Chapter I

Introduction

A. Background of the Study.

Earth faces many problems that can cause our very own functioning ecosystem to malfunction

on its normal terms. The continual increase of the amount of solid waste being generated day by

day is causing a major problem on our planet natural-state making it suffer from our own doings.

Reducing and maintaining Solid and Hazardous waste must be our number one priority in order

to protect the environment from the widespread contamination.

Having a wealthy and rich country doesn't mean that it is not affected by the pollution we got

from our excessive waste disposal in open areas such as the public, ocean and etc. Like every

man, woman and child who live in the United States that are producing an average of 2.0

kilograms per day making the quantity of our waste increase as time goes by. Lessening the

amount of waste consumed must be a priority of every individual to avoid consequences it may

do in the future.

This waste problem may cause a widespread decease if it's not given a serious attention due to

the excessive dumping of trash illegally in areas such as the ocean and land spreading dangerous

bacteria to the open sea and land, waste that are hazardous could badly harm our environment

especially on those areas that having a hard time dealing with it. Everyone should take this

matter seriously in order to lessen the outcome it may cause on every living thing on earth

especially us humans.

1
B. Statement of the Problems.

This research entitled “Solid Waste on the Environment” will try to answer the following

questions:

 Where does waste come from?

 What are the different types of waste?

 What can be the long term effect of this problem?

 How different countries deal with this problem?

 What are the different ways of disposing waste?

C. Purpose of the Study.

This research on Solid Waste will help the students to be more educated about the problem

we’re facing on Waste Disposal and etc making them more interested on the aspect of Solid

Waste problem. The research will also help them understand more about the problem making

them think twice and have a better decision to make in the future.

And as for the parents, this will help them to also understand and make a move as early as

possible to help the environment to function on its normal terms. Like educating young children

as early as possible at home by teaching what is right and wrong thing to do.

D. Definition of Terms.

“For the purpose of clarification, the following used in the study have been defined” The

following terms are:

2
Ecosystem- A community of living organism interacting as a system

Excessive- More than is necessary or desirable, immoderate

Fetching- Pleasing, Attractive, Appealing, Captivating

Hazardous- Involving or exposing one to risk (as of loss or harm)

Malfunction- A failure to function in a normal or a satisfactory manner

Matter- An affair or situation under consideration, a topic

Profit- A financial gain, operating or producing something

Rotting- To undergo decomposition from the action of bacteria of fungi

Widespread- Found or distributed over a large area or a number of people

Main Body

This section of the research paper presents the answers to the research questions previously

stated in the chapter one.

A. The Origin of Waste.

In the study by Pichtel (2014), Solid waste can be loosely define as a solid material possessing

a negative economic value, which suggest that it is cheaper to discard than to use. But if the time

comes that technology evolved and different ideas pop up, waste might be something we can use

in the future.

Based on the study of Pearson Education. (2018). The waste problem that we're facing are

mainly happening because of the so called overproduction of goods. Overproduction is by far the

most common type of waste in an organization, and it can breed other wastes. Lastly the

continuous growth of the population may also be a big factor when it comes to the production of

solid waste materials.

B. Types of Waste.

Based on the study of Chandrappa and Das (2012). In developed countries waste are generally

carefully regulated and tracked through well developed record-keeping systems. But a

4
developing country may not have sufficient people and resources to carry out a detailed record

keeping .

According to Pichtel (2014). Every consumers, manufacturers, utilities, and industries generate

a wide spectrum of possessing drastically different chemical and physical properties. Waste vary

from 7 different types first is the Municipal waste followed by Hazardous, Industrial, Medical

Universal, Construction and Demolition, Radioactive, Mining and lastly Agricultural Waste.

C. The Long Term Effect of the Problem.

According to Green Choices (2018). Disposing of waste has huge environmental impacts and

can cause serious problems. Like in the UK much of their waste is buried on landfill sites or

holes on the ground, some waste will eventually rot, but not all, and in the process it may smell

and generate methane gas which is explosive and contribute to the greenhouse effect.

