The City of Buffalo is holding a competition

that challenges technologists to mine its
new Open Data Buffalo portal and build
solutions that address social and civic
issues.

The Civic Innovation Challenge is being

introduced today by Mayor Byron Brown
and AT&T, which is sponsoring the initiative.

The Open Data portal went live on Feb. 22

and is a free, public source of data the city
generates and collects. The inaugural
challenge will run from until April 22, after
which a panel of judges will review the apps
and select three finalists. Those finalists will
split a share of $8,000 in prizes.

The portal was created after Bloomberg

Philanthropies' What Works Cities initiative
selected Buffalo in 2016 in an effort to help
cities use their data for civic and municipal
uses.

Full information on the challenge and

registration forms are available here.
