Two people were taken to the hospital for

treatment of injuries sustained in a two-vehicle

and Wiley Boulevard SW in Cedar Rapids. A

vehicle traveling south on Wiley hit an

oncoming car around 4 p.m.

Injuries to the driver and passenger of the

southbound vehicle were not considered to be

serious, said Officer Kraig Krueger. The driver

of the northbound vehicle went on her own accord to a local clinic, said Krueger.

Traffic was rerouted around the accident for about 20 minutes, but itʼs moving again. Both vehicles had

Death of man with Iowa ties investigated by Alabama law

enforcement
Posted July 14, 2010 10:52 pm by Christopher Pratt/SourceMedia Group News

MANCHESTER – Alabama law enforcement officials are investigating the death of a man with eastern

Iowa ties.

Marc Wenger, 46, was found dead at his home in Harvest, Ala. earlier this week. The death was being

investigated as a homicide, according to the Huntsville (Ala.) Times. Investigators at the Madison

County, Ala. Sheriffʼs Office were not immediately available to comment on the investigation.

“It was such a shock,” said Patricia Wenger, of Masonville, Wengerʼs aunt. She heard about the death

earlier this week from a relative.

Marc Wenger enjoyed cutting trees from a young age. “I donʼt think he was in school yet, when he

started cutting down trees with a toy saw,” said Wenger.

Wenger later started a tree service in Alabama. His aunt said she last saw her nephew in 2004 when he

came up to visit from Harvest, a town of about 3,000 people. He had started Wenger Tree Service

there. The windy weather in Alabama provided work opportunities for Marc Wenger, his aunt said.

Even after an injury significantly affected his body, he continued to work hard in his business, said

Patricia Wenger. “Oh, heʼd work and work and work,” she said.

A funeral service was being planned for next week in Manchester, at the Bohenkamp-Murdoch Funeral

Home, 925 W. Main St.

Heat advisory on Wednesday

Posted July 13, 2010 9:03 pm by Christopher Pratt/SourceMedia Group News

Update with link at 9:12 p.m. — You can visit KCRG for local weather coverage.

CEDAR RAPIDS — The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for almost half the state

on Wednesday, which means that hot temperatures and high humidity are expected. Many parts of

eastern Iowa, including Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Davenport and Fort Madison will be under the advisory

until 9 p.m.

The NWS recommends people drink plenty of water, stay in air-conditioned rooms, and check on

neighbors during the heat wave. The elderly are especially susceptible to heat-related illnesses. During

the advisory temperatures could exceed the 90 degree mark, and heat index readings between 100-110

are likely. If heat index readings reach 110 conditions become life-threatening, according to the weather

service.

For more information visit this National Weather Service site.

New Buchanan County Jail opens doors to public

Posted July 10, 2010 11:14 pm by Christopher Pratt/SourceMedia Group News

Update: Photos and link to raw video added 11:14 p.m. on Saturday, July 10.

INDEPENDENCE – The public had a chance to walk through the new Buchanan County Jail on

Saturday afternoon.

About 300 people toured the structure. The building, which will house inmates and also be a workspace

for law enforcement staff, was financed by a $4.5 million bond passed in 2007. The new jail was built

onto the south side of the countyʼs courthouse. Sheriff Bill Wolfgram said it was a necessary investment

for the county.

“Itʼs a jail…this is not something that anybody wanted to spend money on,” said Wolfgram.

Wolfgram said the plan was to move all staff and inmates over to new facility in the next week.

The old facility often violated Iowa Department of Corrections standards. The previous jail subjected

staff and inmates to very hot conditions during the summer, for example. If the new jail hadnʼt been built,

Buchanan County might have had to pay other facilities for incarceration costs for years to come.

“We got 70 years out of our facility, which is good,” Wolfgram said of the old jail, which was built in 1939.

That jail was originally built to house only 10 inmates, he said. Over the years space was added to

accommodate more prisoners by renovating the county building. Last night the old jail had around 20

people in custody.

Wolfgram said the new facility could house around 50 inmates, and meets state standards.

The new building was also designed to be more secure. Contraband was passed from visitors to

prisoners at the old facility, said Wolfgram. In the new jail inmates will see their visitors through a video

screen. The jail also has three pods, where prisoners sleep and live.

Wolfgram said the new buildingʼs communications center and offices will allow his 12 deputies to be

more productive and relieve a lot of legwork, like moving inmates back and forth between jails.

Bringing inmates over to the courthouse was also made easier by the design of the new jail, said

Wolfgram. Now deputies can walk people directly into a courtroom and not have to pass through a busy

hallway.

