2.50", 10M Side Door Stripper Packer

The Side Door Stripper Packer is designed to permit replacement of the packer, energizer, and bushings
from the open space below the injector. Changing packers is always easy, but it is particularly
advantageous when changing packers with tubing in the well.

1.0 FEATURES

Easy retrofit with DS34 - The side door stripper packer is designed for easy retrofit with the familiar
DS34. To install the side door stripper packer remove the old stripper packer. Remove the spacer. The
Hydra Rig spacer is 6.25" long. The spacer has a combination bolt pattern, 9.25" bolt circle on top and
8.50" on the bottom. The side door stripper packer has a 9.25" bolt circle to mount directly into the
injector.

Only one modification required to install the side door stripper packer - The hole in the base of
the Hydra-Rig injector is 6.125". This hole must be enlarged to accept the 6.875" diameter of the side
door stripper packer. If it is desirable to re-convert to the DS34 stripper packer, no modification is
required, simply re-install the spacer, and DS34 stripper packer.

New packer size - The packer is a new size, with a 3.50" O.D. This packer does not require an
energizer, however, if it is desirable to use the standard 2.50" O.D. packer, an interlocking split
energizer 3.50" O.D. X 2.50" I.D. is also available. The wear bushings above the packers are extra
long, for better centering of the coiled tubing, and longer wear life.

Easy pack-off - The Texas Oil Tools side door stripper packer is designed to pack-off on coiled tubing
as it is being stripped in or out of the well, at working pressures up to 10,000 psi.

Only one seal is exposed to well pressure - That seal is the field proven design used in the heavy
duty hydraulic release connectors. For insurance, a second "reserve" seal is in place, and can be
placed in service even with the coiled tubing in the well. If the primary seal becomes damaged, cut and
remove it, and then slide the fresh reserve seal up and into place. Both the primary, and reserve seal
can be replaced without disassembly, when the coiled tubing is out of the stripper packer.

All metals in contact with pressured well fluids conform to NACE MR-01-75 for H2S Service. The
stripper packer is available for three different service applications.

2.0 SERVICE

H2S Service
All well fluid wet metals to NACE MR-01-75, with Viton O-Rings, T-seals and Polymyte seals. seals in
the hydraulic cylinder are Nitrile. Operating temperature range -20º F to 200º F.
Note: operating at higher temperatures will require changing Packers, Energizer and Seals.

DNV -32ºC Service

All well fluid wet metal parts to NACE MR-01-75 for H2S Service, Viton o-rings, T-seals, and Polymyte
seals. Seals in the hydraulic chamber are Nitrile. Charpy impact tests on all parts as required by DNV.
DNV design verification, Data Book, and Certificate of Conformity for operating to -25º F, (-32º C).
Note: operating at higher temperatures will require changing packers, energizer and seals.

H2S -50ºF SERVICE

All well fluid wet metal parts to NACE MR-01-75 for H2S service with low temperature o-rings and
Polymyte seals. Charpy impact tests on metals per API 6A. Operating temperature range -50º F to
200º F. Note: operating at higher temperatures will require changing packers, energizer and seals.

3.0 OPERATION

The hydraulic pack-off cylinder is above the packing system. Therefore, well pressure has no access
to the hydraulic chamber. The hydraulic cylinder is a larger diameter, since placing the hydraulic
system above the packer requires that the pack-off force exceed the force of the well pressure. The
ratio of the hydraulic pressure to well pressure is dependent upon the size of the coiled tubing.

Coiled Tubing Size Ratio

1.00" ............................................................................................................................................ 2.5/1
1.25" ............................................................................................................................................ 2.7/1
1.50" ........................................................................................................................................... 2.8/1
1.75" .......................................................................................................................................... 3.1/1

Example: 1.00" Coiled Tubing , 10,000 psi Well Pressure

10,000/2.5 = 4,000 psi Hydraulic pressure

1.75" Coiled Tubing, 10,000 psi Well Pressure

10,000/3.1 = 3,226 psi Hydraulic Pressure

The above calculated hydraulic pressure is the pressure required to overcome the force of the well
pressure. A slight additional hydraulic pressure will be required to compress the packer.

To change packers - Apply hydraulic pressure to the "retract" hydraulic port. This will move the
packer cylinder sleeve up completely exposing the packer. To prevent accidental opening of the
packer cylinder sleeve, a stop guard prevents upward movement of the packer cylinder sleeve.
Disarming the stop guard requires that the lock screws be retracted, and the stop guard swung
outward, clearing the packer cylinder sleeve.

Premature packer wear - The single most frequent cause of premature packer wear or failure is worn
bushings. At very low well pressure, and hydraulic pressure, you may be able to use worn bushings.
At higher pressures, it is essential that the non-extrusion ring and upper bushing fit closely to the
tubing to prevent packer extrusion. Bushings must be replaced frequently to minimize the extrusion
gap.

