this study is to strengthen

more the study by using the facts gathered by the researchers and the relevance of

review of related literature and studies is to give information about the factors or the

16
St. Edward Integrated School

main reasons why people are prone to this kind of disease and to know what are the

possible things to help reduce the risk of vascular disease.

CHAPTER 3

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research Design

The researchers have used Phenomenological Study. Phenomenological study

centers about the experiences of the respondents to a particular case or topic, and

since this study was based on the experiences of vascular disease survivors, the

researchers used Phenomenology. This study aimed to determine the problems of the

patients and recommendation. The researchers presented data based on the results

of the interview to achieve the objectives of the study. The use of Phenomenology

was incorporated by asking questions about the experiences of the respondents

regarding social, financial, and psychological aspects. Phenomenology was used by

the researchers to determine how the patients coped with the situation and became

vascular disease survivors.

Research Participants

This study have used the vascular disease survivors living in Imus, Dasmariñas

and Rosario, Cavite as the respondents for the researchers interviews. The

researchers had five respondents who lived in Imus, Dasmariñas and Rosario, Cavite.

The interview questions that have been asked were about the effects of vascular

disease to the respondents in terms of social, financial, and psychological aspects

and ways of the respondents to cope with the disease.

18
St. Edward Integrated School

Sampling Technique

The sampling technique that was used for this study is Purposive Sampling

Technique. It is a non-probability sample that is selected based on characteristics of

a population and the objectives of the study. Purposive sampling is also known as

judgmental, selective, or subjective sampling.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers have formulated questionnaires that serve as guide questions

that have been answered by the vascular disease survivors. The interview focused on

social, financial, and psychological problems that the respondents faced during the

time of the treatment. The interview was composed of six questions regarding the

experiences of the respondents that have been answered by the vascular disease

survivors. The response of the participants was recorded in the study to keep this

research unbias.

Data Analysis

The research instrument the reseachers have used in data gathering was

interview. However, today people live in a fast paced world and nearly nobody has the

time to participate in an interview, the researchers see that technology such as various

online communication platforms makes life easier and faster. The researchers decided

that this would be helpful so that the respondents would find it easier to participate in

19
St. Edward Integrated School

an interview. The researchers constructed this instrument by incorporating technology

with two existing research instruments, which are transcribing and interviewing. The

data were presented through narrative and descriptive method based on the

respondent’s answer on each given question in the interview.

aspect, the respondents did not experience any difficulties in terms of socializing with

other people because they did not take their illness seriously. The respondents still

tried to live just like before. In terms of financial aspect, the respondents answered

that they did not suffer that much in terms of financial because they have their

insurance and PhilHealth. In psychological aspect, the respondents do find it hard

having this kind of illness, especially when the respondents are still undergoing the

treatments.

Table 2 showed the respondents answers on how do they overcome the

struggles of having vascular disease and they said that all the patients need is the

support of friends, special loved ones, and especially family because they are the only

persons that can understand and help them. And they said that do not take the illness

seriously, try to still live the life that they used to have before.

CHAPTER 5
SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Summary of Findings

The researchers used phenomenology as the research design for this

study. Phenomenology is used to explain how, when, where, and why the said

phenomenon happens through the observation of experiences. The study is about the

experiences of heart disease survivors during the time that they were still patients.

Through the use of the phenomenology as research design, the researchers

conducted interviews gathering the necessary information in order to achieve the

objectives of the study. The respondents were vascular disease survivors who where

currently living in Imus, Dasmariñas and Rosario, Cavite where the survey took place.

After gathering the datas, the researchers councluded that in terms of social aspect,

they said do not hesistate to ask help from their family and friends because they are

the only one who can understand their situation and whom they can rely on. In terms

of financial aspect, the respondents said that they have to say to their family and

friends what is on their mind and say what are the things that they can help during

times like this, especially financially. While in psychological aspect, they said that

always think positively, follow the doctors advice and strengthen their emotions.

25
St. Edward Integrated School

Conclusions

After the researchers gathered the data, the reseachers therefore concluded

that:

1. Most of the survivors said that in terms of social aspect, they had a hard

time in terms of this because they can no longer do the the things that

they used to to do. In financial aspect, majority of the respondents did

not encounter any difficulties because they had their insurance and their

family still supported them financially. While in psychological aspect, the

respondents said that they should think positively and have faith to God

that they will survive with this disease.

2. Most of the heart disease survivors answered that without their family,

friends, or special loved ones, they would not be able to overcome their

heart disease.

3. Most of the survivors gave pieces of advice. In terms of social aspect,

the person suffering from this kind of disease should tell and do not

hesistate to ask help from their family and friends. In financial aspect,

the respondents advised not to be hesitant when asking for help from

relatives and loved ones. And lastly, in terms of psychological aspect,

most of the respondents said that they should always have a positive

thinking and believe that they can surpass the struggles that they are

currently experiencing.

Recommendations

The researchers recommendations are first avoid over thinking. The

patients should not take their illness seriously because this may cause stress and this

may affect the behavior of an individual and may trigger the risk factors of heart

disease such as high blood pressure. The persons who have this kind of disease

should relax sometimes; forget that they have still a lot of things to do; refresh their

mind and free themselves from everything that pressures or stresses them. They must

do some physical activities like exercise because this can help their heart work

efficiently, but of course if they do have a vascular disease, they should not do the

things that might really exhaust them. They have to avoid those bad habits that they

used to do before such as smoking and drinking alcoholic drinks and other vices. They

have to avoid eating unhealthy foods which are high in fats and they must start eating

healthy foods like fish that is high in omega-3, vegetables and fruits, because eating

a heart-healthy diet is a good way to start. Furthermore, this study can benefit the

people suffering from vascular disease, the people specializing in the field of medicine

and also for the future researchers to use this study as their reference.
