Background

Although chronic kidney disease-induced anemia is more prevalent in

patients with diabetes mellitus (DM), anemia is a common finding prior
to manifestation of kidney disease

Objective : To determine degree of anemia as an independent predictor

of albuminuria or Creatinine clearance with type 2 DM.

Methods: Retrospective study cohort study assessing group of 10

African American pt with anemia prior to onset of nephropathy.

Albumin levels more than 30 mg in 24 hours = albuminuria

R/O transient albuminuria such as urinary tract infection, severe

hypertension; severe hyperglycemia, exercise, and acute fever

Sample collection: Gender, ethinicity, BMI range of obese to mod

obesity will be controlled

-Not controllable: diet, exercise habits; time of followup/intervention

-CrCl: using using Cockcroft-Gault equation:

ClCr (mL/min) = [(140 - age) × weight (kg)]/[serum creatinine (μmol/L)
× 72]

Results: Positive(?) correlation b/w degree of anemia at initial visit and

outcome in DM nephropathy
-earlier marker than microalbuminuria
