It measures the students’ capacity to

come up with a compilation of poems. And,
the teacher asks the students to make
their own love poem inspired from the
poems they compiled and gives 2 weeks for

This form of assessment makes the

students an active constructor of their

(Please include your personal observations and comments below the
description)

Conventional type
Paper and A traditional type of test that is used to measure
Pencil Test – students understanding and critical thinking skills
and based on the question and choices given. Through
this assessment, students learn to express their ideas
(Essay and multiple based on what is taught in the lesson select the
choice) appropriate answer on the choices given.

It was given directly after the day’s lesson which is

best for the students to test themselves since the
lesson is still fresh in their minds.

The disadvantage is it was also very easy for them to

cheat since it only requires students to select on the
choices given. Sometimes, this type of test takes time
to prepare yet easy to check.

Oral recitation It was used to measure the learning of the students

while teaching and learning takes place. It measure
how well a student can respond to a given question and
It develops the students’ communication skills as
well.

However this type of assessment is prone to coaching

which sometimes result to failure to validate the true
state of students learning.

Authentic Types

Solving solve problems related to the real-life situation.
This is an appropriate tool for the students to
develop and improve their logical and mathematical
skills.

It was best for the students to practice their skills

since direct corrective feedback is given after each
problem being solved on the board.

However for those students who are not mathematically

inclined fear is evident since everybody in the class
will witness their waterloo.
A type of assessment which requires students to
Performance perform a certain task and manifest the criterion set.
Tasks The division of labor in this kind of assessment
method is clearly imbalance since there students who
will not participate which will somehow contribute to
the failure of the assessment process.

These are students compilation on relevant outputs

Portfolio related to the subject matter. The teacher has set
deadlines for each output to make sure students will
do their tasks diligently and to get genuine outputs.
Your Analysis

1. Was there a variety of assessment methods used by the teacher? How relevant
was/were the assessment method/s used?

Yes, the assessment methods used by the teacher were varied

depending its objective, students’ interests and the area on what it
intends to measure. They were all highly relevant since it was not
only tool to measure the students’ learning as it takes place after
every lesson but as a way to check how well the teacher plan and
perform his duty as the director and facilitator of learning.
Rather than stick to the ordinary and traditional way of
assessing learning outcome, the teacher, usedvarious assessment tools
to which the students’ multiple intelligences were catered and given
attention to be developed more and be discovered rather than making
those outcast and mentally challenged to stay behind shadow of those
highly intellectual students. The varied assessment strategies make
every student an active creator of their own knowledge regardless of
their learning capacity.

2. Do you think the expected students’ learning behaviors indicated in the

objectives were properly and appropriately assessed through those assessment
methods?

Absolutely yes, the teacher used appropriate assessment method

which measured on what it intends to measure, and the students were
able to show understanding on the subject matter.
Yes, the target objectives were achieved and it was all properly
and appropriately assessed since it was all anchored to the lessons’
objective which the students manifest and possessed after the
discussion and evaluation. And, because the teacher made the objective
owned by the students, the students enjoyed the lesson and shows
interest which later contribute to the success of their own learning.
As the students knew from the start of the lesson what they are
expected to learn and thusexplicitly manifest the behavioral objectives on
the latter part and while teaching and learning process takes place.
YOUR REFLECTIONS
Write your personal reflection of thoughts and feelings about the importance in
the use of appropriate assessment methods in the classroom, including what
students and teachers can gain from appropriate assessment tools.

Based on my observations, I realized a number of things. First,

assessing students learning and learning outcomes nowadays are not
merely limited to the traditional way of paper and pencil test. This
tool was and has always been part in assessing students learning,
sometimes, and most often than not it is used even if it wouldn’t fit
though to what it really intends to measure. As a result learning and
teaching objective were not able to meet since it wouldn’t assess the
real expected outcome. And because of this, I realized that the
learning objectives, teaching strategies and the assessment tools
should always and forever be aligned to each other. Every component
has to work hand in hand enable for us to achieve our desired goal to
which the students should depict and manifest learning not just in the
four corners of the room but even to the real world situation.
Second, I realized that in planning the teaching and learning
process itself it should not be taken for granted that this is all for
students’ learning. Every bit of this, teachers should consider the
students’ interest and multiple intelligences. Teachers should not
forget that a classroom is vast vessel of diverse individuals whose
personality and identity varies from one another and true learning
won’t be assessed properly if teachers would only used single variety
of assessment method,
Third and most importantly, the assessment method should not be
based on what is easy and convenient on teachers’ part. It should and
always be anchored on the days lesson objectives to properly and
appropriate assess learning outcome and students learning also.
Sometimes teachers tend to forget the important of appropriateness of
the assessment method and venture to simple and traditional way of
assessment even if it doesn’t really commensurate to what is suppose
to measure. As a result, teachers give incorrect assessment and
evaluation on the expected outcome and students learning.
Indeed teaching doesn’t only end in assessing students learning
its way more than that. Teaching is touching lives and scrutinizing
every thread to make a wonderful master forever.

