MANCHESTER – Alabama law enforcement officials are investigating the death of a man with eastern
Iowa ties.
Marc Wenger, 46, was found dead at his home in Harvest, Ala. earlier this week. The death was being
investigated as a homicide, according to the Huntsville (Ala.) Times. Investigators at the Madison
County, Ala. Sheriffʼs Office were not immediately available to comment on the investigation.
“It was such a shock,” said Patricia Wenger, of Masonville, Wengerʼs aunt. She heard about the death

Wenger later started a tree service in Alabama. His aunt said she last saw her nephew in 2004 when he
came up to visit from Harvest, a town of about 3,000 people. He had started Wenger Tree Service
there. The windy weather in Alabama provided work opportunities for Marc Wenger, his aunt said.
Even after an injury significantly affected his body, he continued to work hard in his business, said
Patricia Wenger. “Oh, heʼd work and work and work,” she said.

Update with link at 9:12 p.m. — You can visit KCRG for local weather coverage.
CEDAR RAPIDS — The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for almost half the state
on Wednesday, which means that hot temperatures and high humidity are expected. Many parts of
eastern Iowa, including Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Davenport and Fort Madison will be under the advisory
until 9 p.m.
The NWS recommends people drink plenty of water, stay in air-conditioned rooms, and check on
neighbors during the heat wave. The elderly are especially susceptible to heat-related illnesses. During
the advisory temperatures could exceed the 90 degree mark, and heat index readings between 100-110
are likely. If heat index readings reach 110 conditions become life-threatening, according to the weather
service.

INDEPENDENCE – The public had a chance to walk through the new Buchanan County Jail on
Saturday afternoon.
About 300 people toured the structure. The building, which will house inmates and also be a workspace
for law enforcement staff, was financed by a $4.5 million bond passed in 2007. The new jail was built
onto the south side of the countyʼs courthouse. Sheriff Bill Wolfgram said it was a necessary investment
“Itʼs a jail…this is not something that anybody wanted to spend money on,” said Wolfgram.
Wolfgram said the plan was to move all staff and inmates over to new facility in the next week.
The old facility often violated Iowa Department of Corrections standards. The previous jail subjected
staff and inmates to very hot conditions during the summer, for example. If the new jail hadnʼt been built,
Buchanan County might have had to pay other facilities for incarceration costs for years to come.
“We got 70 years out of our facility, which is good,” Wolfgram said of the old jail, which was built in 1939.
That jail was originally built to house only 10 inmates, he said. Over the years space was added to
accommodate more prisoners by renovating the county building. Last night the old jail had around 20
people in custody.
Wolfgram said the new facility could house around 50 inmates, and meets state standards.
The new building was also designed to be more secure. Contraband was passed from visitors to
prisoners at the old facility, said Wolfgram. In the new jail inmates will see their visitors through a video
screen. The jail also has three pods, where prisoners sleep and live.
Wolfgram said the new buildingʼs communications center and offices will allow his 12 deputies to be
more productive and relieve a lot of legwork, like moving inmates back and forth between jails.
Bringing inmates over to the courthouse was also made easier by the design of the new jail, said
Wolfgram. Now deputies can walk people directly into a courtroom and not have to pass through a busy
hallway.
Mary Kay Miller, of Independence, who toured the jail Saturday and participated in a “Jail and Bail”
fundraiser to benefit a local food bank on Friday, got a taste of life behind bars. Miler wore a red and
white jump suit and ate some of the apple sauce. “Itʼs not bad,” she said.

Meanwhile, Kyle took refuge in an apartment building two blocks away from the store. Neighbors
gathered outside of a Pirie Drive building while law enforcement officials pursued Kyle. About two hours
after the robbery he was escorted out of the apartment. Authorities recovered the stolen money and also
found a handgun with Kyle in the apartment. He was arrested on first degree robbery charges.
Singh said a string of robberies has plagued the shop recently. “This is the fourth time in two months,”
he said.
“Three times we got robbed every other night,” said the store owner while standing in a back room just a
few feet away from the looted cash register. The chilling crime lasted about three minutes and it was
captured on a store surveillance camera. Singh said he wanted to share his story because it might help
prevent other crimes from happening. He said he wanted to be helpful to law enforcement as they
investigated.
Singh has been disturbed by the other robberies at his store, but nothing at all like the one on
Wednesday afternoon. He says heʼs built relationships with the community over the two years that heʼs
been doing business on Robins Road. Kids sometimes warm up in the store when the winter turns frigid,
says Singh. “Itʼs just a neighborhood store. Iʼm helping them, they are helping me.”
Singh says the recent spree of holdups is not something he anticipated in the city of about 6,500 people.
“Hiawatha is too small. I never thought there was any crime around here,” he said.
He said the person who robbed his store Wednesday afternoon had been a customer only a few hours

No further information on the incident was immediately available from Hiawatha Police as of 9 p.m.

Police were called to the Quick Mart on Robins Road in Hiawatha around 2:20 p.m. this afternoon.
Police say Kyle entered the store and demanded money. Kyle struck the clerk in the head with the

Police found Kyle as well as the money and gun at a nearby apartment on Pire Drive.
A man identifying himself as the uncle of the woman working inside the convenience store says she was
unharmed and that no one else was inside the store at the time of the incident. He says the suspect
came into the store and put a gun to her head, demanded cash and then took it.
Another witness says her daughterʼs boyfriend is the man who robbed the store. She says her

Kyle was cited by Cedar Rapids Police for driving on a suspended license and minor traffic violations at
5 a.m. Wednesday morning at the intersection of O Ave. NE and Center Point Rd. NE, records show.
At the time of his arrest Wednesday, Kyle was on pretrial supervision for a pending harassment case in
Cedar County. Kyle is accused of harassment of a public officer from an incident June 4, online court
records show.
Kyle was adjudicated in juvenile court in Johnson County on a first-degree robbery charge in July 2009,
online court records show. He and another man were accused of robbing a woman with a BB gun in the
parking lot of the Coralville Perkins just before midnight on January 1, 2007, records show.
Kyle had other legal run-ins as a juvenile, court records show. He was adjudicated on charges of

OXFORD — A gas grill was the source of a fire that ravaged a home in Oxford last night, said Fire Chief
Al Thomas.
Nobody was injured. However, two dogs were taken to a veterinary hospital for treatment. Thomas said
one woman lived in the home, 213 E. Main St. A neighbor helped her escape before firefighters arrived,
said Thomas. The victim was being assisted by the American Red Cross.
Someone passing by the house called firefighters around 9 p.m. Soon five area departments arrived to
battle the blaze. It started in the kitchen and climbed higher and higher. ” It just got up into the rafters up
there and we had a heck of a time getting them out,” said Thomas.
Many people gathered along Main Street to watch. “I was sitting inside of my house and heard a loud
pop,” said Lindsay Schulte, 22, a Main Street resident, who sat across from the scene.
“There was a huge, huge first pop and that was within seconds of the second pop,” she said.
For hours fire trucks and emergency vehicles lined the street. “This is a big deal,” added Schulte.
Oxfordʼs Fire Department was assisted by crews from Amana, Coralville, Tipton and North Liberty.