Musulin (2018) mentioned on her study that. Every waste created in this planet comes with a

price and as time passes by that price keeps on climbing, and that price that we're accounted for

has a massive effect on every individuals living on the planet, but thats not where it ends. It also

has a massive land, water, health, communities, and overall wellbeing.

D. The Solution of Different Countries.

Musulin (2018) states that every counties has a different way of combating this waste problem

we're facing like India with a population of 1.2 billion and still growing that produces a

whooping 62 metric tons of waste each year and their government saw an enormous potential for

this waste a 13 billion dollars industry by 2025 that made them decide to make a change by

5
expanding the country's solid waste management programs. And as for France their government

became the first country ban supermarket food waste and mandate large retailers to donate left-

overfood. And lastly the country of China one of the world fastest growing economy deal with

the solid waste problem by planning to build the largest waste to energy to facility, this plant is

intended to showcase a safe and effective way of generating electricity.

E. Different Ways of Disposing Waste.

According to a study of Compactor Management Company (2017). Industrialized nations are

grappling with the problem of expeditous and safe waste disposal . Non-biodegradable and toxic

wastes like radioactive remnants can potentially cause irreparable damage to the environment

and human health if not strategically disposed of. There are 6 different ways of disposing waste

first is by preventing or reducing waste generation because the extensive use of new or

unnecessary products is the root cause of unchecked waste formation. Recycling comes in

second it serve to transform the wastes into products of their own genre through industrial

processing. Paper, glass, aluminum, and plastics are commonly recycled. Third is the

Incineration that features combustion of wastes to transform them into base components, with the

generated heat being trapped for deriving energy. Assorted gases and inert ash are common by-

products. Fourth in line is the Composting that involves decomposition of organic wastes by

microbes by allowing the waste to stay accumulated in a pit for a long period of time. However,

the process is slow and consumes a significant amount of land. Biological reprocessing

tremendously improves the fertility of the soil. Fifth is the Sanitary Landfill that involves

dumping of waste into a landfill which is protected by a lining which serves as a barrier to

prevent contamination or prevent toxic chemical into the water zone. And last but not the least is

6
the disposal of waste in ocean or sea, Waste that are radio-active are normally dumped in the

oceans far from the human habitats. However this method is the most challenging and difficult

one because it is believe that it cause to deprived the ocean of its inherit nutrients.

Summary, Conclusion and Recommendation

This section of the research paper presents the summary, conclusion and recommendation of the

data gathered by the researcher.

A. Summary.

Earth faces many problems and one of the problems is the excessive waste pollution. This

problem is not that important back in the days that technology isn’t that developed as it is now.

But today due to the humans hunger to evolved on the aspect of technology bigger problems

arise and tons of waste is being disposed every single day on different parts the globe making it

even more dangerous as time passes by.

This problem also affects the sea, land and air because waste vary from hazardous and non-

hazardous chemicals like the nuclear waste that the powerhouses disposed on the land and the

ton of waste disposed on the open sea. And if this problem worsen it may dramatically affects

effects our lifestyle or in worse-case scenario we might see ourselves on the brink of extinction

B. Conclusion.

The problem that we face on waste pollution must be given a serious attention to prevent any

further complications. We must start changing ourself first to successfully start a movement or a

change involving on the waste problem because I believe that if we can’t change our habit of

throwing trash on any place as we please how we’ll be able to succeed on making a difference on

our environment and society.

8
Every problem has a solution but if the day has come that the mother earth can’t take it

anymore we might see ourself hanging on a cliff waiting in line to be extinction. So as long as

we have time to change for a better tomorrow and I think there’s no better time to start than now

as said by the legends “Why wait if we can do it now”

C .Recommendation.

They recommend this work of mine to those people who are interested on making a change for

a better tomorrow because as a student it is our mission to learn what is right and what is wrong

to be able to make a difference in this world full of problems and complications. Being an

Environmentalist is free and isn’t that hard if you think of it, planting trees, etc and caring for the

environment

This work will positively affect readers and may encourage them to be an environmentalist in

the near future which will help to make changes on the environment today. Like cleaning streets

by attending some programs offered by the baranggay and seminars manage by professionals to

educate people more about the pros and cons of taking care of the environment.
