your answers algebraically whenever possible; when you do use your calculator, write down all
relevant mathematics. *The answers must be written on the exam.

1. The test scores of 40 students are listed below. Construct a boxplot for the data set.

25 35 43 44 47 48 54 55 56 57

59 62 63 65 66 68 69 69 71 72

72 73 74 76 77 77 78 79 80 81

81 82 83 85 89 92 93 94 97 98

2. Refer to the table which summarizes the results of testing for a certain disease.
Positive Test Negative Test
Result Result
Subject has the disease 111 4

the disease
If one of the results is randomly selected, what is the probability that it is a false negative
(test indicates the person does not have the disease when in fact they do)?

to an ethnic minority?

4. Lengths of pregnancies are normally distributed with a mean of 268 days and a standard
deviation of 15 days.

5. Thirty randomly selected students took the calculus final. If the sample mean was 95 and the
standard deviation was 6.6, construct a 99% confidence interval for the mean score of all
students.

6. An article in a journal reports that 66% of American fathers take responsibility for child care.
A researcher claims that the figure is lower for fathers in the town of Littleton. A random
sample of 234 fathers from Littleton yielded 138 who help with child care.

7. A test of abstract reasoning is given to a random sample of students before and after they
completed a formal logic course. The results are given below. At the 0.05 significance level,
test the claim that the mean score is not affected by the course.

Before 74 83 75 88 84 63 93 84 91 77
After 73 77 70 77 74 67 95 83 84 75

8. A public bus company official claims that the mean waiting time for bus number 14 during
peak hours is less than 10 minutes. Karen took bus number 14 during peak hours on 18
different occasions. Her mean waiting time was 7.6 minutes with a standard deviation of 2.3
minutes. At the 0.01 significance level, test the claim that the mean waiting time is less than
10 minutes.
