1. CBA Pro Overview

CBA Pro software is a powerful application that provides connectivity with CBA 1000 or CBA
2000 instrument for Circuit Breaker analysis.
The software performs various tasks, such as:
 Download of test plans defined on CBA 1000 or CBA 2000
 Download of results (waveforms, transducers and micro-Ohmmeter measures) stored on
CBA 1000 and/or CBA 2000 local memory
 Display of channels waveforms
 Calculation on data received from CBA 1000 or CBA 2000
 Comparison of different curves on the same graph

It also controls the instrument to:

 Upload a test plan defined by CBA Pro software
 Save or Upload the calibration values

This program runs under Windows© 2000 or later operative systems.

Revision 6.4.4 incorporates the following new features.

 Added the tolerance, and the Pass-Fail message, on de-bounce duration and transducer
speed.
 Added the possibility to create any test sequence (which is impossible on the test set in
stand-by mode). This can be useful for the CBA type testing. The sequence can be
interrupted with messages instructing the operator about physical interventions.
 Test reports can be now grouped in a single page, one phase at a time.
 Also the measurements list can be grouped, one per phase.
 Added in a window where the user can define up to 10 labels of the fields that can be printed
in the result report. The values of each custom field can be set and then saved inside the test-
plan file and the result file (table Breaker Parameter) in the Test Header panel -> Parameters
tab -> Custom Fields button.
 Results window: added five new buttons.

 Decrease Graph Height

 Increase Graph Height
 Overlap Coil Currents Graphs
 Overlap Travel Transducers Graphs
 Overlap all graphs.

Revision 6.5.0 incorporates the feature of importing data with a different format (CBT 400).

Revision 7.0.4 allows performing the first trip test with three phase currents.

 The background color of the graph;
 The default color used to draw Analog Channels;
 The default color used to draw Digital MAIN Channels;
 The default color used to draw Digital AUX Channels;
 The color to draw the X axis;
 The color to draw the Y Axis;
 The color of T1 cursor;
 The color of T2 cursor;
 The decimal digit to display in the X axis;
 The decimal digit to display in the Y axis;
 The thickness of Main digital channels when they are in the “Close” status;
 The thickness of Main digital channels when they are in the “Resistance” status;
 The thickness of Aux digital channels when they are in the “Close” status.

To modify a color property you have to click in the color box to the right of the property and the
following color dialog window will appear.

24
DOC. MSE10166 REV. 7.0.4 Page 25/92

At this point is sufficient to click on the wished color and press the OK button, and you will see that
the color in the box at the right of the edited property is changed and it‟s the same you have chosen
in the color dialog.

The last three options are used as default when a result file is downloaded from the test set (only if
none Graph Template is defined, see later for further details). Then, they are stored separately inside
the result file saved on the PC.

 Graphs Height: changes the vertical size of the Currents and Transducers graphs: from x1
(minimum, default) to x15 (maximum).
 Overlap Coils Currents diagrams: if checked, the diagrams of the Close and Open Coils are
overlapped (and the Y-axis minimum and maximum are re-calculated).
 Overlap Transducers Graphs: if checked, these graphs are overlapped (and the Y minimum
and maximum are re-calculated).
 Overlap All Graphs: if checked, all analog channels graphs are overlapped (and the Y-axis
minimum and maximum are re-calculated)

25
DOC. MSE10166 REV. 7.0.4 Page 26/92

The change in the Chart Options tab has effect in the Result windows which will be opened after
configuration editing but not for the Result windows already opened. Moreover the colors of digital
and analog tracks are considered only when you open a comtrade file or when you download a
result, because they don‟t have any color property; instead when you open a *.cba file already saved
the colors of each channel are saved in the file, and will be reproduced as recorded.

C) Custom Fields

In this window the user can define up to 10 labels of the fields that can be printed in the result
report. The values of each custom field can be set, and then saved inside the test-plan file and the
result file (table Breaker Parameter), when you are creating a new test plan, and you are in the Test
Header panel -> Parameters tab -> Custom Fields button.

26
DOC. MSE10166 REV. 7.0.4 Page 27/92

The user can change the label and can insert the corresponding value. These strings are
automatically copied to the result file when downloaded from the test set.

3. Test Plan (For CBA 1000 instrument)

Basically a “Test Plan” is a program that a CBA 1000 instrument has to follow to execute a certain
test. You can create a test plan directly with a CBA instrument or also with the CBA Pro software.
Moreover the CBA Pro software allows you to download or to delete the test plans stored on the
CBA memory.
Even if you choose to create a test plan entirely with CBA Pro or to download a test plan from the
CBA 1000 memory to modify it, the system will open the “Test Plan” window.

