A005 Every year, the Veterans of Foreign Wars sponsors a

resized nation-wide essay competition for middle-schoolers

known as Patriot’s Pen. Students enter through their local
VFW Posts and compete at the Post level. Post finalists
advance on to District and District winners advance to
State. State winners compete in the National VFW judg-
ing and $54,500 worth of prizes. This year’s theme was
“America’s Gift to My Generation.” The Tony K Burris
VFW Post 3608 received entries from Newcastle Middle
School, Bridge Creek Middle School, and students en-
rolled in home school programs. Post 3608 submitted
11 finalists to District 10 for judging.
Ripley Laws of Bridge Creek Middle School was awarded
1st Place at District 10, and Brooke Baker of Newcastle
Middle School was awarded 2nd Place.
VFW Post 3608 will be presenting the awards to the
winners of the Post judging on Tuesday, March 6th. Post
3608 winners are: 1st Place Kaizyn Kraft (Bridge Creek
MS), 2nd Place Cailin Busssum (Newcastle MS) and 3rd
Place Bella Millwee (Newcastle MS). The other finalists
that were sent on to District judging were: From Bridge
Creek – Saurani Mills, Ripley Laws, Cianna Rich; From
Newcastle – Brooke Baker, Jillian Whitten, Quentin
Schane, Ashlynn Donahoo; and from Epic Charter Schools
– Lilly Mae Babcock.
