GRAY HIGHLIGHT- REVISE

TURQUOISE HIGHLIGHT- ADD CITATION

“An education isn’t how much you have committed to memory, or even how much you know.

It’s being able to differentiate between what you do know and what you don’t. It’s knowing

where to go find out what you need to know; and it’s knowing how to use the information you

get.” William Feather

Education is the process of developing the capacities and potentials of an individual to

prepare to be successful in the society. From this perspective, education is serving primarily as

an individual’s development function. It begins at birth and continues throughout life, K. R.

Santhy, (2011). In other words, education models an individual to be ready to interact with the

society. Without education, humans would not be different with other animal races. Thus, the

development of a country starts with an individual, and the key for this growth is still anchored

to the education.

If education models an individual to be ready for the society, habits help an individual to

do productive things with less effort and thought. It is responsible in shaping the individual’s

personality. In the field of education, habits can be used to practice the knowledge and apply it to

learning. Having a study habit would develop potentials in thinking for their learning strategies.

Study habit is an individual ability that anybody can have. Azikiwe (1998) describes the study

habit as “the adopted way and manner a student plans his private readings, after classroom

learning so as to attain mastery of the subject”. According to her, “good study habits are good

assets to learners because they (habits) assist students to attain mastery in areas of specialization

and consequent excellent performance, while opposite constitute constraints to learning and

achievement leading to failure.” Learning how to study is a process that lasts a long-term period.

As an individual goes on studying, more techniques and methods that offers new information

will be discovered leading to more interesting successful direction.

This study can help a lot of students to know the importance of study habits in their life.

As well as to enlighten them that there are difference between the study habits of the female and

male students and how it can affect their academic performance and achievements.

Statement of the Problem

Specifically, this study sought to answer the following questions:

1. What is the study habit of the selected Grade 11 female HUMSS students of Palawan

National School?

2. What is the study habit of the selected Grade 11 male HUMSS students of Palawan

National School?

3. Is there a significant difference on the study habits of the selected Grade 11 male and

female HUMSS student of Palawan National School?

4. What are the preferences of the selected Grade 11 HUMSS students in studying?

5. Is the study habits of the selected Grade 11 male and female HUMSS student of Palawan

National School effective?

Significance of the study

The result of this study aims to contribute and add further knowledge to the parents,

teachers, students and future researchers.

For the parents of the students that is currently studying at Palawan National School, this

will serve as a medium for awareness on the study habits of their children and help them to

achieve higher grades on their academic studies.

For the teachers and education personnel, this will serve as an inspiration for them to be

more passionate for teaching the students and help them grow and develop their academic

performance to gain academic success.

For the students, to have eagerness to study more and do their best to get a high grade and

to be more informed about the benefits of having a study habit.

For the future researchers, this research study will serve as their reference or guide if they

want to conduct the same topic for further study and better results.

Scope and Delimitation

This study is a mixed method research which employs both quantitative and qualitative

design. This research is limited to the study of The Difference between the Study Habits among

Grade 11 HUMSS Students of Palawan National School.

The study will be conducted at Palawan National School, Barangay Manggahan, Puerto

Princesa City. The study started from November 2017 until March 2018. The researchers limited

the study to 50 randomly selected Grade 11students in Palawan National School. This study will

not include the respondents’ academic performance profile and other factors that influence the

student’s study habits. This research will not deal with the socio-demographic conditions of the

respondents such as their age, social status and family background. This study is limited to the

use of a survey questionnaire with questions concerning the difference on the study habits of the
Grade 11 male and female students from Humanities and Social Sciences strand. The researchers

will also gather information from the respondents that will answer how they study and their

preferences in studying.

Study Habits

Study is a part of learning. If you are not studying, you would not be educated. Without

education, people would be ignorant. According to Webster’s New World Dictionary, it defines

‘study’ as following: “the act or process of applying the mind so as to acquire knowledge or

understanding, as by reading, investigating, etc, or careful attention to, and critical examination

and investigation of, any subject, event, etc.” Through studying, humans learned techniques that

taught them to use their time wisely and to avoid distress, and it became a habit that made their

life uncomplicated.

According to Swami Vivekananda (1900) education is for life-building, man-making,

character-building, assimilation of ideas, exposition of completed individuality and enkindling

the urge of spirituality inherent in every mind. Study Habit is an individual ability. Some children

like to read alone, some want to read in a group. Some children read aloud and some read

silently. There is no strict yardstick to measure the type of Study Habits. It may be inherited,

acquired or the child can formulate its own study habits by itself.

