Lesson Outline

Objective: To teach and transfer the knowledge of Gestures in America, in regards to how other
cultures and countries view them. To show in a Powerpoint Presentation the different gestures.

Materials: PowerPoint slide show. A Youtube video showing the different gestures and their
meanings. Computer and Projector to show the PowerPoint Presentation. Exit slips with gestures.
Instruction:

Gestures Lesson Plan

What are Gestures? I researched hand gestures, although there are many other ways to gesture.

Slide #1: Introduce myself and the topic to which we will be learning about today.
Slide #2- Read the definition of gesture.
Slide #3- The Thumbs Up gesture. It’s meaning in America, the Middle East and Bangladesh. If
the thumbs up is insulting in other countries, I pose the question, and what does it look like on
Facebook in those countries? I think it looks the same. I couldn’t find the answer.
Slide #4- The Thumbs Down gesture. It’s meaning in America and other countries.
Slide #5- The “Come Here” gesture. It’s meaning in America, Singapore and the Philippines.
Slide #6- The V gesture. It’s meaning in America, the UK, South Africa and Australia.

Slide #7- The Horn Gesture. It’s meaning in American, Latin and Mediterranean Cultures.

Slide #8- The Ok Gesture. It’s meaning in America, France, Australia and Latin America.

Slide #9- The Middle Finger Gesture. It’s meaning in all countries. And what you should never
do.

Slide #10- Watch a video of gestures and where not use them.

Slide #11- My thoughts. I will give a brief explanation of my thoughts.

Slide #12- My Resources used for my research.

Closure: Ask the class to put up the gestures that go with the explanation. Discuss the
presentation. Discuss the Exit Gestures that could be used in the classroom. Answer any
questions and ask for feedback.
Assessment of Lesson Taught

Ok Class I am going to tell you what the meaning of the gesture is and I want you to make the gesture
when you know the answer.

Question 1- This gesture can mean your spouse is cheating on you in Latin cultures Or “Rock on” in
America. Answer- The Horn

Question 2- This gesture means, “Go screw yourself” in Australia and the UK or Peace in America.
Answer- The V

Question 3- This gesture can get you arrested in the Philippines Or “Come Here” in America.
Answer-Curling the pointing finger

Question 4- This gesture is highly offensive in the Middle East or “Right on” Good Job in America.
Answer- Thumbs Up

Question 5- This gesture is the Universal sign for F*** Off and should never be used in the classroom.
Answer- Middle Finger
