A Check for Health: The Experiences of First-Aiders

of Iloilo National High School

Abstract

Accidents can occur anywhere, which is why there are first-aiders. First-aiders are those

qualified to give first-aid treatment to an injured person (British Red Cross Society, n.d.).

Anyone could be a first-aider, if approved. They help people all the time, but what do we

really know about them? What is their nature and essence? Knowing their nature and

essence is important, as they are the people prevent injuries worsening until help arrives

(St. John Ambulance, 2015). Furthermore, most first-aid skills are emphasized to be

needed (Pollock, Brown, and Dun,1997), confirming the importance of first-aiders.

Interpretism is the theoretical background of the study, with constructivism as its

epistemology. Phenomenological research is its Methodology, and the method is

interview, as it is most fitting. The data analysis will be an 8-fold process that follows

Hycner’s model with modifications. It was concluded that a first aider is a person who

has the acronym “GROTER”: gentle, respectful, observant, tactful, empathetic, and

resourceful as its set of virtues. A first-aider is also a person who is willing to help a

person who is in need. Finally, It is the responsibility of a first-aider to take care of the

people in their vicinity, and to make sure that when they do get injured, their injury is

treated properly.

Introduction

Accidents can occur anywhere. It can occur on the road, on the school, or even in the

safety of your own home. May it be major or minor; these injuries can be fatal if left

untreated. Sure there are hospitals where the injury can get treatment, but what if there

was so little time that waiting for the ambulance means risking the victim’s life? Enter

first-aiders. According to the British Red Cross Society (n.d.), “A first aider is someone

who is qualified to give first aid treatment in the event of an injury or illness”. These

people are anywhere and could be anyone, as long as get an approval is given. But really

now, what are first-aiders? What is their nature? Their duties? Their responsibilities?

What drives them to help people? They save lives all the time, but their nature and

essence is not really pondered upon. Thus, in this study, the researchers will seek the

answers that were asked before: what is the nature and essence of first-aiders?

The need to know what their essence is is quite important, as they are the people who

gives a person temporary aid, preventing complications in the injury, until the victims get

proper treatment (St. John Ambulance, 2015). This may seem like a minor thing, but as

Pollock, Brown, and Dunn (1997), stated, the perceived importance of most prehospital

skills, or paramedic skills, is high and the emphasis placed in having the need of those

skills is very high as well. This shows how important prehospital skills, or first-aid, is,

thus confirming the importance of first-aiders. Also, knowing the essence of a first-aider

will help us know what we need in order for us to help people in times of emergency, as
Luna St., La Paz, Iloilo City, 5000 Philippines

their traits and personalities will be the guide needed in order to perform first-aid

successfully.

This study is intended for first-aiders, both fresh and experienced, for people who plan to

educate first-aiders, and for people who supervise over first-aiders. This study can be of

significance to the intended audience, the people who were stated above, as they could

use this study as a guide to improve their performance in the field of first-aid treatment.

This study can also help future or present researchers, who will use this study as a

reference in their own study. In order for the study to answer its questions and help the

intended audience, the study generally aims to determine the nature and essence of a first-

aider. Specifically however, the study aims to find out the traits and responsibilities of a

first-aider. The study also aims to know what are the duties or tasks that a first-aider in

Iloilo National High School are.

Theoretical Framework

The framework of this study is based on the framework presented by Gray (2004). The

study used constructivism as its epistemology, for the study focuses in the experiences of

first-aiders and this epistemology helps in expanding the general knowledge with regard

to the topic. The study’s theoretical background will be Interpretivism, because the

answers that we seek rely on, as Crotty (1998) would say it, a “culturally derived and

historically situated interpretations of the social life-world”. The method that the study

will be using is an in-depth, direct, unstructured interview, as this method coincides with
Luna St., La Paz, Iloilo City, 5000 Philippines
Telefax: (033) 320-0846 E-mail: contactus@iloilonhs.edu.ph

the framework the study set. The data will be analyzed using Hycner (1985)’s model of

phenomenological analysis with modifications. This process of data analysis will have

eight steps namely: (1) Transcription, (2) Bracketing and the Phenomenological

Reduction, (3) Delineating units of general meaning, (4) Clustering units of relevant

meaning, (5) Determining themes from clusters of meaning, (6) Writing a summary for

each individual interview, (7) Identifying general and unique themes, and (8), Writing a

composite summary.

