1. Learn and understand the life of Dr. Jose P. Rizal from his birth to his martyrdom.
2. Analyze the impact of Rizal’s life in relation to his contribution on the socio-political situation of the Philippines then and the present
time.
3. Critically understand Rizal’s heroism and realize the significance of his ideas in the present time
4. Interpret the selected poem, essays and novels and its impact to socio-political situation during the past and present time.

Course Description

This is a course on the literary works of Jose Rizal. Students will be introduced to the historical elements or narratives surrounding the birth of
his thoughts, ideals and beliefs. The course will discuss Rizal’s life, R.A. 1425, excerpts from his Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, some
poems, plays and socio-political essays. The works will be given multiple meanings and interpretations – postcolonial, feminist, historical,
sociological, formalist, biographical, etc. A lot of current issues would be discussed alongside with the interpretation and analyses of the texts.
Course Objective

At the end of the course, the students shall be challenged:

1. to know Philippine history -- especially the period that gave birth to Jose Rizal;

2. to gain insight in the cultural/moral values of the Filipinos as depicted by the characters and ideas of the writings;

3. to analyze/evaluate/assess literary intent and compare it with what were discussed in published analyses/interpretations;

4. to analyze the various issues surrounding the experiences divulged by the writings;

5. to decipher or give multiple meanings and interpretations of the literary works; and

6. to develop ethical judgment on contemporary issues relevant to experiences tackled by the readings.

intimate and personal life of Dr. Jose Rizal and how events in Europe and Philippines intertwined in making him the father of

national consciousness.

Course Objectives

At the end of the semester, seventy-five percent of the students will:

1. Analyze historical and cultural events in Europe and the Philippines that led to the development of the national

consciousness of the Filipinos.

2. Recognize the values and importance of Dr. Jose Rizal and other heroes’ sacrifice for the country.
3. Exhibit good traits through the example Dr. Jose Rizal imparted before his death.

4. Enumerate Rizal’s achievement and ideas; and enhance these as guides to over all welfare of the community.

5. Develop ideas and concept in understanding heroism and nationalism

6. Instill human values and cultural refinement through the humanities and social science.
