Due: Friday, December 15, 2017 at 10:59 pm

Assignment Directions:

The leader of the group will create a Google Doc and share it with the other members of the group.

The group will complete the outline of the steps listed below on the group's Google Doc in the timeframe provided
—

#1 on day 1

#s 2-6 on day 2

1. Scenario w/ Citations for Criteria #s 1-5

Kia and Koore were participating in the Ultimate Snowboarding Competition. Even
though they were friends, they were feeling really competitive. At first, Kia and
Koore waited in line to do 1080º twist on their snowboards. Koore didn’t do too
good, while Kia won first place, so Koore felt like taking revenge. The next part of the
competition was the halfpipe and the race down the slope. It took them 15 minutes 5
to get up the mountain. When they both started their competition, Kia snowboarded
down the halfpipe at 8 m/s where her speed decreased 1 until she lost gravity and
was frozen in time 3 , for a split second as she was doing the twist on her snowboard.
As she landed on the ground, her speed was 5 m/s. After 20 seconds, Kia’s speed was
15 m/s 2 . Koore had started from 2 m/s but now he was acceleration over a time of
10 seconds a distance of 80 meters 2,4 . The length of the entire slope was 200 meters
5
. Halfway down, Koore was feeling even more upset because he missed his turn to
go on the halfpipe. Koore decided to sabotage Kia by running over her with his
snowboard. Since, Koore is so bad at snowboarding he ended up falling on his face
and breaking his back, while Kia won first place.

3. Questions for the Readers:

1. What is another term for acceleration when it’s negative, and provide an example of this from the article.
2. Which (object) in the article has a greater rate of acceleration as compared to the other (object)? Provide
evidence to support your answer.
3. What term and/ or phrase does the writer use in the article to imply that (an object) is at rest, as in it is not
moving?
4. What two pieces of information does the writer include in the article that are irrelevant, as in they do not

provide information to solve for speed or acceleration?

4. Image to Accompany Text in Newspaper Article

5. Screenshot of the Newspaper Article

Notes:

-You may use the Newspaper Article Template to create the newspaper article or another newspaper generator
tool that allows an image to be uploaded.

-The Newspaper Article should include the following:

-The scenario without citations

-The image to accompany the text

-The Questions for the Readers

6. Answer Key for the Questions for the Readers:

Note: Answers to the questions should be typed in bold under each question.

1. What is another term for acceleration when it’s negative, and provide an example of this from the article.
Deceleration. To show deceleration, we said that Kia was going at 8 m/s and then her speed decreased.
Since her speed was decreasing, she was decelerating.

2. Which person in the article has a greater rate of acceleration as compared to the other person? Provide
evidence to support your answer. Koore has greater rate of acceleration than Kia. Koore’s initial speed
was 2 m/s and his final speed is 80 meters over 10 seconds equals 8 m/s. His total time 10 seconds.
Therefore his speed of acceleration is 8 m/s - 2 m/s over 10 s equals 0.6 m/s2. Kia’s speed of acceleration
is 15 m/s - 5 m/s over 20 s equals 0.2 m/s2.

3. What term and/ or phrase does the writer use in the article to imply that (an object) is at rest, as in it is not
moving? To show that Kia was at rest, we said that she lost gravity and was frozen in time.

4. What two pieces of information does the writer include in the article that are irrelevant, as in they do not
provide information to solve for speed or acceleration? Two irrelevant pieces of information are that the
length of the slope was 200 meters and that it took Kia and Koore 15 minutes to get to the top of the
mountain.