Mary Kay Miller, of Independence, who toured the jail Saturday and participated in a “Jail and Bail”

fundraiser to benefit a local food bank on Friday, got a taste of life behind bars. Miler wore a red and
white jump suit and ate some of the apple sauce. “Itʼs not bad,” she said.

Incident at Hiawatha Convenience Store

Posted July 7, 2010 9:14 pm by Christopher Pratt/SourceMedia Group News

Updated at 9:14 p.m. by Christopher Pratt

HIAWATHA — A Cedar Rapids man has

been arrested after stealing money from a

Hiawatha convenience store Wednesday

afternoon, and the storeʼs owner says he

now feels unsafe in the small town.

Hiawatha police work the scene of a robbery at the
Quick Mart, 655 Robins Road in Hiawatha on Anthony Kyle , 18, of Cedar Rapids, was
Wednesday, July 7, 2010. The suspect broke into his
arrested just a few blocks away from Quick
girlfriend's mother's apartment after allegedly robbing
the convenience store. (Liz Martin/SourceMedia Group Mart, 655 Robins Road, where police say he
News)
carried out an armed robbery. A female clerk

was working alone at the store around 2:20

p.m. when a gunman entered the store. He demanded cash from the register and she handed it over to

him.

The man struck the clerk near her left ear with his gun prior to leaving the store. “He took all of the

money and then hit her. I donʼt know why,” said Kulvinder Singh, the owner of the store and husband of

the accosted woman.

“We are not safe around here,” said Singh.

The clerk, who did not want to be interviewed or identified, received care in an ambulance outside of the

store. Her injuries were not considered serious, said a relative.

Meanwhile, Kyle took refuge in an apartment building two blocks away from the store. Neighbors

gathered outside of a Pirie Drive building while law enforcement officials pursued Kyle. About two hours

after the robbery he was escorted out of the apartment. Authorities recovered the stolen money and also

found a handgun with Kyle in the apartment. He was arrested on first degree robbery charges.

Singh said a string of robberies has plagued the shop recently. “This is the fourth time in two months,”

he said.

“Three times we got robbed every other night,” said the store owner while standing in a back room just a

few feet away from the looted cash register. The chilling crime lasted about three minutes and it was

captured on a store surveillance camera. Singh said he wanted to share his story because it might help

prevent other crimes from happening. He said he wanted to be helpful to law enforcement as they

investigated.

Singh has been disturbed by the other robberies at his store, but nothing at all like the one on

Wednesday afternoon. He says heʼs built relationships with the community over the two years that heʼs

been doing business on Robins Road. Kids sometimes warm up in the store when the winter turns frigid,

says Singh. “Itʼs just a neighborhood store. Iʼm helping them, they are helping me.”

Singh says the recent spree of holdups is not something he anticipated in the city of about 6,500 people.
“Hiawatha is too small. I never thought there was any crime around here,” he said.

He said the person who robbed his store Wednesday afternoon had been a customer only a few hours

earlier in the day.

“I live three blocks from here. I donʼt know what to say. Itʼs scary to me,” said Singh.

No further information on the incident was immediately available from Hiawatha Police as of 9 p.m.

Wednesday.

Updated 6:30 p.m. with suspect info, prior criminal history.

An 18-year-old Cedar Rapids is accused of robbing a Hiawatha convenience store this afternoon.

Anthony D. Kyle, 18, of Cedar Rapids, faces a first-degree robbery charge after police say he robbed the

Quick Mart, 655 Robins Rd., at gunpoint.

Police were called to the Quick Mart on Robins Road in Hiawatha around 2:20 p.m. this afternoon.

Police say Kyle entered the store and demanded money. Kyle struck the clerk in the head with the

handgun after the clerk handed over money from the register, police said.

Police found Kyle as well as the money and gun at a nearby apartment on Pire Drive.

A man identifying himself as the uncle of the woman working inside the convenience store says she was

unharmed and that no one else was inside the store at the time of the incident. He says the suspect

came into the store and put a gun to her head, demanded cash and then took it.

Another witness says her daughterʼs boyfriend is the man who robbed the store. She says her

daughter was arrested last night and that the suspect was reportedly trying to rob the store to get bail

money to get her out of jail.

Kyle was cited by Cedar Rapids Police for driving on a suspended license and minor traffic violations at

5 a.m. Wednesday morning at the intersection of O Ave. NE and Center Point Rd. NE, records show.

At the time of his arrest Wednesday, Kyle was on pretrial supervision for a pending harassment case in

Cedar County. Kyle is accused of harassment of a public officer from an incident June 4, online court

records show.