Methodology

The participants were all members of the Paramedics of Iloilo National High School in

order guarantee that the participants will have a decent experience in first aid. The

informants were all acquaintances of one of the researchers, decreasing the tension of the

participants during the interview proper.

The participants were given a letter of invitation, inviting them to be the participant of the

study. The invitation letter contained information regarding the study, and their roles. The

letter also mentions about their anonymity in the study, where their names will not be

mentioned in the study, and will only be aliased. The letter also states that the

information collected will be kept safely, and after 6 months, the information collected

will be destroyed/deleted. The letter states that the participant can withdraw at any time

and it will not be held against him/her, and he/she can ask questions related to the study

at any time. If the participant has no more questions and is satisfied, the participants and
Luna St., La Paz, Iloilo City, 5000 Philippines
Telefax: (033) 320-0846 E-mail: contactus@iloilonhs.edu.ph

their parents may sign the consent form on the back, stating that they are willing to

partake in this study.

In the interview, before any recorded questioning began, the researchers asked the

participants if they can be audio recorded. For extra precaution and so that the data can be

improved, one researcher took down notes, another one checked the movement of the

interviewer, which was another researcher, and the remaining researcher tracked the

movement of the participant. Of course, permission was asked beforehand.

After the interview, the researchers started transcribing, or typing the interview syllable

by syllable, the interviews. After transcribing, the researchers analyzed the data,

bracketed it, and interpreted the data given through the participant’s eyes. Then, by

rereading the transcriptions, relistening the interviews, the researchers will take note of

all the words the participant has said, the significant actions the participant did, and

condense them, retaining the original words as much as possible. Afterwards, the

researchers selected the details that are relevant to their study and grouped them together

into their respective themes. Then, the researchers made a summary for each participant,

only basing from the themes and the existing interviews. The next thing the researchers

did is to identify which themes are unique, and which themes are not. And with this data,

a composite summary is made.

Analysis & Findings

Case 1: Maria, a 16 year old, spent a lot of her time to the organization and to hold her Jr.

Paramedics right. She has been in the paramedics for 3 years The reason why Maria join

the organization because she wants to develop her skills in first aid. And also she wants

to follow the footsteps of her old sister that is the former president also of the

organization. Maria was doing all her best to have progress and a better clinic and to

serve the patients properly. That’s why this coming summer they will have train the new

applicants of INHS Clinic which is the Junior Paramedics.

Case 2: Bea, a 16 year old, is a paramedic who does her duties and she does it on time.

As a paramedic she wants to discipline herself and serve her patient with tender, love and

care. Bea join the Junior Paramedics organization because her cousin influence her and

also she want to help her co-students, especially the students but in the inside and outside

of the campus. All of her experiences has a great lesson to her to a better woman. During

the curricular activities and events, at school Bea is active to help her patients that are

injured and also who logged on their log book.

The respondent’s average age is between the range of 16- 17 years old they are studying

in an institution wherein they can enhance their capability as a junior paramedics. Each

participant had their own reasons, just as EMS1(2013), has mentioned, but most of their

experiences all have the same theme: They all want to help others, as they had an

experience that they do not want others to have. Looking at this from another perspective,

these actions could be seen as wanting to help people. The participants were able to meet

our standards to find a fit respondents by the researchers. The respondents also give their

best and capabilities to nurture their abilities toward academics. And as a junior

paramedics they also apply the knowledge that they learn during training. And being a

first aider they provide medical care before the arrival, this experience based on the

interviewee. This course is just an enjoying and interactive experience includes spells and

theory and their practical assessments. As we, the researchers we’ve been learned also

that being first aider is not that easy, you must have GROTER according to the

respondents G for Gentle, R for Resourceful, O for Observant, T for Tactful, E for

Empathetic. As we think about this we applied it to ourselves and act as a student of

INHS towards others. This is proven further by several sources. (Ibrar, 2013), has stated

that resourcefulness and being empathetic is a key trait for being a good researcher.