A Test Plan is composed by:

 A Test Header
 The Trigger Options
 The Test Options
 The Recording Options
 The Breaker Settings
 The Auxiliary Channels Settings
 The Coil Settings
 The Analog Input Settings
 The Micro-Ohmmeter Options
 The Pass/Fail Settings

To navigate between these parts you have to use the treeview control at the left of the test plan

38
DOC. MSE10166 REV. 7.0.4 Page 39/92

window; by select each node in the treeview you‟ll be able to set the different parts of the test plan
in the right panel on the window.
Now let‟s see in details all these parts of a test plan.

3.1 Test Header

This selection can be seen by choosing the top node of the treeview.

The test header is composed by two parts:

 The first part, called “Header”, is the main body of the header and it describes the test
executed with the test plan itself
 The second part, called “Parameters”, is used to describe the breaker on which the test plan
will be applied

3.1.1 HEADER

The Header is composed by the following parameters:

 Plant Name, is the name of the substation where the breaker is installed
 Feeder, is the name of the line where the breaker is installed
 Breaker Model, it‟s the model of the breaker to test
 Breaker S/N, it‟s the serial number of the breaker to test

39
DOC. MSE10166 REV. 7.0.4 Page 40/92

 Operator, it‟s the name of the person who has made the test
 Date, in case of downloading of pending result or test plan, or when you create a new test
plan by PC, this field shows the current date, instead in case of downloading or opening of
saved file this field show the file saving date.
Following fields are visible when the test plan is downloaded from the instrument:
 PicJ10 fw Version, it‟s the version of the PicJ10 firmware
 Pic16F fw Version, it‟s the version of the Pic16F firmware
 Firmware Version, it‟s the version of CBA 1000 firmware
 Format Version, it‟s the version of the test plan format
 Version BSG Option, if present it is the version of the firmware of the BSG Option

All these fields are automatically filled only when you download a result from a CBA instrument,
while when you download a test plan file they remain blank, because the header is applied only to
result files. Moreover the fields Plant Name, Feeder, Breaker Serial Number are used for the
“Automatic Import” procedure in TDMS.

3.1.2 PARAMETERS

The “Parameters” part of the test header is used to describe in detail the breaker to test. All the
fields are not mandatory and you can let them blank.

At the bottom, for older CB‟s, it is possible to specify the serial number of the different phases, and
the number of operations performed.

40
DOC. MSE10166 REV. 7.0.4 Page 41/92

3.2 Trigger Options

In this panel you can set the trigger options; as you see there are several trigger types:
 Coil Current
 Internal Trigger
 Coil Command Reset
 Analog Input on 500V
 External Trigger on SLAVE input
 Auxiliary Input

3.2.1 COIL CURRENT

By select “Coil Current” it means that the trigger will start when the coil current arrives at a
certain specified percentage of the range; you are able to set this percentage in the frame that the
software will show when you decide to use a Coil Current trigger, as shown above.

In this frame you can set the trigger current percentage and at the same time you can see the Open
and Close currents ranges and the preview of the trigger currents. Depending on the type of test
(paragraph 3.3 Test Options) the reference current will be the one of the close coil or that of the first
open coil.

3.2.2 INTERNAL TRIGGER

By select “Internal Trigger” it means that the trigger will start the first time the coil is
excitated.

41
DOC. MSE10166 REV. 7.0.4 Page 42/92

3.2.3 COIL COMMAND RESET

By select “Coil Command Reset” it means that the trigger will start the first time that the
coil current returns to its normal value after an excitation.

3.2.4 ANALOG INPUT

By select “Analog Input” it means that the trigger will start when the voltage at the 500 V
input is greater than or less than the value set in the frame shown above, which appears each time
you select the Analog Input trigger. Here it is also possible to set the input range (5V, 50V o 500V).
ATTENTION: this value of input range will be kept identical to the one set in the “Analog Input
Settings”.

3.2.5 EXTERNAL TRIGGER ON SLAVE INPUT

By select “External Trigger on SLAVE Input” it means that the trigger will start when the
external input connected to CBA 1000 goes from a high status to a low status.

3.2.6 AUXILIARY INPUT

Selecting “Auxiliary Input” the following frame appears at the bottom of the Trigger
Options panel.

42
DOC. MSE10166 REV. 7.0.4 Page 43/92

In this frame you can drive the trigger starting with the auxiliary input. To determinate the trigger
condition you have to enable the inputs which will make the trigger to start; at this point you have
to choose the trigger status of each enabled channel (NC, NO or Edge) and specify if all the
conditions are to be verified or only one of them to start the trigger. For example, we enable aux
input 1 and 2. For aux input 1 we choose “NO”, that is “normally open”, while for aux input 2 we
choose “Edge”, that is any change of the aux input 2 status. If as “Trigger Mode” we choose “Match
of All” the trigger will start when aux input 1 goes from the “open” status to the “close” status and
the aux input 2 changes its status, regardless of its starting condition. If we choose “Match of One”,
instead, the trigger will start when one of the conditions specified will be true.

