1.0 GENERAL STATEMENT & PREPARATION

These test procedures describe the general test method using TNB REMACO’s test
equipment.

2.0 INSULATION RESISTANCE (IR) & POLARIZATION INDEX (PI) TEST

The insulation resistance test is useful in giving an indication of deteriorating trends in

the insulation system. The insulation resistance values by themselves do not indicate the
weakness of the insulation nor its total dielectric strength. However, they can indicate the
contamination of the insulation and trouble ahead within the insulation system if a
downward trend continues in the insulation resistance values.

The insulation resistance test is mainly to check and verify the conditions of the winding.

2.1 Connect the non-tested windings to the ground/earth.

2.2 Connect the Megger Insulation tester as per diagram below:

Fig. 2.1 Typical set-up for Insulation Resistance (IR) test

2.3 Select PI mode and the output voltage of the Megger insulation tester at 5kV.
2.4 Switch ON the power of Megger Insulation tester and record the insulation
resistance values at the interval of 1 minute until 10 minutes.
2.5 Reduce the voltage to zero and turn OFF the power switch.
2.6 Discharge the stator windings using grounding/earthing stick.
2.7 Repeat the procedures above to measure the IR & PI of the other phase
windings.

Evaluation:

The insulation resistance should be >100MΩ range and Polarization Index

should be >2.0 before testing is performed.

3.0 DISSIPATION FACTOR (TANGENT DELTA) TEST

Dissipation factor tests provide an indication of the dielectric losses within the insulation.
Certain deterioration processes, such as thermal deterioration, moisture absorption and
contamination will increase these losses. Thus, trending of the dielectric loss over time is
an indication of certain types of insulation problems. Test will be carried out under
Ground Specimen Test Mode (GST) for each phase and repeated one by one. The
TANDELTA tests are measured with the CPC100 at 0.2Un until 0.6 Un step voltages
respectively.

3.1 Safety Precautions

3.2.1 The output of this test set can be harmful. As with any high-voltage equipment, caution
must be used at all times and all safety procedures followed.
3.2.2 Read and understand Safety requirements, before proceeding. Be sure that the test
specimen is de-energized and grounded before making connections.
3.2.3 Isolate power equipment to be tested from the high-voltage bus bars and attach
necessary grounds to floating bus bars in accordance with standard company policy,
observing all safety procedures.
3.2.4 Make certain that no one can come in contact with the high-voltage output terminal or
any material energized by the output.
3.2.5 Use protective barriers if necessary. Locate the control unit and high-voltage unit in an
area which is as dry as possible.
3.2.6 Maintain adequate clearances between energized conductors and ground to prevent
arc-over. Such accidental arc-over may create a safety hazard or damage the equipment
being tested.
3.2.7 A minimum clearance of 1 ft (30 cm) is recommended

3.2 Setup

3.3.1 Properly connect the CPC 100 and CP TD1 grounding terminals to the trolley’s ground
bar. Connect the ground bar to earth.
3.3.2 Switch off the CPC 100 at the mains power switch.
3.3.3 Connect the CP TD1’s BOOSTER IN to the CPC 100’s EXT. BOOSTER with the booster
cable.
3.3.4 Connect the CP TD1’s SERIAL to CPC 100’s SERIAL with the data cable.
3.3.5 Connect the Safety A connector at the CP CR500 interface panel to the CPC 100’s
connector for external safety functions using the provided cable.
3.3.6 Connect the LV output on the provided cable to the CP TD1’s connector IN A (red plug)
using the banana cable.
3.3.7 Connect the high voltage cable from the test object to the CP TD1’s high voltage output.
 The high voltage cable is double-shielded and therefore safe. However, the last
50cm of this cable have no shield. Therefore during a test consider this cable a
life wire and due to the high voltage life hazardous!
3.3.8 Connect the low side of the test object to equipotential ground.
3.3.9 Connect the high voltage cables from the test object to all high voltage sockets HV Input
1 or HV Input 2 of the CP CR500 devices depending on the calculated values.
3.3.10 Make sure that the connectors are tightly fit before turning on the high voltage.
3.3.11 Connect the CPC 100 o the mains power supply using the provided cable.
3.3.12 Turn on the CPC 100 at its mains power switch at the left hand side.
3.3.13 The green warning light “O” lights up, showing that the CPC 100 output does not carry a
dangerous voltage or current yet.
3.3.14 Open a TANDELTA test card on the CPC 100.
3.3.15 At the “Mode” list box on the TANDELTA test card (main page), select the “GST” mode
as well the desired test voltages.

3.3.16 The TANDELTA tests are measured with the CPC100 at 0.2Un until 0.6 Un step
voltages respectively.
3.3.17 Start the test by pressing the green I/O (test start/stop) push-button on the CPC 100
front panel.

WARNING
High voltage is now present at the terminals of the test specimen.

3.3.18 Switch off the high voltage with the I/O (test start/stop) push-button. Even if you switched
off the CPC 100, wait until the red I/O warning lights is fully extinguished. As long as this
warning light is lit, there is still voltage potential on the output.
3.3.19 Press the Emergency Stop button on the CPC 100 front panel. Turn the safety key to
“lock” (vertical) and remove the key to avoid anybody accidentally turning on the high
voltage.
3.3.20 Remove the barrier between the high voltage and safe area. Disconnect all cables from
the test set.

IN CASE OF EMERGENCY
High-voltage power can be interrupted immediately by pressing the red EMERGENCY
STOP pushbutton or switching the main breaker OFF.

WARNING

Discharge specimen terminals with a safety ground stick to ground all live parts, then
solidly ground these parts with safety ground jumpers before disconnecting the
instrument leads. Always disconnect test cables from the specimen under test before
attempting to disconnect them at the test set. The test set ground cable should be the
last cable disconnected.