However, the source that is the closest to the interviewer’s answers is kbicol (n.d.)’s list

of traits: Observant, Resourceful, Gentle, Tactful, Sympathetic, and Cheerful. They also

have discussed about the responsibilities and duties of a fist aider, which was cited by

Jones (2015), which was to “provide anything from training assistance, showing people

where plasters are and helping with bandages to giving full care to someone in need. It’s

down to the first aider to provide immediate medical care when needed, which may very

well be lifesaving depending on the severity of the case” Another duty of theirs is to help

prevent the symptoms from getting worse and the pain and suffering of the victim can

also be controlled (Adams Safety Training, 2015). The road to being a first-aider may

have been long for them, they did get something good out of it. One of which was that
Luna St., La Paz, Iloilo City, 5000 Philippines
Telefax: (033) 320-0846 E-mail: contactus@iloilonhs.edu.ph

they learned first-aid, which was helpful, as It affords people with the ability to provide

help during various emergency situations. If someone ingests hazardous substances, or

suffers health-related issues like a heart attack, or if a natural disaster occurs, a person

knowledgeable in first aid becomes more than just another bystander. Instead, they

become an invaluable support not only to victims, but also to professional emergency

responders and medical practitioners (Aldana, 2013).

As we end the interview we have so many learning’s that we cannot think of it one by

one because even though they are juniors they persevere to follow the lead and accept it

whole. Thanking for them that they cooperate in our research.

Implication and Reflection

From the researcher’s perspective, being a first-aider is to become a person who wants to

help people whenever they can. However, being a first-aider is something that is not to be

taken lightly. Being a first-aider shows that you are prepared to save lives, and saving

lives is like walking on a tightrope: one wrong move and all is lost. This just goes to

show that not just anybody can simply waltz in and suddenly become a first-aider. That

person must have the specific traits required in order for them to become at least a decent

first-aider, and some of these are in the acronym “GROTER”, which means gentle,

resourceful, observant, thoughtful, empathetic, and respectful. Now, imagine if a first-

aider does not have at least one of these traits. It would be very chaotic. That first-aider
Luna St., La Paz, Iloilo City, 5000 Philippines
Telefax: (033) 320-0846 E-mail: contactus@iloilonhs.edu.ph

will not be very good at his/her job, and he/she will most likely end up injuring the

patient.

However, one thing that we realized during the interview was not mentioned directly, but

is something vital and it is never to panic. In all of their experiences, not once did they

ever mention that they got lost and did not know what to do. Instead, they kept their cool,

thought rationally, and then made decisive actions, which led to them helping another

student out. Therefore, what we believe the two most important things that are required in

being a first-aider is virtue and the will to help people, for that is the essence and nature

of a first-aider.

Thus, we would like to tell all the first-aiders to gain these virtues. Only become a first-

aider when you have attained these, and if you still do not, try. Change your character and

learn to gain the desire to serve people, as a true first-aider truly loves to help a person in

need, is willing to help them, and knows what to do when a problem arises.

X: So, Good afternoon. We would like to thank you for joining us today in interview this

noon. And to start, I’m Juan Carlos Samarista and the one who’s going to be asking the

questions to the interviewer, and these three were going to be the note takers. This is Niña

Jubelag, Brianna Orpeza and Denise Asong.

X: So, as we have stated earlier and as stated in the letter that everything, the only thing

that we need here is data and your any credentials that you give the names of the people

or your name will be “Alyas”. and the only people who would know is our Research

Adviser, Ma’am Manalo and Us.

X: So.. are you ready to answer?

O: Yes

X: To start, how long have you been to be a First Aider?

O: 3 years.

X: So.. when did you start to become a first aider?

O: in my Grade 8

X: so thankyou. So, how does it feel when you are a first aider?

X: So, uhmm.. Can you expound more what do you feel good when you help the

students?

O: Nami kay gapa thank you sila after sila mabuligan sang first aid treatment, daw

kanami sg feeling daw ka confident ka.

X: Ok, Thank you. So, why did you become to be a first aider?
Luna St., La Paz, Iloilo City, 5000 Philippines
Telefax: (033) 320-0846 E-mail: contactus@iloilonhs.edu.ph

O: I did become a first aider because uhm gusto ko makabulig sa mga students sang

INHS kag of course sa Faculty and Staff nga maka provide sang medical assistance sa ila.

O: So.. there are many ways you can actually help the students and teachers of the INHS.

O: So.. why did you decide that you want to become a first aider?

O: Okay so, What do you think does it mean, or What defines a first aider, ano’ng what

does the definition of first aider or What is the essence of being a first aider.

X: As a first aider, you needed to be a Gentle, Resourceful,

O: (uhm.. what does it mean?)