Kyle was adjudicated in juvenile court in Johnson County on a first-degree robbery charge in July 2009,

online court records show. He and another man were accused of robbing a woman with a BB gun in the

parking lot of the Coralville Perkins just before midnight on January 1, 2007, records show.

Kyle had other legal run-ins as a juvenile, court records show. He was adjudicated on charges of

unauthorized use of credit cards for a 2005 incident in Linn County, second-degree theft and

interference with official acts for a 2008 incident in Johnson County, online court records show.

Fire on Oxford’s Main Street

Posted July 2, 2010 3:29 am by Christopher Pratt/SourceMedia Group News

OXFORD — A gas grill was the source of a fire that ravaged a home in Oxford last night, said Fire Chief

Al Thomas.

Nobody was injured. However, two dogs were taken to a veterinary hospital for treatment. Thomas said

one woman lived in the home, 213 E. Main St. A neighbor helped her escape before firefighters arrived,

said Thomas. The victim was being assisted by the American Red Cross.

Someone passing by the house called firefighters around 9 p.m. Soon five area departments arrived to

battle the blaze. It started in the kitchen and climbed higher and higher. ” It just got up into the rafters up

there and we had a heck of a time getting them out,” said Thomas.

Many people gathered along Main Street to watch. “I was sitting inside of my house and heard a loud

pop,” said Lindsay Schulte, 22, a Main Street resident, who sat across from the scene.

“There was a huge, huge first pop and that was within seconds of the second pop,” she said.

For hours fire trucks and emergency vehicles lined the street. “This is a big deal,” added Schulte.

Oxfordʼs Fire Department was assisted by crews from Amana, Coralville, Tipton and North Liberty.

An investigation into the fire will continue, says Thomas.

Car vandalized with racial slur

Posted June 30, 2010 9:46 pm by Christopher Pratt/SourceMedia Group News

Update at 10:32 a.m. by Jeff Raasch

The owner of the car is a 44-year-old white male whose son attends Kennedy, according to Cedar

Rapids police Sgt. Cristy Hamblin.

Hamblin said the son has black friends, but they are unsure why their car was targeted.

No arrests have been made.

Initial post:

CEDAR RAPIDS — A studentʼs car had a racial slur and a swastika painted on it Wednesday in a high

school parking lot, a harrassment report was filed with Police by the student and an investigation

continued, said Sgt. Jeremy Paulsen.

Police were called to the south parking lot of Kennedy High School on Wednesday around 7 p.m. and

found a red vehicle parked in the middle row plastered with a Swastika and racial epithet. White paint

was washed from the vehicle about an hour after the call. Police had no suspects but said a school

surveillance camera may reveal evidence that could help find those who were responsible.

Kennedy Principal Mary Wilcynski was called to the school as a basketball tournament was going on in

the gymnasium. She said the incident was hurtful and harmful but urged caution from the media.

“It can be kids being stupid and itʼs as simple as that. And as hurtful and harmful as it can be itʼs kids just

not thinking and being stupid,” said Wilcynski.

This is an ongoing story and will be updated.

Cedar Rapids soldier died at Fort Hood

Posted June 24, 2010 9:34 pm by Christopher Pratt/SourceMedia Group News

An Army soldier from northeast Iowa died last week at Fort Hood, Texas.

Sgt. Benjamin Daniel Chadwick, 28, of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, June 17, at the military post

located about 160 miles south of Dallas, according to an Army news release.

The circumstances surrounding the death were still being investigated by the military.

Chadwick was the father of three children, two girls and one boy. He and his wife, Kristall, were

expecting another child.

Kristall Chadwick, of Cedar Rapids, said the couple was married in the summer of 2001. They were

about two months away from their ninth wedding anniversary, August 20.

Chadwick said that her husband graduated from Xavier High School in 2000 and joined the Army in

2001. After his initial enlistment he was forced out in 2004, she said. Army officials at Fort Hood were

contacted for comment, but could not immediately be reached.

Chadwick also said that her husband attended some classes at Kirkwood Community College.

“My husband got in, got out, and got back in,” Chadwick said.

He joined as a fire support specialist in 2005. In October 2007 he was deployed to Korea for a year, his

wife said. He was never sent to Iraq or Afghanistan, she said.

Chadwick received an Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraqi Campaign

Medal and two service ribbons from the military. Despite the stress of military life, the work provided

good benefits to the young man who had had some difficulty finding work of comparable pay, said

Kristall Chadwick.

