they felt proud about in the course of

the last few months.
Their inspirations ranged from
something extraordinary a woman had
done on her own (Dipa Karmakar’s
Olympic win, for instance), to
something a collective of women had
banded together to do (like the anti-
Trump women’s protest march).
But the most heartening thing about
the story was just the collated spirit of
it all. An entire group of women that
lived totally different lives, and came
from fairly disparate schools of
thought had one thing in common—
they were proud of other women.
They were legitimately emboldened
by what these women had managed to
accomplish, and were happy to say as
much on a public forum.
This story matters for two reasons.
The first, of course, is that there are all
these amazing women across the
globe (and right here, at home) that
are game-changers, and they deserve
to be lauded. But the second, and this
is the one I hope you take home, is
that other women are championing
their success.
According to a study in Psychology
Today, women tend to be more
aggressive towards other women,
because they have increased sensitivity
to social exclusion—which leads them
to automatically try and exclude other
females. It’s actually something I’d
spoken about myself a few dozen
letters ago.

But, after seeing women come forth
with so much ardour, and being so pro
other women, I think that change is at
a burgeoning stage. And it’s important
to help that change fully and
completely happen. As women, it’s on
us. We need to choose to champion
and applaud each other. It could be as
simple as talking about a female actor
doing a phenomenal job in a film,
Instagramming an amazing meal
made for you by a female chef (and
crediting her, naturally) or posting
about a friend’s accomplishments on
your Facebook. It isn’t all earth-
shattering stuff, but it has a major
impact.
Let’s face it, we all work pretty damn
hard to try and make a difference, but
it’s never becoming to toot your own
horn. So why not put together a five-
piece orchestra for other woman
you’ve always admired? Trust me, it
makes for much better music.

many have an expiration
date, usually stamped
on the bottom of the
container or on the box.

...is how Disha Patani describes her young self. At 24,
the freshest face in Bollywood wants a life that’s full of
surprises and a fair bit of privacy.

 F irst things first: you’ve
been pronouncing Disha
Patani’s name wrong. It’s
not Pa-taa-nee. It’s Paat-nee. But,
she’s made her peace with it. “I
don’t even bother anymore... It’s
such a struggle for me to speak to
people, let alone correct them for
mispronouncing my name,” she
tells us. And in the first five
minutes of the interview, Disha
solidifies one very important fact
about herself: “I’m a complete
introvert. I was very, very shy as a
kid, but I’ve gotten slightly better
over time,” she tells us. That’s not
the only thing she had to work on.

While she might have had
difficult teenage years (who
hasn’t?), Disha’s Bollywood
trajectory seems more effortless.
In a short span of time, this
24-year-old has built an impressive
resume—working with the likes of
Jackie Chan and Sushant Singh
Rajput. However, the path she’d
imagined for herself included a
white lab coat and minimum
human interaction. “I wanted to be
a scientist. I come from a family of
academics and being an actor was
something I hadn’t imagined in my
wildest dreams,” she laughs. But
other were waiting to happen. “I
was studying in Lucknow and my
friends (yes, I had made some by
then!) entered me in a Pantaloons
contest, the finale for which was

happening in Mumbai. By some
stroke of luck, I won and signed a
contract with them. While in the city,
I started giving auditions every time I
got a little time in between shooting
for Pantaloons’ campaigns,” she says.
Soon, Disha’s face was flashing on
television, for big brands like
Cadbury, Gionee, and Garnier
among others. “I started enjoying
being in front of the camera, and of
course, my independence. I actively
started seeking work and auditioned
for everything, and that’s how I
landed the part in M.S. Dhoni: The
Untold Story.”
As we get to know Disha better, we
also have the shoot in progress. Being
shot in the sun-drenched, hipster
hangout Colva Beach in Goa (where
Disha looks absolutely stunning in
the season’s most coveted swimsuits),
the next question is an obvious one—
what’s the secret to her bangin‘
body? “I work extremely hard to look
like this. I try to work out every single
day, doing a mix of cardio and weight
training. I also love to dance, so that
also helps shed those kilos faster.
And, I’m very careful about what I
put into my body.” Does that mean
there are no cheat days? “Of course,
there are! Cheat day is the only day I
can eat properly. And man, you
should see my plate...you can’t even
imagine how much I can eat. But
other than that, I stick to my regime
like a good girl.” Disha is less exacting
when it comes to her skin. “I stick to
a fairly simple routine—I only
cleanse and moisturise, and stay away
from using too many things on my
face. That, coupled with a good diet
and exercise, gives me clear, glowy
skin.”
Circling back to her life as an actor,
Disha tells us that she did try
completing her studies through
distance-learning while juggling her
career, but she wasn’t able to. “I
don’t regret it, but I would have felt
more accomplished had I finished
college.” But an actor is not all she
wants to be in life. “I want to do a lot

of things, and I’d like to speak about
them once I start working on them.
Right now, I’m having a blast being
an actor!” The one thing Disha
refrains from doing, however, is
planning ahead. “Life has thrown so
many surprises at me, and things
have always worked out well...so why
plan? At least this way, there’s a
mystery factor to what’s going to
happen next,” she declares.
Things worked out well indeed. In
her first two films, Disha has acted
alongside some of the biggest names
in the industry, and it’s impossible to
not sit up and take notice. However,
being the new kid on the block, was
she ever jittery while working with
the biggies, we want to know?

so chilled out and friendly. I had a

Yoga (with Jackie Chan) was like a
dream come true for me,” she quips.
Disha confesses that she was star-
struck by him, which may or may not
have made Jackie a tad
uncomfortable. “I used to have a
perpetual smile on my face while
working with him, and Jackie used to
ask me ‘Are you insane? This is an
action scene, why are you smiling?’.
But the entire experience was so
surreal,” she chuckles.
Despite all the on-screen exposure,
off of it, Disha still struggles with the
idea of a public life. “I’m terrible in
crowds,” she confesses. “I still feel
very nervous around people. I guess
I’ll never really change as a person.”
And then there’s the subject of
scrutiny, the side-order that comes

with being famous. Disha handles
that by simply not being seen as
often. “I’m still getting used to this
life. And I don’t go out as much—I
either go to the gym or for my
classes, or I’m at home watching
dance videos on YouTube.”
But the one space where she feels
completely at home is on social
media. And Disha is big on social
media. No, seriously, the 4.8 million
of you who follow her on Instagram
will agree. And she doesn’t just do it
because it’s an important factor in
building your ‘brand’, she genuinely
loves it. “I feel like your fans have the
right to know you. You get so much
love and adulation from people, and
it’s nice to share your life with them.”
But, hold on, here comes another fun

day it’s you, and then people find
something or someone else.” A
thoughtful pause later, Disha has an
amendment to make. “Photographs
aren’t the same as your career. My
work really affects me, so if people
said something about that, then I’d be
really depressed.” n

t seemed only fitting to revel in the happy
start of the season by toasting a glass
of champers and starting a conversation
on style. So we decided to gather a select
smattering of style connoisseurs to get a sneak
preview of Longchamp’s SS17 collection,
which was rife with their power motif for the
season in the Roseau Sakura bags (starring the
gorgeous, creeping Japanese cherry blossom),
and a full, fresh palette of pastels (think
delicious raspberries, mints and ceruleans). Kanika Jain