EPISODE 2-My ATM Card (Available Tests
&Measures)
1. Visit a class on a subject area of your choice.
2. Study the teacher’s objectives of the lesson. Observe his/her class, focusing on the
evaluation part of the lesson.
3. Make a Table of Specification and construct pen-and-paper test items on the
subject observed.
4. Conduct the pen and paper test in a class.
5. Analyze and interpret the data obtained from it focusing on target competency.

Teacher’s Learning Objectives:

At the end of the lesson the students will be able to:
a. define scanning and skimming;
b. differentiate and identify how scanning and skimming is used; and
c. use scanning and skimming as a reading teaching in the reading selection
given.

Desired conditions and criterion levels of the learning objectives:

With used of the scanning and skimming as reading techniques, students

should answer 90% the questions correctly and get the information required
just 15 minutes.

Other notes:
Based on my observations, it is important to let the students know the
learning objectives of the day and set its desired conditions and criterion
so that learners may know where they are at and for them to keep track with
their goal. This will also keep the students strive more since they know
what are the things that they should achieve.
DESIGNING PEN-AND-PAPER TEST

To help you prepare your pen-and-paper test which will soon administer in
the class you have observed, please remember to:

1. Make a two-way Table of Specification. Make sure that you focus on the current subject
matter of the class you observed, and that you target the higher levels of learning
behaviors. Please adopt the TOS format prescribed by the school where you do your class
observation. If the school has TOS templates, ask permission to use it.

2. Show your TOS to your FS teacher, then to the classroom teacher. Get their comments and
suggestions and improve your TOS.

3. With approved TOS, formulate your test items. Write each test item in an index card,
indicating the subject matter and the desired level of learning behavior to be assessed,
among others.

4. Make an Item Bank by organizing the index cards containing your test items. Show it to
your classmates for their comments and suggestions, then to your FS teacher for checking,
and finally, to the classroom teacher.

5. Prepare a test paper of the finalized items.

6. Get the classroom teacher’s permission to administer the test.

7. Administer the test to the class for which the test is designed. Then check the test papers
and record students’ scores.

8. Do an item analysis and make inferences out of the result.

9. Indicate the item analysis results of each item on the index card where you wrote the item.
Your Analysis

1. Do you think the teacher’s learning objective was appropriately assessed by your
test items? Why?/Why not?

The assessment method is appropriate when it matches the

instructional objective.Certainly YES, because I see to it that I
anchored my test questions in the learning objectives. And basically it
measures the ability of the students to scan and skim reading
materials in just a specific period of time. And apart from that they
were able to define and differentiate the two reading techniques to
which I know is a perfect indication that they understand and were
able to learner to something out from the topic.

2. Why did you have to study the teacher’s learning objectives prior to developing
an assessment tool?

In assessing the students learning, it is not enough that you

test how far the students understood it has to be based on the
behavioral objectives which you have set. Aside from thatstudents
should manifest clear understanding of the topic by hitting the goal
you’ve set. And this understanding and learning of the topic will only
be assessed properly if the teacher will also used appropriate
assessment method which will measure what really intends to measure.
Like a teacher cannot give a valid assessed in her PE class if
her lesson objective is to make a love poem. Yet,the assessment tool
that he used for the said objective is just merely reading a love
poem, technically and literally reading and writing a poem itself is
far different in one another by then, the assessment method doesn’t
serve its purpose well so you really have to carefully plan you
assessment method so as plan and carefully study the objectives since
this will serve as the anchor of the teaching learning process
destination.

YOUR REFLECTIONS
Write your personal reflection of thoughts and feelings regarding
the Peace Concept on Focus.

Based in my observation, I realized that there are a lot of

things which needs to be considered in making an appropriate
assessment tool. Though this process are done in every step on
the way through making a successful and meaningful learning but
teachers must always look into consideration in this part of the
teaching and learning process. As I observed based in my teaching
experience and my filed study as well, this process is sometimes
over seen and taken for granted by few teachers. And because of
this, I learned how crucial it is in selecting assessment tool
and that how important it is to carefully planned and study this
prior the implementing this to assess students learning.
In my experience being a teacher for two years, I also
learned that an assessment tool is appropriate when it matches to
the instructional objectives, when it measures what I really
intend to measure and that appropriateness is not just something
that teachers wish to consider for himself, but rather an
essential principle of fair assessment practices which we are all
after of that if taken for granted, our evaluation of students’
learning in invalid and unreliable.
It is but important that teachers should understand that
evaluation is influenced by factors that contribute error in
assessment. So I believe, that teacher should explain to the
class what he wanted the class to achieve after instruction and
be able to validate this with an appropriate assessment method
which would bring in best and reliable result without prejudice
and always envision in making all students learn.