A vigil service is set for this coming Sunday at the Teahen Funeral Home, from 3 to 6 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made in Chadwickʼs memory to Carl Darnell Hospital, Attn: The Fisher

House, 111 Rockville Pike Suite 420, Rockville, MD 20850-5168, according to an obituary set to be

published in The Gazette.

ATKINS – An upstairs fire left a significant amount of damage to one room, and left one family to depend

on friends and neighbors for a place to sleep on Tuesday night.

Atkins firefighters, with the support of some surrounding area fire departments responded to the house

fire at 7251 30th Ave. around 9:30 p.m., said Fire Chief Gary Lange.

there was a lot of smoke damage to the room and that no one was sleeping in the house overnight.

“Thereʼs plenty of friends and neighbors that are offering a lot of help,” said Wirtz.

Photos from Iowa City Pride 2010 Parade

Posted June 19, 2010 9:22 pm by Christopher Pratt/SourceMedia Group News

Updated at 9:22 p.m. by Christopher Pratt

IOWA CITY — Around 1,000 people attended a parade and celebration of the gay community today in

Iowa City, said Kirsten Plowman, Chair of the Iowa City Pride Committee.

Since the early 1980s, the event, which happens on the third Saturday of June each year, has been an

important part of gay life in Iowa City, Plowman said.

The event is an opportunity for gays, lesbians, transgender and straight people to reflect on past

struggles and discuss current political issues. It also celebrates community, and starts with a parade that

marches through Iowa City.

“I like a good party. In the long run that has something to do with it.” said Plowman, 28, of Iowa City, who

grew up in Illinois. She and her organization put the event together by inviting vendors and community

groups. The 1969 Stonewall riot in New York City has been seen as the start of the gay rights movement

and pride festivals across the country have been a way for the community to organize politically for

years.

Last year the Iowa Supreme Court said the Iowa Constitution allows men and women equal marriage

rights.

This was seen as a watershed moment by many gay and civil rights supporters in Iowa and across the

country. Plowman said that as the culture has changed, so has the mood of the Pride event. “Itʼs

become less of a protest and more of a celebration.”

The outdoor mall was busy with activity on Saturday. A Christian missionary from Virginia talked to two

men with their shirts off. He had crossed the event by chance on his journey across the country. The

Lambda Legal Foundation passed out literature to raise awareness about the beating of a gay man in

Atlanta. One local business sold some rainbow snow cones.

State Sen. Bob Dvorsky (D-Coralville) brought up the issue of gay marriage in the current political

climate.

“So once again the choice is simple, if you want to continue and not have discrimination in the Iowa

Constitution elect Democrats. If you donʼt elect someone else,” said Dvorsky.

For one North Liberty couple deciding whether or not to get married in Iowa has been a difficult choice.

Lolita Blaha, 45, and, Lisa Harbit, 45, faced it last year. The couple applied for a Johnson County
marriage license but decided against getting married because if they did their employer provided health

insurance could be compromised, Harbit said.

“You have to make sure you explore those things, if those things are important to you,” she said.

Late spring storms come through eastern Iowa

Posted June 18, 2010 11:03 pm by Christopher Pratt/SourceMedia Group News

CEDAR RAPIDS — The rains came down in the early morning hours, and persisted in intense batches

of lightning and rain throughout the day. In Cedar Rapids many streets were impossible to navigate

during the evening barrage. Over the course of about 90 minutes, starting at 7 p.m. an inch and a half of

rain fell near the city center.

The late spring storm hit Anamosa particularly hard. Public Works director Larry Driscoll said the

department and Anamosa firefighters removed 10 trees from the cityʼs streets before sundown. Driscoll

said that on a typical day only five people worked for the streets department, but yesterday they had

about 15 people doing work to get things cleaned up across town.

Four trees fell on North Williams Street. And, last night the street was busy with people helping those

affected by the storms. A blue spruce crashed on Jennifer Barnesʼs house and a Chinese elm was

uprooted in her yard. Her father-in-law , brother-in-law and nephews were helping chop up the trees and

repair other damage. Barnes kept her humor through the storm, “Nothing you can do about it. Just made

plans for my weekend here,” she said.

As the thunder crashed near Marion one trained storm spotter noticed something that caught his

attention. “It had a really good shelf cloud,” said Travis Clark-Smith, 30, of Cedar Rapids, who said he

was trained by the National Weather Service to spot severe weather.

Clark-Smith said his cityʼs streets were pretty devastated by the rush of water, particularly at Wenig

Road and 42nd Street NW. “It just looked like a lake in that intersection.”

Will it rain tomorrow
