Learning Styles

Visual, applied, spatial, social, and pragmatic constitute my types of learning styles.

Visual: Visual learners process information by seeing it in print or other visual modes including
film, picture or diagram.

Here are effective strategies I might use to help the visual ELL student in the classroom.
Provide pictures to support key content area vocabulary and concepts. Match vocabulary words
to definitions. Use graphic organizers. Support content area instruction with realia, and active
learning strategies. Use visuals and have student point to pictures with its meaning. Use labeling
and diagramming in illustrations. Reinforce learning by modeling the correct usage.

Applied: Applied learners prefer tasks that involve real objects and situations. Practical, real-life
learning situations are ideal for them.

Here are effective strategies I might use to help the applied ELL student in the classroom.
Provide graphic organizers with word banks. Focus on speech production. Discuss language
goals with the students. Model and demonstrate activities. Use gestures and body language. Use
multimedia aids to illustrate concepts. Use read-aloud and music with verbal chants. Reinforce
learning by modeling correct usage. Repeat and paraphrase to clarify the meaning.

Spatial: Spatial learners are able to visualize or "mentally see" how things work or how they are
positioned in space. Their strengths include drawing, assembling things, or repairing. They prefer
using images, pictures, colors, and maps to organize information and communicate with others.

Here are the strategies I might use to help the spatial ELL student in the classroom. Assist
in improving pronunciation by asking a student to repeat key vocabulary. Provide grammar
instruction. Demonstrate effective note-taking and provide a template. Provide reading and

writing skills. Reinforce learning by modeling the correct usage. Use multimedia aids to
illustrate concepts.

Social: Social learners prefer to work with classmates and instructors. They enjoy interaction
with others. They are sensitive to people's motivations, feelings or moods.

Here are effective strategies I might use to help the social ELL student in the classroom.
Provide work in pairs or small groups to discuss a problem. Encourage efforts to participate.
Provide opportunities for participation in reading and writing activities. Assist the student in
improving pronunciation by asking to repeat key academic vocabulary and phrases. Have student
take an advanced cooperative learning role (i.e. note-taker, reporter). Offer error correction on
academic work and an oral language. Use cooperative learning and scaffolding techniques.
Model a phrase and have the student repeat it and add modifications.

Pragmatic: Pragmatic learners are practical, logical and systematic. They seek order and are
comfortable following rules, and a set direction of a guide when completing a task. They focus
on reaching a goal.

Here are the effective strategies or methods I might use to help the pragmatic student in the
classroom. Provide grammar instruction. Emphasize new academic vocabulary, for example,
instruct the etymology or word family and model how to use it in a sentence. Introduce more
academic skills: brainstorming, prioritizing, categorization, summarizing, compare & contrast.
Focus on reading and writing skills. Model more advanced academic language structures such as
" I think”… “In my opinion…" Use cooperative learning and scaffolding techniques.