EPISODE 3– Log me

1. Readarticles on new trends of classroom assessment.

2. Visit a class and interview the teacher on his/her experiences in using authentic
assessment.
3. Write a reflective journal on the activity.

My Review Notes
Please use this sheet to outline the essential information about authentic
assessment that you draw from the articles you read.

1.Demonstration assessment
2.Project based assessment/ product based assessment
3.Portfolio assessment
4.Performance based assessment
5.Problem solving assessment
REFLECTIVE JOURNAL
What were your personal strategies in choosing relevant articles to
read?

I personally take into consideration the latest and new trends

which the teachers are using nowadays. I see to it that these
strategies will bring out the best of the students understanding
as they get involved in the teaching and learning process.
Another strategy I used was I remembered the time I spent in
teaching, I knew students will be more interactive and
interested in the lesson if it has something personal to which
they can express themselves freely without hesitation and
thinking that their answers maybe incorrect.

What are your insights and feelings about the new trends in
classroom assessment?

For me personally, I feel happy about it since this would

certainly make the learning of the students more authentic and
reliable thus, making them more ready to face the real world
challenges as they land they own job.
Sometime in my observation, I feel jealous to this young
learners since today there are more than enough assessment
methods in which their teacher can use in assessing their
understanding unlike my test were bound to paper and pencil test
which robotic and mechanical whose assessment were solely based
on route memorization. Today, students were not used taught they
the concept but they were also taught by importance and will it
be applied to their real life.

What is your most meaningful learning from this activity?

With this activity, I was reminded that there are a lot of

assessment method apart from the ordinary and traditional way
which can be used to validate students learning outcome. This
activity serves as an eye opener for me that with the used to
these new and improved assessment methods students will be
interested to participate and show the class their hidden
talents and abilities apart from what is known. But even though
there are new trends sprouting it cannot be denied the
importance of paper and pencil test which has been proven and
test through time which would be best if combined with the news
methods of assessment. And best of all, this activity proves
that apart from cognitive domain which should be nurtured there
are still other aspects like psychomotor and affective domain
which needs to hone to achieve holistic development.
Before interviewing a teacher on his/her experiences in using authentic assessment, please
go over your Review Notes. Based on these, please draft possible questions you will ask the
teacher and confer with your FS teacher. When questions are finalized, write them down on
the sheet below. Spare some space between questions where you will write down the
teacher’s response to each question.

My Interview Notes
What authentic assessment tool do you always use? Why?

Problem solving assessment , portfolio assessment and performance

based assessment are the common tools which I used to validate
students learning because with portfolio assessment I will measure how
well they understand the discussion as they put they learning into
something that would be explain their understanding. Performance based
assessment so I can validate if those projects which they have passed
were created by them also. And paper and pencil test to measure their
understanding on the concepts being taught.

What do you think is the drawback of the authentic assessment? How do

you manage to cope with it?

These kinds of assessment methods takes time to implement thus,

the assessment also of the learning outcome will take some time.
Well, everything has its own pros and cons with regards to time
constraints involved I just give more time for the students to do
their portfolio and practice for their performance task for me to
give the best learning outcome that they could have.

REFLECTIVE JOURNAL
How did you feel about the teacher’s experience in the use of authentic
assessment?
I feel satisfied because he was able to cater the needs of the
students and he has able to use differentiated assessment methods
which help the teacher validate further the learning of the students
not just in the cognitive aspect but as well as in their psychomotor
an affective domain which help them develop holistically.

What do you think have been the gains enjoyed by the teacher and his/her
students from using authentic assessment?

For the students part, they were able to work with their
classmates in performance task which lead them to grow and build
interpersonal relationship among their classmates they make fun
and enjoy while learning with their peers and they were able to
express themselves freely were the no rule and choices to be
followed. On the teachers part on the other hand, it lessens
their job in check tons of test papers and they were able to
validate effectively the learning outcome of the students which
in return validate their teaching effectiveness as well.

Which part of the teacher’s use of authentic assessment do you feel like
improving or revising?

Based on my observation there is only one area which needs to be

develop that is he used of performance assessment method because
other students seemed to be dependent on other people especially
to their leaders. Other seemed to be mere spectator of the
learning process there were only limited students to participate
in the activity due to some reason the number of members in the
team and the distribution of students who has the capacity to
understand quickly and group of the mentally challenged learners.
