Dear Boerne Middle School South Parent/Guardian,

This is to inform you that an individual at Boerne Middle School South has been diagnosed
with Tuberculosis (TB). This individual is under medical care and supervision. The Texas
Department of State Health Services (DSHS) Region 8 is working closely with leaders from
Boerne ISD and Boerne Middle School South to protect the health of students, teachers,
staff, and the community.

A few facts about Tuberculosis (TB)

 TB is a disease that most often affects the lungs.
 TB can be prevented and cured with proper treatment.
 TB can live in the body without making a person sick.
 TB spreads through the air, but not easily. For TB to spread from one person to
another, they must be close together, in a closed space, over a long period of time.

TB information meetings
DSHS will hold meetings at Boerne Middle School South to share information about TB and
answer your questions.
Locations:
 English sessions in the cafeteria
 Spanish sessions in the library
Dates and times:
 Thursday, February 22nd at 5:00PM and at 7:00PM
 Tuesday, February 27th at 5:00PM and at 7:00PM

TB testing
DSHS will contact all students who may have been exposed to TB. We will provide a free
blood test that tells if someone has been infected with TB. A positive test means a person’s
body has reacted against TB. A positive test DOES NOT mean a person is sick or contagious
to others. We will provide medication to prevent TB disease free of charge for anyone who
tests positive. TB testing will be held March 21st at Boerne Middle School South.

Why are we not testing your child right now?

The TB blood test doesn’t turn positive right away. It takes 8-10 weeks after a person is
exposed to TB before the test turns positive. We will need to test some students a second
time several weeks later to make sure they have not been infected.

Esto es para informarle de que una persona en la escuela de Boerne Middle School South ha
sido diagnosticada con tuberculosis (TB). El individuo está bajo cuidado médico y
supervisión. El Departamento Estatal de Servicios de Salud de Texas (DSHS, por sus siglas
en inglés) está trabajando con líderes de Boerne ISD y la escuela Boerne Middle School
South para proteger la salud de los estudiantes, maestros, personal, y la comunidad.

Unos pocos datos sobre la tuberculosis (TB):

 La TB es una enfermedad que más frecuentemente afecta a los pulmones.
 La TB se puede prevenir y curar con tratamiento adecuado.
 La TB se propaga a través del aire, pero no fácilmente. Para que la TB se propague

Examen de tuberculosis:
DSHS (por sus siglas en inglés) contactará a todos los estudiantes que puedan haber estado
expuestos a la TB. Proporcionaremos una prueba de sangre gratuita. Esta prueba indica si
alguien ha sido infectado con TB. Una prueba positiva significa que el cuerpo de una
persona ha reaccionado contra la TB. Una prueba positiva NO significa que una persona esté
enferma o sea contagiosa. Proporcionaremos medicamentos para prevenir la enfermedad de
TB sin cargo para cualquiera con una prueba positiva. Las pruebas de tuberculosis se
llevarán a cabo el 21 de marzo en la escuela Boerne Middle School South.