3.3 Test Options

In this page you can choose which kind of operation you want to do; you‟re able to choose among:
. Open: if the test set has the four-coils options, you can select also the phase or the phases to open;
. Close: always on all phases;
. Open-Close : if the test set has the four-coils options, you can select the phase or the phases to
open, but also whether to repeat the tests. For this purpose, this frame is shown:

By selecting Test Repetitions it is possible to define the number of repetitions and the Time interval
between tests.
. Close-Open : has the same features as the Open-Close type of test.
. Open-Close-Open: just an operation.

. Sequence. Once selected, the following window is opened.

43
DOC. MSE10166 REV. 7.0.4 Page 44/92

When connected to the instrument, the user can program sequences to send to the instrument. For
each operation it is possible to program:
 The operation to be performed: as you press, the following list is available.

To add a test, press Add: you will see it displayed on the list to the right.
 Among the standard operations, you find also Message to operator. If you select it, the
window says:

Pressing the button, the Notes page is opened.

You may input the message you desire, and then press OK. Then, press Add: the operation
is added to the right.

44
DOC. MSE10166 REV. 7.0.4 Page 45/92

 You can input the delay with respect to the next operation; in the first test it is zero.
 You can program also the Open – Close coil duration.
The following is an example of an Open – Close, with a message in between.

If you press Start, the first operation message is sent to CBA. Then, the program waits for
the test result, before proceeding with test 2. If there is a message, the program displays it to
the operator, and does not continue the sequence until OK is pressed.
 Add allows adding a new test after the selected row.
 Save saves the sequence into the temporary memory.
 deletes the selected row.
 Shift up shifts the selected line up by one position.
 Shift down shifts the selected line down by one position.

When you save the test result in TDMS you have one result (one row) containing more than one
test.

. Enable Minimum Trip Coil. This feature is disabled if the instrument is connected and the
hardware option is not installed. The selection allows performing the threshold test of the MTC; that
is, we can measure the actual auxiliary DC voltage at which the CB is opened.

When selecting it, a frame appears in order to select the MTC parameters:

In this frame you must input the nominal DC battery voltage and the voltage threshold (in
percentage, from 10% to 95%, or as the absolute value of the nominal DC battery voltage).

45
DOC. MSE10166 REV. 7.0.4 Page 46/92

3.4 Recording Options

In the “Recording Options” you can set the following fields:

 Open Coil Duration, indicates the time (in milliseconds) for the duration of the open coil
excitation
 Close Coil Duration, indicates the time (in milliseconds) for the duration of the close coil
excitation
 Open to Close Delay, indicates the delay time (in milliseconds) between the open and the
close operations
 Close to Open Delay, indicates the delay time (in milliseconds) between the close and the
open operations
 Pretrigger Duration, indicates the maximum duration of the pretrigger (in milliseconds)
 Sample Frequency, indicate the Sample Frequency (in Hz) for the recording
 Recording Duration, indicates the total recording duration (in milliseconds), including the
pretrigger duration

You also can decide to break the recording in two parts and to do this you have to check the field
“Two Recordings”. At this time the field “Recording Duration” will be hidden and the following
fields will appear:

 First Duration, indicates the duration (in milliseconds) of the first half of the recording
 Second Duration, indicates the duration (in milliseconds) of the second half of the recording
 Dead Time, indicates the dead time (in milliseconds) between the first and the second half of
the recording.

46
DOC. MSE10166 REV. 7.0.4 Page 47/92

3.5 Breaker Contacts Settings

In the “Breaker Contacts Settings” there is the frame “Breaker Contacts” where you can set the
following fields:
 Contacts Monitoring, you can specify to monitor only the A1 contact, the A1-B1-C1
contacts or all the contacts
 Resistor Range, here you can enable or disable the resistance verify on digital contacts

When the BSG Option is plugged on the instrument this frame will change appearance in order to
select the relative BSG settings:

The Close Contact Threshold must be set, and optionally the Graphite Contact Threshold. If the
Graphite Contact Threshold is selected, the value must be at least 50 greater than the Close
Contact Threshold.
If the BSG Option is present it is also not possible to choose Two Recordings as Recording
Options, and the total recording duration (Pre-trigger + Duration) must be lower than 1s.

47
DOC. MSE10166 REV. 7.0.4 Page 48/92

3.6 Auxiliary Contact Settings

In the “Auxiliary Inputs 1-2” and “Auxiliary Inputs 3-4” frames you can enable the monitoring of
each auxiliary input, assign them a label and determine if they works in “dry” or “wet” modality.

3.7 Coils Settings

In this panel you can choose the current range for the CBA 1000 close and open coils.

