1 I was brought up in a large family where my father’s youngest sister played an influential
role in my childhood. While my mother ran a home furnishing business, Aunt Ivy’s career
enabled her to spend time with me on weekends and during the holidays. She used to take
me downtown on shopping sprees, for supper and other leisure activities.
2 Aunt Ivy never married, so she literally treated me as her own child, lavishing me with 5
expensive things and paying for almost all my expenses. As I spent more time with her,
the gap between my mother and I unwittingly grew wider. I did not feel at ease when in
my mother’s presence.
3 However, circumstances changed when my aunt died of cancer when I was 15. Almost
immediately, I lost my pillar of support which left me rather confused. That was when my 10
mother finally had the chance to assume her parental role and care for me. She saw the
chance to communicate with me in a more personal way than before.
4 Our new bond had its glitches, especially since my aunt’s role in my life had made my
mother a virtual stranger to me. Aunt Ivy’s death affected the family deeply and that made
our relationship even harder to handle. Initially, communication between my mother and 15
me was minimal. She hardly took any notice of my personal needs. We got annoyed with
each other over the smallest things because we did not know what to expect of each other.
It was as though I did not know my own mother at all. The experience was both confusing
and terrifying.
5 At the age of 16, I learnt that I had a rare genetic disorder called neurofibromatosis 20
Type II which causes tumours to grow within my body. Two weeks after the diagnosis, I
was bedridden after an emergency surgery to remove several tumours in my spine.
6 My illness proved to be an opportunity for my mother and I to bridge the gap between
us. With Aunt Ivy gone, she was my only consolation after the agony of surgery. I can
still remember the very first time I confessed my innermost feelings as my mother sat 25
beside my bed and held my hands tightly. Tears rolled down our cheeks as we finally told
