List two of the additional features

of good synthesis writing listed in
chapter 9.
Chapter 9 Highlights
• Features of effective synthesis writing include
– Summary and transition sentences
– Summarized and paraphrased evidence from sources
– Connections made between sources
• Synthesis writing involves orchestrating a conversation
between various authors by organizing and presenting
sources in a way that shows the writer’s take on the issue.
– The lit review is your opportunity to discuss the
conversation between your sources without inserting
your claim.
– This will be continued in the research paper where you
will also include your claim about the topic.
Chapter 9 Highlights cont.
• Research and writing are simultaneous processes; writers
plan and draft their paper as they continue to find and read
sources.
– Project 2 is the beginning of your research and writing,
but you will be continuing both in Project 3 where you
will be asked to bring in new sources as your paper
develops.
• Planning the paper in graphic forms such as a grid or
diagram can help a writer to coordinate several sources and
avoid writing a series of summaries.
Creating a Synthesis Matrix
Synthesis activity
• For today’s class, I want you to begin a synthesis matrix to
help organize the sources you are collecting for your
annotated bibliography.
• This matrix will be due on March 2 via the course website
and should include the eight sources you are using for
project 2. (Homework -- March 2: Synthesis Matrix – “submit
synthesis matrix” button)
• For the remainder of class, work on the synthesis matrix
document provided via the course website.
– Download and save the document as
lastname_firstname_synthesis matrix
– Begin putting information from your sources into the
document.
For Monday
• Read “Lit Review – VanRhys”
– Available on course website: Readings and links –
Readings folder – Lit Review VanRhys
• Be prepared for a reading quiz.
• Be sure to read the sample paper provided.
• There will be a small group activity based on the reading.
