Introduction to
Engineering Dynamics

Brief Background to Engineering Dynamics:

 Principles of dynamics were developed when accurate

measurement of time became possible
 Galileo Galilei – first major contributor to the field of
dynamics; he made experiments using pendulums and
falling objects.
 Isaac Newton – known to have the most significant
contributions in dynamics; he formulated the three
fundamental laws of motion and the law of universal
gravitational attraction.
 Euler, D’Alembert, Lagrange and others – developed
important
Prepared by Engr. FMMulimbayan techniques in dynamics based on these
Newton’s Laws

Engineering Dynamics

Application Areas of Engineering Dynamics

 Use in structural design of any vehicle, e.g. automobiles,

airplanes
 Considered in the design of mechanical devices, e.g.
motors, pumps, movable tools, industrial manipulators
and machinery
 Important in the prediction of the motions of artificial
satellites, projectiles and spacecraft

Introduction to
Engineering Dynamics

Mechanics
Concerned with state of rest or motion
of bodies subjected to action of forces

Statics Dynamics
Concerned with bodies at rest Concerned with bodies that
or moving at constant velocity
Prepared by Engr. FMMulimbayan have accelerated motion
Introduction to
Engineering Dynamics

Recall:
 Particle – object that have dimensions that are of no
consequence in the analysis of problems under
mechanics
 Rigid-body – combination of large number of
particles occupying fixed positions with respect to
each other before and after applying a load; size
should be considered in the analysis
 Deformable body – a body which exhibits
deformation when subjected to particular loading

Prepared by Engr. FMMulimbayan

Introduction to
Engineering Dynamics

The subject of dynamics will be presented in two

parts:
 Kinematics – study of the geometry of the motion
 Kinetics – study of the forces that cause the motion

Also, note that motion of a body can be:

 Rectilinear (1-D) – motion along straight line
 Planar (2-D) – e.g. curvilinear, projectile, circular
motion
 3-Dimensional
