Methods of Teaching Language Skills

Aims & Objectives:


M.A. students of TEFL need to develop their five language skills (i.e., listening, speaking, reading,
writing, and grammaring) for they might start to teach one or all the aforementioned skills in their teaching
profession. As such, they are expected to know the theory and practice of ESL/EFL five language skills. In
this course, M.A. students of TEFL are expected to achieve the following objectives by the end of the
semester:

 A good command of the theory and practice of teaching listening


 A good command of the theory and practice of teaching speaking
 A good command of the theory and practice of teaching reading
 A good command of the theory and practice of teaching writing
 A good command of the theory and practice of teaching grammar
 A good command of the theory and practice of teaching lexicon
 A good command of the theory and practice of teaching pronunciation

Each session of absence will receive a -0.5 penalty score. More than 3 sessions of absence will result in
the dismissal of the absentee.

Plagiarism is a violation of academic honesty policy. It will not be tolerated in this class at all. An act
of plagiarism carries an automatic grade of -1 in this course!

Course Requirements:
 Active Participation & Lecture Presentation ……………… 20% (4 points)
 Term Paper ……………………………………………..….... 30% (6 points)
o Deadline: on your final day exam
 Final Exam ……………………………………………..….… 50% (10 points)

Note:
The following syllabus is tentative and subject to change.
Sporadic articles will be given to the students during the semester.
Please take the following into account for presenting your lectures:
Prepare a PowerPoint of the chapter(s) you are assigned to present.
Select the key ideas from the chapter(s), give a very brief summary of the main points
in your own language (while showing them on the screen), and prepare a few questions
for potential discussion.
The assumption is that everyone will read the chapter(s), so identify controversial or
confusing issues that can be discussed during class.
