(-) Installing both case carriers

Apply thread-locking compound to all the screws.

Thread-locking compound
Loctite 243, Medium strength 83 19 2 210 339

Hold both case carriers (1) in position at the appropriate points on the
rear frame.
Install screws (2) and tighten until hand-tight.
Tighten screws (3) until hand-tight, taking care not to trap lugs (4) of the
rear wheel cover; if necessary press the lugs in when installing the
screws.
Installing cross-member

Apply thread-locking compound to the screws.

Loctite 243, Medium strength 83 19 2 210 339

Hold cross-member (1) in position.

Install screws (2) and tighten until hand-tight.

Tightening screws

Bring all the components into alignment.

NOTICE
When using a thread-locking compound, always allow the correct setting
time (see information provided by manufacturer).

Tighten screws (1) and (2), taking care not to trap lugs (3) of the rear
wheel cover.

Tightening torques

M8 x 20 19 Nm
Thread-locking compound (Loctite

Tighten screws (4).

243, Medium strength)

(-) Remove the cover on each side

Use a narrow-bladed screwdriver to press in the side retainers (arrow)

and apply pressure from the inside to ease cover (1) out of rear trim
panel (2).

Remove the screw with washer on each side

Remove screw (1) and washer (2) on each side.

(-) Installing mushroom head on each side

Tighten locknut (1) until seated on mushroom head (2).

Install mushroom head with locknut all the way in tapped bore (3) in the
frame and tighten until hand-tight.

(-) Adjusting mushroom head on each side

WARNING
Case installation not in compliance with correct procedure.
Impairment of road safety.
Cases may not wobble and must be secured free from play. Re-adjust
the mushroom-head retainer if play develops over the course of time.

Check

Install case (1) (see Rider's Manual) and with the case installed, check
the position of mushroom head (2) relative to case carrier (3).

Result:

Case wobbles and is not seated against the case carrier.

Measure:

Remove the case (see Rider's Manual).

Slacken locknut (4) and slightly back off mushroom head (2), then
retighten locknut (4).

Tightening torques
Locknut to mushroom head
M8 15 Nm

Install the case (see Rider's Manual).

Result:

Case wobbles and is not seated against the case carrier.

Measure:

Repeat the adjustment procedure until the case latching mechanism

engages perfectly and the case is correctly seated against the case
carrier.
Result:

Case is seated against the case carrier and the case latching
mechanism engages correctly.
Measure:

No measures necessary.
Result:

Case is seated against side panel.

Measure:
Installing wedges on case carriers and adjusting mushroom heads
Slackening and removing screws

Loosen screws (1) and (2).

Remove screws (3).
Remove screws (1).

Installing wedges

Install wedges (1) on left and right as necessary between rear frame (2)
and case carrier (3).
Tighten screws (4) until hand-tight, taking care not to trap lugs (5) of the
rear wheel cover; if necessary press the lugs in when installing the
screws.

Measure:

No action necessary.
Checking that mushroom heads are set to specification

NOTICE
If distance A measured at the mushroom head after adjustment is greater
than specified, contact an authorised BMW Motorrad dealer.

After adjustment, make sure that distance (A) at the mushroom head is
not greater than specified.
