Acceptance
Gender. What is gender? The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines it as “the behavioral,
cultural, or psychological traits typically associated with one sex”. Google defines it as “the
state of being male or female (typically used with reference to social and cultural differences
rather than biological ones)”. Gender is what a person is; it is the definition of their traits, their
behavior, their preferences, and everything else about them. In layman’s terms, gender is the
classification of humans based on how they fit into this world.
We live in a realm that, inevitably, has been built and powered by all of the past cultures,
religions, beliefs, and idealisms; we live in a reality wherein centuries from now, what we have
in the present will have become history, and just yet another piece of the ever-expanding puzzle
of the mystery of life.
We live in a time where gender stereotypes have been bent: stereotypes similar to what
has been depicted in Aristophanes’ play, Thesmophoriazusae wherein women are imprisoned by
the depths of subjugation – stereotypes with women being nothing more than housewives –
typecasts wherein men are treated as a higher class – limitations which dictate that a man may
only fall in love with a woman and vice versa – it goes on. All of those ideas from society that
used to label gender – if not all, then most – have been greatly changed. If in the past, women
were almost merely used as objects of pleasure and luxury, then today, women have become
powerful, resilient people who know their worth, and have learned to fight against abuse and
subjugation.
We live in a period where there are struggles within our population – not only in politics
or economics, but also in humanity. Struggles between feminists and those who oppose their
beliefs; struggles between the LGBTQ community and those who shun them; struggles between
those who have accepted that society is not the same as it was before – and those who have not.
And many, many more.
Love is love. Kindness is kindness. Sympathy is sympathy. Just like how water will
always be water – how air will always be air – how God will always be the one and only God - A
person is a person – with a heart, a brain, and a soul. Regardless of someone’s gender,
appearance, and qualities, they are and always will be a human being who deserves no less
understanding and affection than anyone else. A mere judgement from our society-blind eyes
shall never be used to determine any person’s worth.
Among many of the largest debated matters across the globe nowadays, gender is one of
the most controversial and one of the most widely varied issues. This is because of the
voluminous civilizations, traditions, and religions within world history that has formed different
beliefs and understandings, and because of the contrasted conditions between the classes of
society in the six continents that humans live in. For some, reconciling with the facts that; first,
no woman is lesser than any man – and second, man and woman are not the only genders may
be confounding or challenging to adjust to, at first. While for others, there is absolutely nothing
wrong with any of these. But regardless of belief, religion, stereotypes, and idealisms – all
people should be viewed and treated equally. Regardless of social status and gender, there must

be no discrimination. There should only be acceptance, sympathy, and peace. For the greater
good.
