Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Using headphones can be useful to the students as well as finding the same video in a different language. I
could also have the video on an iPad in the corner of the classroom where students can re-watch the video,
pause, and fast forward as much as they want.

Lesson idea implementation:

• Introduction (10 minutes)
Have students watch BrainPop video on Dr.Seuss
Read 10 Apples Up On Top! by Dr. Seuss
Advise students to note the concept of addition by noticing "1 more" when it is mentioned in the story.
• Explicit Instruction/Teacher Modeling (5 minutes)

Instructional Software
Place a lion on the SmartBoard.
Have students count along as you add an apple shape one at a time.
Label the apples from 1-10 as you go.
Call on students to help use the SmartBoard to drag apples over the lions head.
• Guided Practice/Interactive Modeling (5 minutes)
Have your students add by 1 with bingo chips or counters as you add by 1 as a group.
• Independent Working Time (10 minutes)
Tell your students you will be making a book. At this point you will either provide your students with the
template packet individually or work on a class book as a group.
Use the Bingo dabber or students' fingerprints from the ink pad to add the corresponding amount of "apples"
for each subsequent number.
If creating a class book, you may have the students follow along with their bingo chips or counters.
• Differentiation
Enrichment: For advanced students, they may be able to work independently or label the number on the page.
Support: For students who require support, you may use hand over hand assistance, pair them with a student
with a stronger grasp of the concept, or provide them with manipulatives to aid the addition process.
• Assessment (5 minutes)
You may have the students use small wooden blocks or counting cubes to count to ten, and then check them.
Review and Closing (10 minutes)
Read the class book or have the students share their books with partners or a group.

Reflective Practice:
I decided to use technology to introduce my lesson to my students. The BrainPop video allows the student to
gain background knowledge on who Dr. Seuss was. I also incorporate technology into the teacher modeling
portion of my lesson. This allows students to get familiar with the SmartBoard as well as touch screen devices.
If I had to choose another form of technology to incorporate into my lesson I would have my students use the
computer to play an educational game on counting.
