SYLLABUS AND GRADING POLICY FOR

Band
Fall 2017

CLASS LOCATION: CHS Band Hall

INSTRUCTOR: Mr. Evans

Course Objectives:
Learn how to create music through instrumental ensemble.

Requirements:
 Ensemble Rehearsal
 Performances Football Games, Parades, Pep Rallies, UIL Events, and Concerts
 Consistent daily practice routine

 Students who enroll in Marching Band should be prepared to commit themselves to at


least 60 minutes of weekly practice.
 Practice areas are available in the band hall before and after school
 Absences are only excused with PRIOR notification to a performance. You may
contact Mr. Evans at 995 6430 ext 211 or david.evans@comfortisd.net
(preferred) All missed performances will be made up during the class period
following the performance.

Textbooks and Assigned Material: provided

Grading Criteria: 70% - music, attendance, and “progress”


30% - performance grade Football Games, Parades, Pep Rallies,
Concerts other than the two schedule final exams (see below, winter and spring concerts)

Each rehearsal will be graded. The grading criteria are as follows:


To receive a 100:
 notes and rhythms must be played accurately with the inclusion of all written
articulations, dynamic signs, and style;
 student must display proper balance, blend and tuning among the ensemble.
 student attends all performances

To receive a 90-99:
 notes and rhythms must be played accurately with the inclusion of all written
articulations, dynamic signs, and style.
 Student attends all performances
To receive a 80-89:
 notes and rhythms learned accurately but lacking articulation, dynamics, and style
 Student attends all performances

To receive a 70-79:
 student cannot perform notes and rhythms of most composition(s).
 Student attends most performances

To receive an 0-69:
 student cannot perform notes and rhythms of composition (s) and no effort has been
put-forth to learn composition(s). Student has unexcused absences from
performances.

Measurable Objectives: Manifest the ability to read and perform music

Requirements for Final Evaluation:


 Repertoire: Performance of prepared pieces

Final Exams: Performance – Fall - Thursday, December 7th 7pm CHS Cafetorium
Spring – Tuesday, May 15th. Students who miss this performance will be required to
make it up during the scheduled exam time the last week of the semester.

I have read and understood the rules and expectations of being the Comfort High School
Marching Band. I also understand that by signing this paper I am giving my consent for
my child to travel and participate with the CHS Band for the listed events on the course
syllabus.