X: Ah, uhm First Aider wait. Uhm ang first aid is a medical treatment nga gina hatag sa

isa ka patient before the medical assistant nga ma abot.

O: So, what do you think is the duty or the responsibility of the first aider in your own

opinion.

O: What are the duties f the first aider?

X: Duties is to serve and to help them

O: uhmm, ang.. to be specific, what are the things that you do in being as a first aider or

what you are doing

Luna St., La Paz, Iloilo City, 5000 Philippines
Telefax: (033) 320-0846 E-mail: contactus@iloilonhs.edu.ph

X: Ga apply lang sang First Aid Treatment, basic first aid treatment nga mabal an sang

mga First aiders.

O: So, the.. uhmm. Thank you. So, do you think, does it take to become a first aider?

What are the things the personality

X: Personality of the first aider is the GROWTHER

X: First the Gentle, Resourceful, Observant, Tactful, Respectful and Empathetic

O: So, by GROWTHER (if my pronouncation is correct) So by Growther what do you

mean by that? Can you please explain more why is it important in that

X: Uhmm Growther, G gentle ang uhmm, so yu need to be gentle sa imo nga patient para

maging dapat may Tender Love and Care ka sa iya so that indi sya bala masakitan sa imo

nga pag ano sa iya sa pag treatment.

O: So what do you think could happened, if ever you were not being gentle on a patient

or to your treatment.

X: Indi sya maging comfortable sa imo nga gina apply nga first aid or somehow

masakitan sya kag maka feel bad sya bala.

O: So, have you had any experiences were you had to be gentle or you had to follow this

for you to do it successfully?

X: Yes, uhmm ang experience ko in last year, ang isa ka student nga na fractured sya so

kailangan gid eh assist mayo ang iya nga kamot nga indi ma move kailangan gid

butangan sang bandage nga indi gid ma touch ang iya nga whole nga kamot nga dapat ma

care gid mayo.

Luna St., La Paz, Iloilo City, 5000 Philippines
Telefax: (033) 320-0846 E-mail: contactus@iloilonhs.edu.ph

O: Okay so, Thankyou. So.. after you said gentle, you said resourceful can you please

explain to us, Why do you need to be uhhh… Resourceful?

X: Resourceful, uhm for example in my experience.

gamiton.

O: Okay, So.. you also said that uhhh… at your first aider is Observant so can you please

explain?

X: Observant, ang during the flag uhmm syempre kay aga pa, damo students nga feel

dizzy bala. So gina observe gid namon kay pirme gid gakatabo nga may gaka lipong so,

kami man gyapon ma assist sa ila kag ipadala sa clinic.

O: Next is the you also said that you need to be Tactful

in a nice way kung ano ang iya nga gina batyag kag ma sya lang daan maka feel sang iya

nga gna batyag so ikaw lang maka ask sa iya sang mayo.

O: So, have you ever had uhm some experience that is show that you have to be Tactful

to get the answers that you needed successfully

Luna St., La Paz, Iloilo City, 5000 Philippines
Telefax: (033) 320-0846 E-mail: contactus@iloilonhs.edu.ph

O: Okay, so thankyou. How about beimg respectful, why do you need to be respectful

when you are a first aider?

X: Uhm sympre as a tawo kita kailangan ta man mag respect sa aton nga co-Student,

syempre may patient ka you need to be Respectful. For example, opposite sex kamo kag

ikaw first aider so you need to be respect your patient bskan ano pana sya.

O: So what do you think woul happen if the first aider is not being respectful when

treating his patient

like daw mahadlokan simo nga daw indi sya comportable mag storya kag indi sya mag

amin sang tuod2 ya nag na feel.

O: Okay, so thankyou vey much for the ano uhm the. So, next is can you share your

experience when you was a first aider?

So muto kailangan

gid sya namon eh dal on sa hospital

X: So do you have anymore experiences happened to you during of course a paramedic?

clinic
Luna St., La Paz, Iloilo City, 5000 Philippines
Telefax: (033) 320-0846 E-mail: contactus@iloilonhs.edu.ph

X: So, in your experience what was the usually in standard procedure or what you have

done for example a person fainted. What do you usually do?

kag comfortable

X: Okay thankyou. So, as you treated the person then she is already good to go, when did

he, what did they usually do? What happens to them?