3.8 Analog Input Settings

In this frame it is possible to enable or disable the analog channel and decide which kind of analog
input will be tested.
As “analog channel” you can select between four choices:

48
DOC. MSE10166 REV. 7.0.4 Page 49/92

 Analog Input
 Travel Transducer
 Pressure Transducer
 Current Clamp

By pressing the Settings button it is possible to define the setting for the selected Analog Channel

3.8.1 ANALOG INPUT

The analog input is a generic input measured in Volts which is connected to CBA 1000. You can
assign to the channel a label and you have to specify the range of the input voltage.
If you check the option “Full Wave” the instrument will be able to record both negative and positive
value of the analog input.
ATTENTION: if the option “Analog input on 500V input” of the Test Option page is selected (see

49
DOC. MSE10166 REV. 7.0.4 Page 50/92

paragraph 3.2) the value set as input range will be identical.

3.8.2 TRAVEL TRANSDUCER

In the travel transducer panel you can assign a label, that will be displayed in the graph legend of
the result window, and the information about the phase of the transducer.
You have to set several parameters to execute a test with a travel transducer. First of all you have to
choose the transducer input (500V or 5V). 500V choice means that you‟ll use the input labelled
“Transducer/Analog Input” of the CBA 1000 instrument; 5V choice means that you‟ll use the
“MICRO OHM METER” input of the CBA 1000 instrument.
Then you have to define the nominal breaker stroke with its unit of measure.

Then you have to set some parameters for the transducer related to the breaker: first of all if the
transducer rotates select degree as unit of measure; otherwise if the transducer moves linearly,
select mm or inch as unit of measure. Next, you must define to total transducer stroke and the
breaker stroke, in order to build a relation between the transducer‟s position and the close and open
positions of the breaker (you can define it in absolute value or in percentage value). For a more
detailed explanation, please refer to the application guide of CBA 1000 (MIE11166-CBA 1000
APPLICATION GUIDE.pdf document).

The instrument provides a 5V internal generator that can be used to supply the travel transducer. If
the travel transducer is supplied by an external generator, you must uncheck the option “Use
auxiliary 5V internal generator for travel transducer” and insert the value of the external voltage
generator.

50
DOC. MSE10166 REV. 7.0.4 Page 51/92

You can also enable Datum Points, that are two points, „A‟ and „B‟, that will be drawn on the travel
transducer‟s graph. The instrument will calculate breaker close and/or open speed (it depends on the
type of test selected) exactly between these two points. If you check this option, please insert the
value of point „A‟ and „B‟ on Close to Open transition and/or Open to Close transition, and select
the option that determines the difference between point „A‟ and point „B‟.

Distance Offset means that the point „B‟ will be traced exactly after the millimeters inserted with
respect to point „A‟. Time Offset means that the point „B‟ will be traced exactly after the
milliseconds with inserted respect to the point „A‟.
The position of the point „A‟ can be defined by selecting following option:

If you click the button , a window opens: this window shows detailed figures that can help you
to understand datum points.
These points are shown on the travel transducer graph: if the kind of test is open or close the
program will drawn only two datum points. If the test is open-close or close-open the program will
drawn four datum points. Finally if the test is open-close-open the program will drawn six datum
points.

Finally it‟s possible to calibrate the transducer clicking the button “Calibrate Transducer” (enabled
if the instrument is connected). The program will navigate among the instrument menu until it
reaches the calibration section. If the breaker is in the open position the “Transducer Open Position
Reference” field will be compiled. If the breaker is in the close position then “Transducer Close

Position Reference” field will be compiled. Clicking the button “Start” the instrument
will open or close the breaker. All the calibration fields will be compiled as shown in the following
picture:

51
DOC. MSE10166 REV. 7.0.4 Page 52/92

If the transducer stroke error is less than 10% the message “Calibration completed” will be shown.
Otherwise the message “Warning! Transducer Stroke Error > 10%” will be shown.
NOTE: if the user modifies a data regarding the breaker or the transducer, all calibration value will
be reset.
To finish calibration‟s operation, click the button “Exit from Calibration”.

When you finally click the “Ok” button all calibration data are saved in Test Plan file.
The button “Reset Travel Transducer Calibration” is enabled when the instrument is in calibration
menu. If you click this button, calibration data are all reset.

3.8.3 PRESSURE TRANSDUCER

As long as for the travel transducer also for the pressure transducer you can assign a label and you
must select the analog input used. Here you have also to specify the pressure corresponding to 0 V,
the relative unit of measure (Bar or lb/in²), and the relation between voltage and pressure.

52
DOC. MSE10166 REV. 7.0.4 Page 53/92

3.8.4 CURRENT CLAMP

First of all for the current clamp you can assign a label and select the analog input used.
Then it‟s mandatory to set the relationship between the voltage and the current and to set the max
current available.
If you check the option “Full Wave” the instrument will be able to record both negative and positive
value of the analog input.

