SIMPLE RANDOM SAMPLE (SRS)

MOORE AND MCCABE DEFINE A SIMPLE

 Smaller, manageable version of a large group.

To create a simple random sample, there are six steps:
(a) defining the population; (b) choosing your sample
size; (c) listing the population; (d) assigning numbers to
the units; (e) finding random numbers; and (f) selecting
your sample.

Advantages:
 Ease of assembling the sample
 Fair and unbiased (equal opportunity for each
member, reduce the potential for human bias)
 Sample is not a representative of the population,
the random variation is called sampling error.

Disadvantages:
 Complete list of all the members of the
population is required and up-to-date
 Not for large populations

“Remember that one of the goals of research is to be

able to make conclusions pertaining to the population
from the results obtained from a sample”
