Answer all questions. Each question carries equal mark.

1 a A representative soil specimen collected from the field weighs 1.8 kN

and has a volume of 0.1 m3. The moisture content as determined in
the laboratory is 12.6%. Given that Gs = 2.71. Determine moist unit
weight and Dry unit weight?
b For the above data find Void ratio and porosity?
c Using the data given in question 1.(a) find the Degree of Saturation and
Saturated unit weight ?
2 a A laboratory consolidation test on a normally consolidated clay
showed the following results

Load ∆σ’ (kN/m2) Void ratio at the end of b
consolidation (e)
140 0.92
212 0.86 c
The specimen tested was 25.4 mm in thickness and drained on both
sides. The time required for the specimen to reach 50% consolidation 7 a
was 4.5 min.
A similar clay in the field 2.8 m thick and drained on both sides is
subjected to a similar increase in average effective pressure.
Determine Cc ? b
b The expected maximum primary consolidation settlement in the field?
c
c The length of time required for the total settlement in the field to
reach 40 mm ?
