Please note
We also use ‘have to’ in a similar way to a
modal verb to express obligation. It is not a
modal verb and behaves like normal verbs.

Contractions are often used.

Please note
When making a negative statement, “not“
comes after the verb.

Normal Verbs: I drive -----> I don’t drive

Modal Verbs: I should -----> I shouldn’t

You must -----> You mustn’t

Modal verbs remain the same for all persons.
Do not add ’s’ for the 3rd person singular.
When using the third person singular (he/she/it) do
not add an ‘s’.

Modal Verbs: I should -----> She should

Remember that “have to“ is not a modal verb.
The third person singular form changes.
Example:
You have to go there! ----> He has to go there!
Use ‘don’t’ to make a negative statement.

You don’t have to speak the language.


Use ‘do’ when making questions.