4. Test Plan (For CBA 2000 instrument)

Basically a “Test Plan” is a program that a CBA 2000 instrument has to follow to execute a certain
test. You can create a test plan directly with a CBA instrument or also with the CBA Pro software.
Moreover the CBA Pro allows you to download or to delete the test plans stored on the CBA
memory.
Even if you choose to create a test plan entirely with CBA Pro or to download a test plan from the
CBA 2000 memory to modify it, the system will open the “Test Plan” window.

A Test Plan is composed by:

 A Test Header
 The Trigger Options
 The Test Options
 The Recording Options
 The Breaker Settings
 The Auxiliary Channels Settings
 The Coil Settings
 The Analog Channel Settings
 The Micro-Ohmmeter Options
 The Pass/Fail Settings

To navigate between these parts you have to use the treeview control at the left of the test plan
window; by select each node in the treeview you‟ll be able to set the different parts of the test
plan in the right panel on the window.
Now let‟s see in details all these parts of a test plan.

4.1 Test Header

This selection can be seen by choosing the top node of the tree view.

54
DOC. MSE10166 REV. 7.0.4 Page 55/92

The test header is composed by two parts:

 The first part, called “Header”, is the main body of the header and it describes the test
executed with the test plan itself
 The second part, called “Parameters”, is used to describe the breaker on which the test plan
will be applied

4.1.2 HEADER

The Header is composed by the following parameters:

 Plant Name, is the name of the substation where the breaker is installed
 Feeder, is the name of the line where the breaker is installed
 Breaker Model, it‟s the model of the breaker to test
 Breaker S/N, it‟s the serial number of the breaker to test
 Operator, it‟s the name of the person who has made the test
 Date, in case of downloading of pending result or test plan, or when you create a new test
plan by PC, this field shows the current date, instead in case of downloading or opening of
saved file this field show the file saving date.
Following fields are visible when the test plan is downloaded from the instrument:

55
DOC. MSE10166 REV. 7.0.4 Page 56/92

 PicJ10 fw Version, it‟s the version of the PicJ10 firmware

 Pic16F fw Version, it‟s the version of the Pic16F firmware
 Firmware Version, it‟s the version of CBA 2000 firmware
 Format Version, it‟s the version of the test plan format
 Version BSG Option, if present it is the version of the firmware of the BSG Option

All these fields are automatically filled only when you download a result from a CBA instrument,
while when you download a test plan file they remain blank, because the header is applied only to
result files. Moreover the fields Plant Name, Feeder, Breaker Serial Number are used for the
“Automatic Import” procedure in TDMS.

4.1.2 PARAMETERS

The “Parameters” part of the test header is used only to describe in detail the breaker to test. All the
fields are not mandatory and you can let them blank.

56
DOC. MSE10166 REV. 7.0.4 Page 57/92

4.2 Trigger Options

In this panel you can set the trigger options; as you see there are several trigger types:
 Coil Current
 Internal Trigger
 Coil Command Reset
 Analog Input on 500V input
 External Trigger on SLAVE input
 Auxiliary Input

4.2.1 COIL CURRENT

By select “Coil Current” it means that the trigger will start when the coil current arrives at a
certain specified percentage of the range; you are able to set this percentage in the frame that the
software will show when you decide to use a Coil Current trigger, as shown above.

In this frame you can set the trigger current percentage and at the same time you can see the Open
and Close currents ranges and the preview of the trigger currents. Depending on the type of test
(paragraph 3.3 Test Options) the reference current will be the one of the close coil or that of the first
open coil.

4.2.2 INTERNAL TRIGGER

By select “Internal Trigger” it means that the trigger will start the first time the coil is
excitated.

57
DOC. MSE10166 REV. 7.0.4 Page 58/92

4.2.3 COIL COMMAND RESET

By select “Coil Command Reset” it means that the trigger will start the first time that the
coil current returns to zero.

4.2.4 ANALOG INPUT

By selecting “Analog Input on 500V input” it means that the trigger will start when the
voltage at the 500 V input is greater than or less than the value set in the frame shown above, which
appears each time you select the Analog Input trigger. For the CBA 2000 instrument it is also
possible to set the source input from which the test will be started. Once the input number is
selected it is possible to set the input range (5V, 50V o 500V). ATTENTION: this value of input
range will be kept identical to the one set in the “Analog Input Settings”.

4.2.5 EXTERNAL TRIGGER ON SLAVE INPUT

By select “External Trigger on SLAVE Input” it means that the trigger will start when the
external input connected to CBA 2000 goes from a high status to a low status.

4.2.6 AUXILIARY INPUT

Selecting “Auxiliary Input” the following frame appears at the bottom of the Trigger
Options panel.

58
DOC. MSE10166 REV. 7.0.4 Page 59/92

4.3 Test Options

In this page you can choose which kind of operation you want to do; you‟re able to choose among:
. Open: if the test set has the four-coils options, you can select also the phase or the phases to open;
. Close: always on all phases;

59
DOC. MSE10166 REV. 7.0.4 Page 60/92

60
DOC. MSE10166 REV. 7.0.4 Page 61/92

is added to the right.