4.0 DISASSEMBLY/ASSEMBLY - Reference Drawing DS74-T002, DS74-T003, DS74-T005

Disassembly - While mounted in the injector, and hydraulic pressure is available, retract the lock
screw (19), swing the stop guard to the open position. Apply hydraulic pressure to the retract port to
move the packer cylinder sleeve (14) to the maximum upward position. Remove the packer (5), non-
extrusion ring (4), and lower bushing (7). If the bushings do not readily slide down, apply hydraulic
pressure to the "pack-off" port, moving the packer cylinder sleeve (14) to maximum downward travel.
Change to the "retract' port moving the packer cylinder sleeve to the maximum upward travel exposing
the guide bushing, for removal. The spacer, and upper bushings should now be free to move
downward for removal.
To replace all seals: remove the stripper packer from the injector. Remove the bushing sleeve (8), and
o-ring (10). Remove the hydraulic cylinder (9), and o-ring (15). Remove retainer ring (24), washer (23),
and step ring (22). TAKE CARE in removing the packer cylinder sleeve (14) as all I.D. and O.D.
surfaces are sealing surfaces. Remove the pusher ring (17), T-seal (11), o-ring (12), back-up (13), and
o-ring (16). Remove M-seals (21).

Assembly - Install M-seals (21). Note the thin edge of the seal must be installed toward the top of the
tool. Install o-ring (15), and o-ring (16). Install o-ring (10), bushing sleeve (8) into the hydraulic cylinder
(9). Install o-ring (12), back-up (13), and T-seal (11). Install the packer cylinder sleeve (14) into the
hydraulic cylinder sub-assembly. Install guide bushing (1), spacer bushings (2), upper bushing (3), and
pusher ring (17), then assemble this sub-assembly into the body (25). Install step ring (22), washer
(23), and external retainer ring (24). Install non-extrusion ring (4), and packer (5).

The interlocking packer (5), is used without an energizer. The advantage of this packer is the
increased amount of material available for extended wear. If conditions warrant use of the "standard"
2.50" O.D. X 4" long packer, this is possible by using the 8006-3525 energizer (6). This energizer does
not have a spring molded in place, and is a two piece interlocking unit, in order to permit changing the
packer through the side door.

To operate in all of the various applications the hydraulic system should have a 5,000psi working
pressure. Most applications will require much less pressure.

The stripper packer works most conveniently with a pump having a 4-way valve and two hoses. If a
single hose system is used, be sure that any quick connectors do not have check valves as this would
prevent escape of the down stream hydraulic fluid and prevent normal operation of the tool.

7.0 BUSHING EXTENSION

The stripper packer can be extended to bring the bushings closer to the chain. This can be
accomplished by installing the bushing cap extension (51) on the bushing sleeve (8). The bushing
extension is retained with four 3/8" set screws (52). To extend the top bushing you must add
another spacer bushing (2). The spacer bushings are added in the window. See Section 3.0 for
changing the bushings.

8.0 CONVERSION FOR 2.00" COILED TUBING

Reference Drawing DS74-T003

This stripper can be converted to run 2.00" coiled tubing. Special caution must be used when
running the 2.00 coiled tubing in this stripper packer. The bushing is real thin and it will wear out
quickly. If the bushing wears out while on a job, the coiled tubing may be damaged.

Assembly - Remove all of the bushings and packers. Install the guide bushing (33) form the top
and retain it with the bushing cap (31) and set screws (32). There are four set screws that retain
the bushing cap.

The lower bushing is just like the standard lower bushing. The upper bushing is bolted to the
pusher ring (17) and placed in the bushing sleeve above the packer. The upper bushing does not
have an interlocking groove for other bushings.

9.0 SPECIAL OPERATION

The possibility exists that an operator may apply excessive hydraulic operating
pressure to the pack-off, that could result in the collapse of the coiled tubing, even with
zero wellhead pressure.

A reported incidence of coiled tubing collapse during pressure tests has warranted notification
of possible circumstances where high wellhead and hydraulic pressures may cause the tubing
to collapse in the stripper packer.

The circumstances related to this incident involves a 2.50" 10M Model DS74 Side Door
Stripper and DT74 Tandem Side Door Stripper, both dressed for 1.75" QT 800, .109" wall
coiled tubing. With a lubricator test pressure of 5,000 psi, approximately 2500 psi hydraulic
pressure was applied to the upper pack-off. After completion of a successful test period, the
5,000 psi test pressure was dumped, creating a pressure imbalance and ensuing tubing
collapse at the upper packer contact area. It was concluded that the high hydraulic pack-off
pressure created an excessive external force that resulted in the collapse of the tubing.

Solution:

An extensive testing program was conducted at the Conroe plant replicating the same
operational criteria as the aforementioned incident. These tests were conducted on a variety of
tubing sizes and wall thicknesses using several qualifying parameters including, tubing ovality,
external pressure and hydraulic pack-off pressure. The results of these tests have yielded
enough preliminary data to assimilate a conservative formula for determining an acceptable
limit to the maximum hydraulic pressure that should be applied to the pack-off. This data is
based on the published collapse pressures of QT-700 tubing, and would only apply to coiled
tubing that still meets the tubing manufacturer's minimum quality requirements, with a
maximum ovality of 5%. The following typical graph is based on these conditions, and the
following formula.

External Well PSI/Area Ratio of Packoff from Tech Manual = Min. Hyd. PSI to Packoff

(Internal C.T. PSI + Rated Collapse PSI) 0.9 Safety Factor = Max. Hyd. PSI to Packoff
Area Ratio of Pack-off from Tech Manual

The accompanying typical graph is for illustration and to be used as reference only. The
operator should determine the maximum force to apply to the stripper based on the individual
conditions related to each job. In each case, applying only the minimum hydraulic pressure to
pack-off, and reducing the hydraulic pressure as well/test pressure is relieved, will reduce the
possibility of collapsing the coiled tubing. It should be noted that tubing tension is also an
important variable that should be taken into account when determining maximum hydraulic
pressure.
