JOY OF RECIPIENTS

Anna Smith
"I have been very fortunate as I received my sister's kidney when both mine failed. My sister,
Lindy, has been a wonderful source of support. The minute she knew that I needed a kidney
transplant, she offered one of her kidneys to me. I am indeed blessed."

Zain Razali
"Mr. Tan, a friend of my father's, paid for my studies when I went to secondary school and later
to the university. My father saved him from drowning when they were both younger and in
gratitude, he paid for my education. Today, I ama doctor; it is all because of Mr Tan.

Rani Sabesan
"My son was born with a learning disorder and it was Rita, a colleague at work, who taught him
from young to read and overcome this problem. It wasn't easy and Rita had to sacrifice a lot of
time and effort but it has paid off. Now, my son is in a regular school and I am so happy."

Lim Kim Hong

"During the terrible landslide that occurred in our housing estate, Encik Johari was the one who
pulled out my son from under the heavy concrete beam in time. Any delay and he would have
died. Encik Johari acted with no regard for his own safety. I am indeed fortunate to have him as
my neighbour."

Mrs Rozario
"I was all alone at home in the morning when two robbers broke into the house. I was in such a
state of panic. At that time the postman was on his rounds and he saw what was happening.
He actually dashed into the house, shouting and calling out to the others for help. The robbers
were surprised and they ran out after pushing the postman down. Luckily, other neighbours
heard the shouts and came to help. My postman is a hero!"

Section C : Reading Comprehension and Summary

[25 marks]
[Time suggested : 50 minutes]
Question 26 – 31
Read the passage and answer the questions that follow.

1 I was brought up in a large family where my father’s youngest sister played an influential
role in my childhood. While my mother ran a home furnishing business, Aunt Ivy’s career
enabled her to spend time with me on weekends and during the holidays. She used to take
me downtown on shopping sprees, for supper and other leisure activities.
2 Aunt Ivy never married, so she literally treated me as her own child, lavishing me with 5
expensive things and paying for almost all my expenses. As I spent more time with her,
the gap between my mother and I unwittingly grew wider. I did not feel at ease when in
my mother’s presence.
3 However, circumstances changed when my aunt died of cancer when I was 15. Almost
immediately, I lost my pillar of support which left me rather confused. That was when my 10
mother finally had the chance to assume her parental role and care for me. She saw the
chance to communicate with me in a more personal way than before.
4 Our new bond had its glitches, especially since my aunt’s role in my life had made my
mother a virtual stranger to me. Aunt Ivy’s death affected the family deeply and that made
our relationship even harder to handle. Initially, communication between my mother and 15
me was minimal. She hardly took any notice of my personal needs. We got annoyed with
each other over the smallest things because we did not know what to expect of each other.
It was as though I did not know my own mother at all. The experience was both confusing
and terrifying.
5 At the age of 16, I learnt that I had a rare genetic disorder called neurofibromatosis 20
Type II which causes tumours to grow within my body. Two weeks after the diagnosis, I
was bedridden after an emergency surgery to remove several tumours in my spine.
6 My illness proved to be an opportunity for my mother and I to bridge the gap between
us. With Aunt Ivy gone, she was my only consolation after the agony of surgery. I can
still remember the very first time I confessed my innermost feelings as my mother sat 25
beside my bed and held my hands tightly. Tears rolled down our cheeks as we finally told

each other what we thought and how we felt.

7 My mother’s heart was torn as she watched me endure the pain of a seven-inch wound
on my back. She did almost everything for me, including the very basic tasks that we
often take for granted. We were literally transported back to when I was a newborn who 30
depended on her for every need. I told my mother the things that I did not feel
comfortable sharing with her many years ago. I was bedridden for over three weeks, so
we had all the time to reconcile with each other – just the two of us within the walls of a
medical enclave.
8 I believe that everything happens for a reason, and that the diagnosis of my illness had
its pros and cons. In return for what I suffered under the surgical knife, God gave me my 35
mother’s unconditional love, which is exactly what I need most on this difficult journey. I
know now that I can face life’s challenges with my mother’s support, love and care. My
only regret is that I waited that long to discover my best friend.

32. Read the poem below and answer the questions that follow.

What Has Happened to Lulu?

What has happened to Lulu, mother?

What has happened to Lu?
There’s nothing in her bed but an old rag-doll
And by its side a shoe.

Why is her window wide, mother?

The curtain flapping free,
And only a circle on the dusty shelf
Where her money-box used to be?

Why do you turn your head, mother,

And why do the tear-drops fall?
And why do you crumple that note on the fire
And say it is nothing at all?

I woke to voices late last night,

I heard an engine roar
Why do you tell me the things I heard
Were a dream and nothing more?

I heard somebody cry, mother,

In anger or in pain,
But now I ask you why, mother,
You say it was a gust of rain.

Why do you wander about as though

You don’t know what to do?
What has happened to Lulu, mother?
