1) Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening.

In the beginning of our class I remember us talking about the film the Bicycle Thief and
actually watching a part of it. This is important because I feel that the relationship the
father and son had in The Bicycle Thief was similar to Salvatore and Albert. I believe this
because despite the hard times Salvatore is around Albert and is helping him cope with
many issues in his life; such as having no children, the cinema and even becoming blind.
In the Bicycle thief it seems that the son is holding on to his father’s sanity as well.
2) Find a related article and summarize the content.
In an article in the New York Times by Vincent Canby he says, “The film's tone is set by
his direction of Salvatore Cascio, who plays Toto as an 8-year-old. The handsome little
boy is a nonprofessional discovered by the director in Sicily, where the film was shot. At
the director's bidding, he gives an enthusiastic but awful miniature-adult performance, the
kind that one might have thought outmoded after the films of Francois Truffaut and
Steven Spielberg, among others.” I also found this quote interesting because this also
brings me back to the mention of neo-realism and how directors would find normal
people to play inspirational roles, and in the movie the little boy shows so much character
only having little to know experience. This helps me to believe that the craft of
film/entertainment can be found in anyone willing to learn and express themselves
through another platform.
3) Apply the article to the film screened in class.
I can apply the article to the screening in class because I do believe that the direction of
the film was made to show the rawness of that time and put an emphasis on films. There
were many times when we saw how each film affected a person; the priest, the children
even the man who ended up finding his wife. I think the director tried to make this movie
both humorous but relatable.
4) Write a critical analysis of the film, including your personal opinion, formed as a result of
the screening, class discussions, text material and the article.
I honestly enjoyed the movie for everything it was. I liked how I was able to see the
Bicycle Thief in order to have something to connect it to. I appreciate the relationship
Salvatore had with Alberto because it was a type of father and son friendship. We start
off seeing that Salvatore’s father is at war and even he doesn’t remember him but
throughout the movie Alberto gives him the knowledge he needs to cope with different
situations. At first when his mistress tells him that his mother called the disregards it, but
when he finds out Alberto died it brings him into form of sadness that he didn’t even feel
for his own father. I feel like the man message of the film was about relationships and
how something like the cinema could affect and change Salvatore into a wealthy,
inspiring person.
