often had parents ask me for homework for
their children but finding and managing
homework for our unique learners sometimes
seemed an impossible task on top of
everything else. If you like this preview, please

Thanks so much!

Homework Week 1 Vocabulary
for Early Learners
Welcome to week 1 of your child’s homework!
These materials are designed to provide
interactive language practice for students who
need to build vocabulary and develop beginning
language skills.
Each day will feature a different word/picture.
However, below are some additional suggestions
for activities or questions you can work on with
your student.
1. Find an example of each object in your house.
Have your student match the picture and
object.
2. Ask questions about functions.
 What do you eat?
 What do you read?
 What do you write with?
 What do you play with?
3. Practice labeling and pointing to features of
each item.
 Apple: skin, stem, leaf, seed, core
 Book: pages, spine, cover, words,
pictures, author, illustrator
 Pencil: point, eraser, wood
 Ball: colors, pentagons, hexagons
4. Ask questions about categories.
 Which one is a food?
 Which one is a toy?
 Which ones are school supplies?
5. Play hide and seek with the objects or
pictures. Hide them around the room and have
your student find them and then switch roles.
If your student needs help, give them
directions using prepositions.

Homework for Early Learners
Family Letter
Dear Families,

This letter contains information about the homework assignments I will be sending home
with your child this year. Some of you may be wondering, “How could my child possibly
complete homework?” Read on and hopefully I will answer all of your questions.
First, this homework program is not meant to be independent practice for your child.
Instead, it is designed to be interactive, language-building practice for family members to
do with their students. The structured part of the program should take ten to twenty
minutes each day, four days per week.
These homework materials are ideal for students with emerging language and/or who are
non-verbal. Materials also can be used with students who do not have fine motor skills yet.
Feel free to adapt and use the materials in the best way for your student’s needs.
Organization of Materials
Each week there will be four vocabulary words. Each day one of the words will be featured
with multiple skills to practice with that word. However, all four words will be pictured on
the right side of the page for daily review. It is recommended you begin each session by
reviewing all four vocabulary words. The family member can touch and model naming each
word. Ask the student to point to the correct word when it is named. End each session by
reviewing the vocabulary words again.

Each page begins with matching pictures. This question is a way for students to start the
homework time successfully and to build attention to the task. Other skills on the pages
will vary but will often include finding associated items (goes with), identifying features
of objects, finding the same or different pictures, finding all examples of an item
(generalization), one to one correspondence, counting, sequencing, and answering wh-
questions. Fine motor, tracing, and coloring activities are also included.

Written directions are limited in order to simplify the visual presentation. Please let me
know if you need clarification on any part. Just remember the goal of these homework
assignments is to promote regular, structured practice for building vocabulary and
language skills. It is okay to be flexible and to adapt your use of these materials to meet
the needs of your child.
Each week you will receive three different parts of the homework program. First, the
coversheet will include vocabulary pictures, specific instructions, and additional
generalization activities. Second, four homework pages are provided. Finally, a Homework
Communication Form is given for you to record information about your child’s
performance as well as feedback or questions that would be helpful to the teacher. Please
return this form to me when you complete the assignments.

Please let me know if you have any questions,