In this frame you must define the nominal DC battery voltage and the voltage threshold (as
percentage from 10% to 95% or as absolute value of the nominal DC battery voltage).

61
DOC. MSE10166 REV. 7.0.4 Page 62/92

4.4 Recording Options

 Second Duration, indicates the duration (in milliseconds) of the second half of the
recording

62
DOC. MSE10166 REV. 7.0.4 Page 63/92

 Dead Time, indicates the dead time (in milliseconds) between the first and the second half
of the recording.

4.5 Breaker Contacts Settings

In the “Breaker Contacts Settings” there is the frame “Breaker Contacts” where you can set the
following fields:
 Contacts Monitoring, you can specify the option “One contact per breaker”, “Two contacts
per breaker”, “Four contacts per breaker” or “Six contacts per breaker”
 Resistor Range, here you can enable or disable the resistance verify on digital contacts

When the BSG Option is plugged on the instrument this frame will change appearance in order to
select the relative BSG settings:

The Close Contact Threshold must be set, and this is usually enough. If the CB has a Graphite
contact, the second threshold allows detecting it. In this case, the value must be at least 50
greater than the Close Contact Threshold.

If the BSG Option is present, it is also not possible to choose Two Recordings as Recording
Options, and the total recording duration (Pre-trigger + Duration) must be lower than 1s.

63
DOC. MSE10166 REV. 7.0.4 Page 64/92

4.6 Auxiliary Contact Settings

In this window it is possible to program the auxiliary INPUTs, and also the auxiliary OUTPUT
contact, which is available on CBA 2000 only.

The twelve auxiliary inputs are divided into three main pages.
In each frame it is possible to enable the monitoring of each auxiliary input, assign them a label and
determine if they work in “dry” or “wet” modality.

The auxiliary output can be enabled checking the tab; this performed, it is also possible to program
the activation delay, in seconds, with respect to test start.

4.7 Coils Settings

In this panel you can choose the current range for the CBA 2000 close and open coils.

64
DOC. MSE10166 REV. 7.0.4 Page 65/92

4.8 Analog Input Settings

In this frame it is possible to enable or disable the two analog channels and up to three other inputs
(transducers).
If an analog input is selected then it is possible to open the relative button “Settings”; now a
window opens to allow the setting of the parameters of the selected analog input.

The analog input is a generic input measured in Volts which is connected to CBA 2000. You can
assign to the channel a label and you have to specify the range of the input voltage. ATTENTION:
if the option “Analog input on 500V input” of the Test Option page is selected (see paragraph 3.2)
the value set as input range will be identical.
If you check the option "Full wave" the analog input of the instrument will record both negative and
positive voltage values.

By selecting the option “Current Clamp” it is possible to set the relationship between the voltage
and the current and to set the max current available (which obviously is related to the maximum
voltage selected)

65
DOC. MSE10166 REV. 7.0.4 Page 66/92

Regarding the other three inputs it is necessary to define whether they are Analog Travel
Transducers, Pressure Transducers, Digital Travel Transducers or Analog input.

4.8.1 ANALOG TRAVEL TRANSDUCER

First of all you can set a name for the channel which will be displayed on the graph legend of the
result window. By pressing the button “settings” a different window will open depending upon the
selected transducer type.

In case of Analog Travel transducer, the following settings window opens.

You have to set several parameters to execute a test with a travel transducer; first of all you have to
define the nominal breaker stroke with its unit of measure.

Then you have to set some parameters for the transducer related to the breaker: first of all if the
transducer rotates select degree as unit of measure; otherwise if the transducer moves linearly,

66
DOC. MSE10166 REV. 7.0.4 Page 67/92

select mm or inch as unit of measure. Then you must define to total transducer stroke and the actual
stroke corresponding to the breaker stroke in order to build a relation between the transducer‟s
position and the close and open positions of the breaker (you can define it in absolute value or in
percentage value). For a more detailed explanation, please refer to the application guide of CBA
2000 (MIE11168-CBA 2000 APPLICATION GUIDE.pdf document).

If the option “Different Actual Strokes” is checked then you can insert for each selected transducer
of different phases different value as actual stroke. Use radio buttons 1, 2 or 3 to choose different
travel transducers.

The instrument provides a 5V internal generator that can be used to supply the travel transducer. If
the travel transducer is supplied by an external generator, you must uncheck the option “Use
auxiliary 5V internal generator for travel transducer” and insert the value of the external voltage
generator.

You can also enable Datum Points, that are two points „A‟ and „B‟, that will be drawn on the travel
transducer‟s graph. The instrument will calculate breaker close and/or open speed (it depends on the
type of test selected) exactly between this two points. If you check this option, please insert the
value of point „A‟ and „B‟ on Close to Open transition and/or Open to Close transition, and select
the option that determines the difference between point „A‟ and point „B‟.

