Scratch Notes - Food Inc

❖ Thoughts On Title - Type of company, food company where they can show how they
make food and what they do to make the food we eat. Primary goal is to make
money. Talks about the Food Country. Where are food is made/processed.
❖ Food industry has been changed false images being shown not true
❖ No seasons for tomatoes,ripened with methane gas
❖ No bones in meat , interesting how the industry doesn't want us to know putting a vale in
front of us
❖ Farm vs Factory​ - Should our food come from farms of factories? Does is come from
factories and farms?
❖ Food becoming more dangerous things hidden from us
❖ MNC​ - multinational Corporation, has many locations around the world
❖ Keep thought on pros and cons of MNC
❖ Examples of MNC - Nike Adidas Coke, Pepsi
❖ Mcdonald brothers brought factory system to the back of restaurant
❖ Factory largest investor in tomatoes potatoes lettuce etc.
❖ System​ - uses mechanics and makes work easier but you don’t get to learn that skill.

❖ Tyson​ biggest meat packing company
❖ “These chickens never see sunlight”
❖ Vince offered to show the chicken house
❖ He changed his mind because of Tyson the company
❖ Only one allowed them to film their chicken house
❖ Chicken houses are unsanitary
❖ Many chickens can’t survive because they develop so quickly and don’t develop
muscles which affects the way they walk
❖ Antibiotics are put in the feed and many die, the antibiotics pass through the
chicken.
❖ Workers that catch the chicken they are immigrants
❖ Farmers in Fraser Valley didn’t treat the chickens properly
❖ 200-300 thousand dollars for poultry house
❖ Companies have farmers under their thumb
❖ Farmers need a loan and are in debt they feel like they are slaves to the company
❖ A typical grower borrows $500,000
❖ There is no diversity in a store
❖ Corn has conquered the world
❖ Today growing 200 bushel today
❖ In the United States 30% of land is used to grow corn

❖ Government allows they to over produce for a less cost


❖ Farmers in the U.S are given discount to grow extra corn
❖ Government forces them to grow corn
❖ Big companies want a lot of corn
❖ More corn because they want it for their live stocks
❖ Engineering food not good for you
❖ They don't go bad quickly
❖ Fructose is made from corn
❖ Things that come from corn - ketchup, batteries, diapers, meat, fast food, coke, syrup,
peanut butter
❖ Farmers feed corn to cows because it is cheap
❖ Average american eat 200 pounds of meat a year
❖ Corn has made meat cheaper
❖ Cafo- Concentrated Animal Feed Operations
❖ Feed corn to animal that doesn't eat corn is because affects them
❖ Corn fed cows tend to develop bad bacteria in their gut
❖ Cows are stuck in one spot standing in their waste so if one is sick then all of them are
sick
❖ Recalls always happen because the meat wasn’t treated

❖ E coli is caused when the cows eat corn and to get rid of it they can feed them grass but
they will look for another technological way to solve it
❖ Hamburger filler if cleaned out with a chemical called ammonia to get rid of e coli
❖ Unhealthy food is cheaper, healthier food is expensive but it is way better for you
❖ Things like coke is cheap because those are unhealthy calories
❖ The biggest predictor of obesity is income level
❖ Families that don’t make enough money they don’t really seem to have a choice to afford
healthy food
❖ 1 in 3 americans born after 2000 will be affected by diabetes
❖ Factor chickens go through chlorine and ammonia

❖ Largest slaughterhouse in the world is in a depressed community because there is poverty

❖ Cuts that happen affect the meat because of the infection in the skin
❖ Meat packing is the dangerous job
❖ Ibp brought people from Mexico to work for them
❖ Corn being produced by NAFTA
❖ Workers are being arrested not the people hiring them

❖ Stonyfield was acquired by Groupe Danone a $23 billion food conglomerate ( is like a
blob)
❖ Organic - when there are less chemicals used to grow something and is more natural

From Seed To Supermarket


❖ Patent means to pay if you want to make the same product
❖ Monsanto created DDT and Agent Orange chemical used in vietnam war to burn
vegetation made poison
❖ Roundup - ready soybeans
❖ In 1996 when monsanto began selling Roundup Ready soybeans pn 2% of soybeans in
the U.S. contained their parented gene
❖ Soybeans sprayed with chemicals and GMO soybeans are created
❖ By 2008 over 90% of soybeans in the US. contained monsanto’s patented gene.
❖ 1990 seed saving became illegal corporations did this because they want to sell their own
seeds
❖ Monsanto made a law for farmers to make it illegal to keep their own seeds
❖ Monsanto has 75 devoting investigators
❖ Only 6 seed cleaning machines let in Indiana
❖ All have been put out of business
❖ David doesn’t plant monsanto crops but his fields have been contaminated by GMO
seeds
❖ If Monsanto finds contamination the farmer must prove that they did not violate
Monsanto's patents.
❖ A Blacklist - is a list of no good, a list of people that did bad things
❖ Settlement - agreeing to pay the fine,
❖ In the public eye the settlement would say that the person is guilty
❖ Soy milk can be made with Monsanto soy beans

The Veil
❖ Want to pass law so that everything GMO is labelled
❖ People who don’t ant GMO labels say that it would create unnecessary fear
❖ The Legislature passed it and the Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed the bill
❖ 70% of food has some type of ingredient that is GMO
❖ Oprah was sued by meat industry for saying something about their beef
❖ Aren’t allowed to take photos of kafos
❖ Monsanto had possession of Moe’s personal information

Shocks
❖ Things that are better for you are better but are expensive and some people can't afford
them
❖ Buy food that is in season and organic
❖ Make sure your farmers market has food stamps

My Thoughts On The Documentary


1. List the different forms of leadership you saw in the movie?
The form of leadership that I saw was the mother of the child who stood up and tried to get the
attention of others to be aware of problems that can be caused by eating food that you don’t know what is
inside of it.

2. Techniques - title animations. List any techniques that you found interesting that
was used in the documentary?

3. What content was proactive in the documentary?


❖ The chicken houses
❖ The way they treated the chickens

4. Overall thought on the documentary as a whole? Was it worth watching?


Overall this documentary was very good. I would give it a ⅘ because even though it was kinda
provocative it really opened my eyes on what type of food I eat and made me think about what they put in
it before it is sent to the store for people to buy.