O: Uhmm.. They feel better kag uhm seldom man lang ang gapa thankyou pero okay

japon kay feeling better man kami gyapon kay naka bulig kami

X: So you feel better right? So what do you mean better? Can you please explain? A little

more

Student

X: So, how important do you think is being a first aider?

O: Important gid na sya kay you never know for example subong nga may matabo bi for

example nga may mapilasan nga studyante or diin ka man subong like muna dason kung

X: So can you share some experience that you realized that being a first aider

O: Like sa balay namon like may na sore eyes si mama ko then wala may naka kabalo sa

amon kung ano ang ubrahon, so ako kay bal an ko ang first aid so ako nag ano sa iya nag

apply sang first aid ko nga nabal an

feel being a

15. first aider?

16. O: Being a first aider is enjoyable and kung makabulig ka sa mga co-students

mo, sa

17. mga teachers nga not feeling well shempre himu-on mo gid best mo para

maging ok sila

mas

20. nadugangan pagid knowledge uhmm.. ko.

21. X: So thank you. So when did you become a first aider? Why did you want to

become a

may

26. mapilasan maskin sa first aid lang may.. ma maka cure ko sa amon family or

sa akon

27. man self.

28. X: What does it mean or ano ang definition para sa imo or ano ang kailangan

gid nimo

29. ma bal-an para maging first aider ka like what is the definition? The essence?

30. O: Be ahh..first aider amo na sa ang medical treatment ang first aid ang.. first

aid gid

31. nga gina butang mo para ma… ma prevent para ma prevent, ma avoid para

indi maglala

33. X: What do you think are the duties of a first aider?

34. O: Uhm.. Duties sang first aider. Ahh to serve people ahm.. cure them and..

ah.. to make

Telefax: (033) 320-0846 E-mail: contactus@iloilonhs.edu.ph

38. their responsibilities?

39. O: Respon.. ahh….. Responsibilities of being a first aider uhmm..

40. X: Ang..For example there is… is there responsibility of a first aider to ahm..

to watch

41. over the people… the students incase anything happens to them or anything?

42. O: Shempre ang.. ggg.. ang responsibility sang first aider nga tan-awon ang

co-students

43. ya or kung sin-o man nga tawo sa palibot ya nga unconscious sa e.. sa ila

lawas kag

makabulig sila

45. kag afterwards maging thankful man sa ila ang gin buligan nila.

46. X: So what do you think does it take to become a first aider? What do you

need. Ano

47. kailangan mo para maging first.. para maging good first aider?

48. O: So being a first aider dapat ahmm. GROTER gid kung G-Gentle, R-

Respectful, ang

49. O-Observant, ang T-Thoughtful ahm kag E-Empathetic kag R-Respect..

Respectful.

50. X: Ok so. GROTER is actually an acronym of the things that you need. So as

51. what doh ya think.. what do you think.. why do you think being Gentle is

important in..?

52. O: Gentle is very important to be ahh for a first aider of course because ah..

shempre

54. mahuya gid sila mag hambal sang ila gina batyag indi sila dayon mag amin

kag siguro

56. X: So why did.. what was the second.. so why do you think ahhh.. ahm..

mmm apar.. first

57. aider must be Resourceful?

58. O: A first aider must be resols.. resourceful because ah..sample bi kung layo

ang clinic

59. sa.. sa.. sa spot niyo kag may patient dira shempre kinanglan mo gid mag

resourceful eh

63. X: So why’d.. why’d.. have you ever had any experiences regarding nga gin

anay kag

70. X: Ok. Thank you. So the next is…… so the next is Thoughtful.. being a

though..

71. thoughtful. So a though.. thoughtful first aider, so why do you think it.. it’s

important to

72. become thoughtful in first aid?

73. O: Being thoughtful ahm….

76. kay duty mo gid na as a first aider.

77. X: So, thank you. What is a.. ahm.. ah so finally you need to be Empathetic,

if I am

78. correct, you need to be empathetic. Why do you think is important to be

empathetic?

79. O: Importante maging empathetic….. importante gid sa first aiding.. sa first

aider maging

83. X: Ok. Thank you. So, can you share your experiences with us.. what.. with

86. ya dayon nag butungay sila so ka danlog bala sang floor nag as in grabe

dayon nahh

87. tumba sa grabe impact sang ulo ya sa salog. Ti kay may hapo sa nga daan. Ti

grabe