Distance Offset means that the point „B‟ will be traced exactly after the millimeters inserted respect
to the point „A‟. Time Offset means that the point „B‟ will be traced exactly after the milliseconds
inserted respect to the point „A‟.
The position of the point „A‟ can be defined by selecting following option:

If you click the button , a window opens: this window shows detailed figures that can help you
to understand datum points.
These points are shown on the travel transducer graph: if the kind of test is open or close the
program will draw only two datum points. If the test is open-close or close-open the program will
draw four datum points. Finally if the test is open-close-open the program will draw six datum
points.

Finally it‟s possible to calibrate the transducer clicking the button “Calibrate Transducer” (enabled
if the instrument is connected). The program will navigate among menu of the instrument until it
reaches the calibration one.

67
DOC. MSE10166 REV. 7.0.4 Page 68/92

picture:

If the transducer stroke error is less than 10% the message “Calibration completed” will be shown.
Otherwise the message “Warning! Transducer Stroke Error > 10%” will be shown.
When second and/or third transducer is enabled, calibration must be repeated also for these
transducers. Use option buttons “2” and “3” to select the transducer that must be calibrated.

4.8.2 PRESSURE TRANSDUCER

In case of Pressure transducer the following window opens.

If you select this transducer you can define the pressure value corresponding to the 0 V reference
value, with the unit of measure (Bar or lb/in²) of this pressure. Then you can define the linear law

68
DOC. MSE10166 REV. 7.0.4 Page 69/92

existing between the measured voltage value and the corresponding pressure value. Use option
button 1, 2 or 3 to choose different pressure transducer.

4.8.3 DIGITAL TRAVEL TRANSDUCER

If the user selects the “Digital Travel Transducer” setting, the following window will open:

First of all it is necessary to set the Nominal Breaker Stroke, and its unity of measure (mm or inch).
There are two transducer‟s parameters: the number of impulses per turn and the actual stroke of the
transducer with respect to the breaker‟s nominal stroke. In case the two strokes are different for
each phase, tick the setting “Different Actual Strokes” and use the options “2” and “3” to set the
transducers‟ parameters on the other phases.
If the instrument is connected, it is possible to “calibrate” the transducer by measuring the error in
degrees of the transducer stroke and therefore the error with respect to the nominal stroke given for
the breaker. To start the calibration, simply press the button “Calibrate Transducer”.

By pressing the “Start” button , the instrument will then drive the breaker to a close or to
an open and will measure the transducer‟s actual stroke. Then all calibration parameters will be set,
as in the following picture:

69
DOC. MSE10166 REV. 7.0.4 Page 70/92

NOTE: if the user modifies data regarding the breaker or the transducer, all calibration values will
be reset.
To finish the calibration operation, click the button “Exit from Calibration”.
When you finally click the “Ok” button, all calibration data are saved in the Test Plan file.
The button “Reset Travel Transducer Calibration” is enabled when the instrument is in calibration
menu. If you click this button, calibration data are all reset.

4.8.4 ANALOG INPUT

With this selection, the three 10 V inputs of the round connectors are made available to measure any
other voltage. In particular, this feature has been developed to allow the three-phase first trip test
and the power synchronization test.

When selected, the window becomes the following one.

These inputs are named Analog input 3, 4 and 5, because they can be used together with the 500 V
inputs, which are named Analog inputs 1 and 2. You have to check the input you want to use; after
this, the following window is displayed.

70
DOC. MSE10166 REV. 7.0.4 Page 71/92

You can:
 Label the input;
 Select the input range. The selection 1 V is the one to be used in conjunction with the clip-
on AC (or DC) transformer, which has the ratio of 0.1 V per $;
 Full wave is selected for AC signals, such as those coming from the clip-on AC transformer;
 Select the current clamp: by this selection, the result will be displayed in A rather than V;
 Maximum clam current: 10 A.

With OK, the first input is selected. If you want, proceed selecting the other two channels.

71
DOC. MSE10166 REV. 7.0.4 Page 72/92

5 Micro-Ohmmeter Test

In this panel you can choose to enable the microohmeter test, selecting to do a static or
dynamic resistance test.

If you select the Static Resistance Test, first of all you have to set the nominal test current (20, 100
or 200 A) and the resistance range (200 µΩ, 1 mΩ, 10 mΩ or 100 mΩ regarding the selected current
range). Also you have to set the test mode: Single Test, on Breaker Phase (if so you have to indicate
on which phase) or on Y2 Hybrid Breakers.

