Monster Truck Showdown

1. What is another term for negative acceleration and provide

an example of it in the article provided. Another term for negative
acceleration is deceleration. They used this term when the blue
truck stops moving.
2. Which (object) in the article provided has a greater rate of
acceleration as compared to the other (object)? Provide evidence to
support your answer.
The second truck had a greater rate of acceleration than the
first truck because it had a much greater speed during a larger
time period, but would travel a longer distance. The first truck
moved at 2 miles per minute for 5 minutes, traveling 10 miles,
while the second truck moved at 10 miles per minute for 10
minutes, traveling 100 miles.
5mi/min-0mi/min 10mi/min-0mi/mn
-------------------- = 1mi/mi2 ------------------=1mi/min2
5min 10min

3. What term and/or phrase did the writer use in the article to
imply that a(n) (object) is at rest, as in it’s not moving. The writer
used the term “comes to a halt” to imply that the truck is not
moving.
4. What two pieces of information did the writer include in
the article that are irrelevant and/or misleading to the reader, as in
they are not useful in calculating either speed or acceleration. The
writer included the trucks’ colors and the ramp that each truck
started on as irrelevant pieces of information.

1. What is another term for negative acceleration and provide

an example of it in the article provided. Another term for negative
acceleration is deceleration, and this was shown in the article
when Liza flips the water bottle and it slows down from 1.5
meters per second to 1 meter per second.
2. Which (object) in the article provided has a greater rate of
acceleration as compared to the other (object)? Provide evidence to
support your answer.
Spencer’s water bottle has a greater rate of acceleration than
Liza’s, because Liza’s water bottle decreases in speed after hitting the
ceiling, while Spencer’s water bottle maintains the same velocity when
flipped.
2m/sec-0m/sec 1.5m/s- 1 m/s
------------------=1m/s2 -----------------------=0.25/s2
2sec 2sec

3. What term and/or phrase did the writer use in the article to
imply that a(n) (object) is at rest, as in it’s not moving. The writer
used the phrase “lands on its cap” to show that the water bottle
was at rest, or not moving.
4. What two pieces of information did the writer include in
the article that are irrelevant and/or misleading to the reader, as in
they are not useful in calculating either speed or acceleration.
The writer includes the competitors’ ages( 16 and 14), the
masses of the water bottles used(45 grams and 40 grams), and the
location( Boston Ma), which are not needed to understand the
problem. It also mentions the brands of water bottles that are
used( poland spring, aquafina) which is unnecessary.
