Let equation of the demand curve be:
Qd = a + bP
So, ΔQd= b ΔP
Thus, b= ΔQd/ ΔP
Consider price increase from 9 to 10:
ΔP= 1; ΔQd= -2
S0, b= -2/1 = -2
Therefore, Qd = a - 2P
Putting any combination of price and quantity we get:
18= a- (2x9)
=> a=36
The demand function is therefore:
Qd= 36-2P

2. Demand function: Q= 34-2P
Find the theoretical maximum quantity of good
demanded and theoretical maximum price of the
good.
5
The maximum quantity that can be demanded is when
the price is zero
Q= 34- 2P
= 34- (2x0)
= 34
The theoretical maximum price is the price at which
quantity demanded is zero
Q= 34- 2P
0= 34- 2P
2P= 34
P= 17

5. Supply Function: Qs= 2p-100
Find the price below which no milk will be supplied.
Answer
Means Quantity supplied should be zero.
Therefore, 0= 2P-100
P= 50
9
6. Demand function: Qd= 100-3P
Supply Function: Qs= 2P-20
Find the equilibrium output.
If price is 20, would there be surplus or deficit?
10
At equilibrium Qd= Qs
Therefore: 100- 3P= 2P- 20
5P= 120
P= 24
When p=24, Q= 100- (3x24)
=> Q= 100-72= 28
If price= 20,
Qd= 100- (3x20)= 40
Qs= (2x20)- 20 = 20
Therefore, shortage= 40-20=20

Calculation of Elasticity
For calculation of elasticities:
1. If the direction of price and quantity change is given, use
the initial quantity and price as base
Elasticity (ep): %change in quantity/ %change in price
ep= (ΔQ/Q1)x100/ (ΔP/P1)x100
ep=(ΔQ/ ΔP) x (P1/Q1)
2. When the direction of change is not given, use the mid
point formula.
Elasticity (ep): %change in quantity/ %change in price
ep=[ΔQ/(Q1+Q2/2)]x100/ [ΔP/(P1+P2/2)]x100
ep=(ΔQ/ ΔP) x (P1+P2/Q1+Q2)

7. The demand schedule for a product:
Price Quantity demanded
3 20
4 16
5 12
6 8
7 4
13
P1= 5, P2= 6; ΔP= 1
Q1= 12, Q2= 8; ΔQ= -4
ep= (ΔQ/ ΔP) x (P1/Q1)
ep= (-4/1) x (5/12)= -1.67
-1.67 0r in absolute terms 1.67- represents elastic demand

8. The following demand schedule is given:
Price Quantity Demanded
3 20
4 16
5 12
6 8
7 4
12 21
13 18
16
Since direction of change is not given:
ep=(ΔQ/ ΔP) x (P1+P2/Q1+Q2)
Now, P1= 12, P2= 13, Q1= 21, Q2= 18
ΔP=1, ΔQ=-3

10. Demand function for ball point pens is
Qd= 100- 0.5P
Find the price elasticity of the good at price Rs. 10.
18
We have
Qd= 100- 0.5P
∂Q/ ∂P= -0.5
If P=10, Qd= 100- 0.5x10 = 95
ep= (∂Q/ ∂P) x (P/Q)
= -0.5 x 10/95 = -0.052
-0.052 0r in absolute terms o.o52- represents inelastic
demand