If you select Dynamic Resistance Test the instrument can measure the main resistance of the circuit
breaker during close or open operation. If you select this option the test type (see paragraph 3.3) can
only be open or close. If, for example, the breaker is open before the starting of the test, instrument
give close command; when the breaker closes, the current flows across the contact and the
instrument measures the resistance changes. Parameters to set for this type of test are the nominal
test current (20, 100 or 200 A) and the resistance range (200 µΩ, 1 mΩ, 10 mΩ or 100 mΩ
regarding the selected current range); then you can insert the nominal Open (or close) time and the
breaker phase on which the test must be performed.
In the results‟ graph the close or open coil current, the current injected across the main resistance,
the voltage measured and the calculated resistance will be shown.

7. Result
A “Result” is the output produced by CBA 1000 or CBA 2000 once it had executed a test plan.
There are basically two type of results: Graphical Result and Resistance Results.
The graphical result includes registration of breaker contacts, coil currents, analog channels,
dynamic resistance tests but also static resistance tests.
Instead the resistance result doesn‟t include any graphical representation of a registration; it is
composed only with resistance tests of Single Test type, Test on Phase type or both of them.
If you want to view a Graphical Result or a Comtrade file the CBA Pro will open the Graphic
Result Window, otherwise it will open the Resistance Result Window.

7.1 The Graphic Result Window

Cursors Graphics Properties

The Graphic Result Window is composed by three main areas:

 The Graphic Panel
 The Cursors Panel
 The Properties Panel

1) Digital Channels Graph: in this graph are shown all main and auxiliary digital channels.
2) Analog Channels Graphs: this graphs are the ones where are displayed the waveform of all
the kind of analog channels, i.e. Coil Currents, Transducer Output, Current Clamp, Dynamic
Resistance Values, etc.
3) Legend Area: at the right of the graphs you can find the legend which displays, for the digital
channels, the name of each channel, and for the analog channels the name of each channel and
also the values of the Y coordinates related with the cursors T1 and T2. Note that the box with
the legend of each analog channel always follows the last visible point of the related channel
so, when you zoom a result, you‟ll always find, at the right of the analog channel track, its
legend box.
4) Cursor T1: the X value of this cursor can be viewed in the Cursors Panel, while its Y value
changes for each analog channel and can be viewed in the legend box of each analog channel.
When you have a travel transducer result this cursor can be used, with the cursor T2, to
calculate dynamically the speed of the transducer between two points.
5) Cursor T2: the X value of this cursor can be viewed in the Cursors Panel, while its Y value
changes for each analog channel and can be viewed in the legend box of each analog channel.
When you have a travel transducer result this cursor can be used, with the cursor T1, to
calculate dynamically the speed of the transducer between two points.
6) Trigger Line: this dashed line shows the trigger time of the result

resized so that you‟ll be able to see the entire recording.

7.1.2 THE CURSORS PANEL

In the Cursors Panel you can find the time values related with the T1 and the T2 cursors and
also the time difference between that cursors. Each cursor label follows the movements of its own
cursor so you cannot mistake the cursors values.

7.1.3 THE RIGHT PART OF THE DISPLAY

On the right of the display, a number of tabs allows selecting many diagram and report
characteristics.

7.2 The Resistance Result Window

When you open or download a result which doesn‟t contain any digital or analog channel track the
Static Resistance Window will be opened instead of the Graphic one.
This window may be composed by up to four areas:
 The Single Tests area, which contains the values of single resistance tests;
 The Tests on Phases area, which contains the values of the resistances on predetermined
phases;
 The hybrid CB‟s test, which is made of two parts: to the left, are reported the test results of
series resistances; to the right, are reported the computed single resistances.
The columns of the Single Tests area are the following:
Id, is the number id of the test
Label, is a descriptive label of the test
Resistance, is the value of the calculated resistance (u.o.m. = mΩ)
Voltage, is the value of the voltage (u.o.m. = V)
Current, is the value of the current (u.o.m. = A)

The columns of the Tests on Phases area are the following:

current result in a cbt file.

7.4 Comparing Results

Starting from the version 4.1.1 of CBA Pro is available the result comparison feature.
The result comparison can be very useful, for example, when you want to compare two results made
from the same breaker but in different times.
Anyway to compare two results you have to consider that these results must be homogenous each
other; as “homogenous” it means that the results must match the following conditions:

1. the master and the comparing result cannot be a sequence

2. the type of the operation of the two results must be the same
3. the sampling frequency of the two results must be the same
4. the trigger time (if there‟s one) of the two results must be the same

If your results match with these conditions then you‟ll be able to compare them and you‟ll see
something like the following picture.

In this picture you can see the comparison of two Close tests made on the same breaker but in
different times.
As you can see the digital tracks are displayed on the same sub graph but the names of the digital
channels of the comparing result are comprised between asterisks.
The same thing happens for the names of the analog channels but their tracks are shown after the

91
DOC. MSE10166 REV. 7.0.4 Page 92/92

last analog track of the master result.

Regarding the measurements table, you can see the measures of the first result, as usual, at the top
of the table, while the measures of the second results are shown in green color after the measures of
the first results and separated from them by an empty row.
