The Hot Seat!
The Hot Seat is an interactive discussion led by you and your group that teaches
the class about your assigned act/chapter(s)/poems from our current reading.
There are five sections to The Hot Seat and each section must be included in your
discussion with the class. A typed copy of the Hot Seat presentation must be
turned in to me (on Canvas) before you begin.

*This will vary depending on what we are reading)

Exile Poetry
Read and discuss all three poems with your group. For the assignment, focus on
your assigned poem. Begin “The Hot Seat” assignment, see handout. Be ready to
present during the last 15 minutes of class.

**Also include examples of Anglo-Saxon poetic devices: meter, alliteration, assonance, kennings, use of
caesura---that add to lyrical quality and assist in memorization. Analyze tone, theme, and relate to
historical context. Identify the form of and reason for the speaker’s exile; examine poems at mimetic of
culture and lifestyle**

Beowulf- Grendel (pages 42-45)
1. Pre-reading Vocabulary- Define the following words prior to us reading: harp,
moors, spawned, Cain, lair, fiend, exile, brood, lament, kenning, reparation,
heathen, affliction (15 minutes)

2. With your group, read and annotate (in your classwork section, will be
checked), all of Grendel

2. Come up with two discussion questions about today’s reading. Post in
Canvas. Respond to THREE classmates!

2. Answer the study questions as a review, place in class work (you may add it to your

3. When you finish: Heroic Teens- Read the article "9 Heroic Teens and their Incredible Acts
of Bravery" in Canvas.
● As a discussion, write a paragraph explaining the differences between a modern hero
and an epic hero. Include details from the article. Reply to two classmates.

After Reading Discussion:

1. What happens to Grendel?


2. What striking images does the poet use to bring the character to life?
3. How important is Beowulf to the fate of Denmark?
Hypothesis Assignment
Reread Grendel’s attack on pages 50-51.

- Remember, Beowulf does not spring into action until after Grendel kills one of
the sleeping Geats (lines 262-268).
- Reflect on the possible reasons for Beowulf’s delay (why he doesn’t act
immediately).
- Summarize your conclusions in a well written paragraph (8-10 sentences). Be
prepared to share with the class.

Lesson: Modern Day Heroes Writing Stations


- Let’s watch an interview with Malala. I would like for you to think about what qualities make her a
hero.
- Your job is to write an essay comparing and contrasting (no paragraph limit) how she relates with
the epic hero (look at your epic hero characteristics handout) and your own views of heroes.
- You must go through the Writing Process before submission within your own group:

- Self Edits
- Peer Edits
- Final Draft
