• Create annotated bibliography entry and submit
• Reminders for next week
Annotated Bibliography Requirements
• 8 scholarly, peer-reviewed sources
– 1 source may be non-scholarly if approved beforehand

• Each entry should include

– MLA or APA citation
– Summary of the main claim of the source
– Evaluation of the effectiveness and credibility of the source
– How you think the source will be useful to your project

• Rough draft due March 2 for peer review

• Turn to page 284 in your textbook to review the examples of
annotated bibliography entries.
Creating Your Citation
• Use Purdue OWL’s guide for either MLA or APA
• Identify the type of source you have – book chapter, article from
a database, article published in an online journal, etc.
• Using a hanging indent, create a citation paying careful
attention to punctuation as well as formatting (italics, quotation
marks, etc.).
• Take 5 minutes to complete your citation.
Write a concise summary
• Use the guidelines on page 307 to create your summary
– Source identification: In [type of source], [author’s full name] describes
[identify the subject matter].
– Central claim: [Author’s last name] presents/argues/believes, etc., that…
– Supporting claims or evidence: He/she offers the following
reasons/examples/studies, etc., as evidence that… (summarize supporting
claims, key evidence, or types of evidence. If the author emphasized one
point as most important, convey this as well.)

• Take 5-10 minutes to write a 2-3 sentence summary following

these guidelines.
Write an effective evaluation
• Page 280 offers guidelines for evaluating sources.
• Use the following questions to evaluate your source:
– What is the publication source? Be sure that the source has gone through a review
process.
– Is the source a primary or secondary source? Does it offer raw information or an
evaluation of raw information?
– Does the author have relevant credentials?
– What is the original context? What is the purpose of the writing? The intended
audience?
– What is the publication date? Is current information important for your topic?
– Are the author’s sources of information identified? Does the author provide a
bibliography that relies on scholarly sources?

• Take 5-10 minutes to write a statement that discusses the credibility and
effectiveness of your source.
Address usefulness of source
• This should offer me a brief explanation of how you think this
source will be useful in your project.
• What can you show or explain by including this source?
• Take 3-5 minutes to write a 1-sentence explanation of why this
source is useful to your project.
Revising and Proofreading
• It is important that you revise and proofread your work before
submitting it for a grade.
• Take a few minutes to read your entry aloud and look for any
areas that need to be revised.
• Once you have revised the entry, read it aloud one more time to
check for errors.
Submit
• Once you are satisfied with your entry, be sure that you have
named your file correctly:
– Last name_first name_annotated bibliography entry

• Submit your file as a .doc or .docx to the course website

– Homework