“Study habit refers to the method or techniques of effective learning which in turn

involve a set of study skills as organization of time, effective use of time, reading skills, essay

writing, report writing skills, note-taking, examination techniques and even job-hunting skills,”

stated by Percival and Ellington (1984). Meanwhile Fieldman (2006) said that “good study habits

help the student in critical reflection in skills outcomes such as selecting, analysing and

synthesizing.” The first step towards effective study habits is to face up to this reality. One need
not feel guilty if one doesn’t look forward to studying. Once an individual accepts the premise

that studying doesn’t come naturally, it should be apparent that one needs to set up an organized

programme to promote adequate study. Learning how to study is really a long-term process.

(A.S.Arul Lawrence, 2014)

It is actually a lifelong process and one should be ready to modify one’s method of study

according to the need of the time. A simple change can make a big difference in goal setting and

organization of one’s life. Little study has been done looking at the learning habits of students at

any level of the education system especially in Asia, much which is directed to mainly the

western countries. Sawar et al. (2009, p.204) acknowledge the fact that,

Study habits are learning tendencies that enable students to work privately. Azikiwe (1998)

describes the study habit as “the adopted way and manner a student plans his private readings,

after classroom learning so as to attain mastery of the subject”. According to her, “good study

habits are good assets to learners because they (habits) assist students to attain mastery in areas

of specialization and consequent excellent performance, while opposite constitute constraints to

learning and achievement leading to failure”.

Study habit may also involve others although this is an individual improvement. He can still seek

for guidance or motivation.

According to K. Premalakshmi (2012), every Parent wants their child to do well in school and to

learn as much as they possibly can. To be good students, adolescent need to develop good Study

Habits at home and school. Parents can help to develop good Study Habits at home. The learning

needs guidance which must be provided by the teacher for the teaching has been defined as the
guidance of learning. It is possible that bright pupils might score poorly in the examination for

want of proper methods of study, which, without adequate guidance by the teacher will continue

to stand in their way.

Good study habits rest on the attitudes towards work and sense of responsibilities. Child (1981,

p.95) reports that, “studies with human and animal subjects have revealed that an ability to

learn how to solve problems of a given kind can be developed with sufficient practice on tasks of

a similar nature.”

According to Ron Fry (2000), “studying is a skill process. Like any other process, studying has

certain characteristics. They are as follows:

a. An individual makes use of an appropriate study skill in various stages of his life.

b. Studying is not to study harder, just smarter.

c. Studying is breaking a complex process into easy-to-follow simple steps.

d. Studying is more difficult if one is tired, hungry, unhealthy, drunk or stoned. So, studying

needs usage of common sense.

e. A good studying needs one’s responsibility for creating his own study system.

f. An effective studying is based on the usage of available study time.

g. Studying prefers ‘listening’ to seeing, to have little problem on getting the necessary

knowledge” (P. 15).

By adopting appropriate method to the individual based on their own individuality, the transfer

of knowledge and optimum learning can be a maximum development of Study Habits.

METHODOLOGY

Research Design

Participants/Sample

Random sampling under probability sampling method was used to determine the participants in

this research study. The main focus of this study are the Senior High School students under

Humanities and Social Sciences of Palawan National School. The investigator used the Study

Habits Inventory by V.G.Anantha (2004), the researcher’s be able to figure out that a total sample

of 150 respondents will be use and it resulted to a total of 13 survey-questionnaires will be

distributed to each 12 blocks of Senior High School- Humanities and Social Sciences class. For

analyzing and interpreting the data the investigator used percentile analysis, standard deviation

(SD), ‘t’ test, ANOVA and Pearson’s product moment correlation as the statistical techniques.

Sampling Method

The sampling method used in this research is random sampling. The researchers will survey

one hundred fifty (150) random selected Grade 11 & 12 students of HUMSS of Palawan
National School to assess if there is any relationship between their study habits and academic

performance.

Procedure

The researchers figured out to do the following:

1. Evaluate questionnaires
2. Determine the participants
3. Ask to complete the inform consent forms
4. Distribute the questionnaires
5. Gather the answered questionnaires

Research Instrument

The researchers will use survey-questionnaires as their research instrument. Coming from the

survey that will be conducted, their study habits and academic performance will be analyzed if

there is any relationship between the two. In addition, recommendations that will be coming

from the respondent will be evaluated. The researchers will describe each experiences regarding

to any relationship between study habits and academic performance.

Statistical Treatment
In this study, the use of rank/ranking under ordinal data was the most appropriate to

classify orders. Frequency counts was determine under descriptive statistics to visualize

variables. The relationship under inferential data analysis was determine in this study since the

main focus of this research study is the correlation between two variables.
