Sheet 1: Programmable Logic Control

1. Draw the ladder rungs to represent:

a) Two switches are normally open and both have to be closed for a
motor to operate.
b) Either of two, normally open, switches have to be closed for a coil to
be energised and operate an actuator.
c) A motor is switched on by pressing a spring-return push button start
switch, and the motor remains on until another spring-return push
button stop switch is pressed.
d) A lamp is to be switched on if there is an input from sensor A or
sensor B.
e) A light is to come on if there is no input to a sensor.
f) A solenoid valve is to be activated if sensor A gives an input.

2. Draw a ladder diagram that is equivalent to the following digital logic

diagram

3. A ship’s engine must be capable of being stopped and started from both the
bridge (S1 and S3) and from the engine room (S2 and S4). The relay control
(contactor control) for this operation is shown in the figure below, where
contactor K1 connects the main power supply to the engine. Explain how the
control functions. Draw the logical diagram

4. Complete the following ladder logic diagram so that: the indicator lamp
energizes if and only if both switch A and switch B are simultaneously
actuated.

5. Complete the following ladder logic diagram so that: the indicator lamp
energizes if either switch A or switch B is actuated.

6. Draw the relay logic diagram for a circuit that operates as follows:

a) One motor and one pilot light are to be controlled in a control circuit.
b) Use two start pushbuttons and two stop pushbuttons. Pressing any one of
the start pushbuttons must turn on the motor. Pressing any one of the two
stop pushbuttons must stop the motor operation.
c) When the motor is running, the pilot light must be on.

7. Draw the relay logic diagram for a circuit that operates as follows:

a) In a motor control system, one master stop pushbutton (Stop_PB) is
available for stopping the operation at any time.
b) If the temperature switch (TSW) is closed, pressing the red pushbutton
(Red_PB) will turn on both motors one (M1) and two (M2).
c) If TSW is open, pressing Red_PB will only turn on M2.
d) If TSW is closed and the green pushbutton (Green_PB) is pressed once,
M1 will run.
e) Closing the temperature switch turns on the white pilot light.

8. Draw the relay logic diagram for a circuit that operates as follows:

a) A motor can operate in continuous run mode or in temporary run mode

also called jog mode. Therefore, in a motor control system, we need one
stop pushbutton and two run pushbuttons.

b) One pushbutton is for the continuous run mode of operation. The second
one is for the temporary run mode of operation.

c) The pushbutton for the continuous run mode of operation is labeled

“start.” The pushbutton for the temporary run mode of operation is
labeled “jog.” If we press the jog pushbutton, the motor will run as long
as we are pressing the jog pushbutton, which is equivalent to closing a
normally open switch.

d) If we press the start pushbutton, the motor will start running

continuously until we press the stop pushbutton. The red pilot light is on
whenever the motor is operating.
