Lesson Idea Name: Weather Forecast

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 1st
Content Standard Addressed:
S1E1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate weather data to identify weather patterns.
a. Represent data in tables and/or graphs to identify and describe different types of weather and the
characteristics of each type.
b. Ask questions to identify forms of precipitation such as rain, snow, sleet, and hailstones as either solid (ice)
or liquid (water).
c. Plan and carry out investigations on current weather conditions by observing, measuring with simple
weather instruments (thermometer, wind vane, rain gauge), and recording weather data (temperature,
precipitation, sky conditions, and weather events) in a periodic journal, on a calendar, and graphically.
d. Analyze data to identify seasonal patterns of change.

Technology Standard Addressed: Knowledge Constructor

Selected Technology Tool: PowerPoint

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

When creating content with PowerPoint, the creator can accommodate the needs of all students within the
presentation or movie. One can include pictures and words of different languages in order to reach students
who may be struggling with putting words with pictures, or students who are trying to learn a new language.
In addition, students who are individually viewing the presentation or movie may take it at their own pace,
and go back or pause when needed. Lastly, fonts can be easily adjusted for students who may need a bigger
font in order to read more efficiently.

Lesson idea implementation:

This PowerPoint is a great introduction to the weather unit. The teacher introduces the definition of
weather and the different types of weather in order to begin a discussion of what weather means to the
students. After the PowerPoint movie is presented, the students will go back to their seats and create a flip
book of the different types of weather. They will take a piece of construction paper and fold it in half (hot dog
style). Next, they will cut one half into six equal parts. Since the other half will not be cut, this will leave the
illusion of a flip book when it is folded. On the top of each section, the students will cut and paste the clipart
pictures from the PowerPoint. When they flip each section up, they will write the word that the picture
describes. For example, on the first section, they will paste a picture of the sun. When they flip that section
up, they will write “sunny”.
After this activity, the students will have a concrete understanding of what weather is. They will begin
every morning with identifying what the weather outside is, and have a monthly bar graph where they record

the weather. At the end of every month, they will go over any patterns of the weather that may have
occurred. This will extend the learning because not only are we thinking about the weather, the different
types, and the characteristics, they will also be utilizing this knowledge every day and creating graphs and
class discussions.

Reflective Practice:
Some other technology tools that the students can use throughout this process it to check the weather every
day online. In addition, one can use an online template to create a bar graph, and have the students use the
smart board/ computer to add in a picture of the weather to the bar graph.
