Exercise A: Vector Algebra

Given the vectors: A = i + j, B = 2i + j – k, C = i – 3j

Do the following:

1. A+B 14. i×i

2. 2B – C 15. i×j
3. A+B–C 16. –k × j
4. |A|, |B| and |C| 17. k × –j
5. Unit vectors along A, B and C 18. A•B
6. |a|, |b| and |c| 19. A×B
7. Direction cosines of A 20. Angle between A and B
8. Direction cosines of B 21. Unit vector normal to A and B
9. The angle that A makes with the x axis 22. Unit vector normal to B and C
10. The angle that A makes with the y axis 23. A×B×C
11. i•i 24. A•B×C
12. i•j 25. What is the volume of the parallelepiped
13. –k • j with edges defined by vectors A, B, and C?
Exercise B: Cartesian coordinate system
1. Three points P1 (1, -2, 2), P2 (3, 1, 0) and P3 (5, 2 -2).
Obtain the following:
(a) the vector drawn from P1 to P2.
(b) the straight line distance from P2 to P3.
(c) the unit vector along the line from P1 to P3.

2. Given:
A=i+j B = 2i + j – k
(a) Plot A and B on the Cartesian coordinate system.
(b) Find RAB, the vector joining the points indicated by A and B.

Exercise B: Differential length, differential surface and unit normal vectors.

1. Find the expression for the differential length vector tangential to the curve:
x + y = 2, y = z2 at an arbitrary point on the curve and having the projection dz on the z- axis.

Obtain the differential length vectors tangential to the curve at the following points:
(a) (2, 0, 0)
(b) (1, 1, 1)
(c) (-2, 4, 2)

2. By considering two differential length vectors tangential to the surface x2 + y2 +2z2 = 4 at the point (1, 1, 1), find
the unit vector normal to the surface.
3. Consider the differential surface lying on the plane 2x + y =2 and having as its projection on the xz-plane the
rectangular differential surface of sides dx and dz in the x- and z- directions, respectively. Obtain the expression
for the vector dS associated with that surface.
