AsIndiahasemergedstrongfromtherecession,thelastmonthoftheyear
continuedtopostanupwardtrendingrowth.TheIndianPrimeMinister's
economicpanelstatedthatthegrowthprojectionof6.5percentfor2009willbe
revisedupwardonthebackofthehighgrowthof7.9percentinthequarterofthe
fiscal.Overall,thelastquarteroftheyearthatwentby,witnessedgrowthin
manykeyareaspaintingagloriouspictureofIndia’srebound.Mineralproduction
inthelastquartergrewby8.25percent(asofOctober2009)whilethe
manufacturingsectorwitnessedgrowthforthefirsttimeinDecember(2009)
sinceOctober(2009)withactivityreachingitshighestsinceMay(2009)on
accountofthesharprisesintheinflowofworkandoutput.
TheotherareasthatwitnessedgrowthandconsequentlyshowcasedIndia’s
steadyrecovery,includedthegrowthinexports.Thecountry’sexportsgrewfor
thefirsttimein14monthsendingNovember2009.Overseasshipments
increasedby18.2percenttoUSD13.2billioninNovemberfromayearearlier
afterslidingtoanaverageof21percentpermonthsinceOctober2008.Onthe
otherhand,importsfellby2.6percenttoUSD22.8billioninNovember,resulting
inadecreaseintradedeficit.
Furthermore,expertspredictthat2010islikelytobemarkedbyapositive
domesticoutlookfuelledbycontinuedgrowthinkeyareas.ThePrimeMinister's
economicadviserC.Rangarajanstatedthattheeconomywillexpandby8
percentin2010-11supportedbyanexpectedimprovementinagriculturalinput.A

• Hospira enters into agreement to acquire Orchid Chemicals’
generic injectable business
Hospira,Inc.,aUS-basedglobalspecialtypharmaceuticalandmedication
deliverycompany,hasinkedanagreementwithOrchidChemicals&
PharmaceuticalsLimited,anIndianpharmaceuticalcompany,toacquirethe
latter’sgenericinjectablefinished-dosageformpharmaceuticalsbusiness.The
considerationforthesameisreportedtobearoundUSD400million.
TheacquisitionisexpectedtoinvolveOrchidChemicals’beta-lactumantibiotics
manufacturingcomplex,thepharmaceuticalresearchanddevelopmentfacility
atIrungattukottai,Chennaiaswellasthegenericinjectableproductportfolioand
pipeline.
Besidesthis,HospiraandOrchidChemicalshavealsoenteredintoanexclusive
agreementforthesupplyofactivepharmaceuticalingredients(API)byOrchid
Chemicalsfortheacquiredinjectablepharmaceuticalsbusiness.
Undertheagreement,IntasisexpectedtosponsorclinicaltrialsofAmarillo
technology base creation and a wide Biosciences’orallyadministeredinterferon-alphalozengeswhichareusedto
range of products. The country now combatinfluenzavirusessuchastheH1N1virus.AmarilloBiosciencesis
expectedtoreceivearoyaltyfromIntasPharmaonthenetsalesoncethe

AnilDhirubhaiAmbaniGroup(ADAG)’sReliancePowercommencedgeneration
fromits1200Mwcoal-basedRosapowerplantinShahjahanpurdistrictofUttar
radesh.Theproject(comprisingoftwostagesof600Mweach)commissioned
300Mwcapacityofthefirstphase(consistingoftwounits)fourmonthsbefore
schedule.Theentireplantisexpectedtobefullyoperationalbytheendofthe
EleventhPlanbyMarch2012.
Thecompanyhasenteredintoalong-termcontract,validfortheentireplantlife
of25years,withCentralCoalfieldLimited(CCL)inJharkhandforfuel.Further,
theflyashproducedattheplantistobeutilizedinacementunitrunbyADAG.
ThecompanyhasenteredintoaPurchasingPowerAgreementtosupplyentire
600MwoffirstphasetoUPPowerCorporationLimited(UPPCL)alongwithan
additional300Mwofthesecondphase.Thebalance300Mwisexpectedtobe
soldonamerchantbasistooutsideconsumers.
Theprojectisexpectedtostartcommercialoperationsinafewmonthsafter
thecompletionofthetrialrun.
Telecom
• MNP by March 2010
ThegovernmenthasannouncedthatitwillintroduceMobileNumberPortability
onMarch31,2010allacrossthecountry.Therehasbeenathreemonthdelayin
caseofthemetroswhereMNPwastobelaunchedbyDecember31,2009.
Thedelaywascausedbecausesomeoftheoperatorswerenotpreparedto
implementMNP,especiallythestate-ownedoperators,BSNLandMTNL.
AnotherreasonforthedelaywasthatTelecordia,whichowns74percentstake
inMNPInterconnection,oneofthecompaniesresponsibleforthe
implementationofMNPinIndia,issaidtohaveimplementedMNPinPakistan
aswell.ThisraisedsecurityconcernsfortheHomeMinistry.
