I. Read the following text and then answer the questions.

If you want to organize a social campaign it is important to consider the following steps:

1. Before starting any action it is necessary to have a clear idea of the main purpose of the campaign, what
you want to convince people of, what you want to communicate and offer, which solutions you are
proposing.

2. Identifying the people the campaign is directed to: young people? adults?, the general population? Here,
you must consider the characteristics of the people you want to reach.

3. Designing the type pf media (radio, television, newspaper, etc.) and materials to be used (ads, poster,
leaflets, conferences, etc.).

4. Once you have agreed on what is the purposed of the campaign and what resources you will use, it is
necessary to get down to work and elaborate posters, advertisements, and, in general, the material you will
use in your campaign.

5. The most important part of the process is to present to the public the materials that were produced to inform
or convince of something. This is when the material produced is broadcasted, or when the audience hears
the announcements or lecture.

6. Although evaluation of the campaign is the last part of the process it should not be planned until the end.
Before starting the campaign it is necessary to agree on how you are going to find out whether the
campaign achieved its purpose, if you reached the expected goal.

Text adapted from the book of Español 3, Estela Valle y Sara Silva, published by Editorial Castillo.

1.- Do you agree with the order of the steps from the text why or why not?

2.- Do you think there is another way to start a campaign, how would you do it?

3.- Why do you think it is important to consider the characteristics of the people you want to reach?

VASILISA THE BEAUTIFUL

Retold by Joep van der Werff

Once upon a time, in a town in Russia, there lived a man with his wife and his daughter.
The little girl was very pretty and everybody called her Vasilisa the Beautiful.

When the girl was eight years old, her mother got very sick. Mother called Vasilisa to her
bed, gave her a small wooden doll and said: “My precious one, take this doll.
It is magical. Do not show it to anybody and do not speak about her. When you have a
problem, give her food and something to drink, and she will help you.” Then the mother
kissed her little girl.

The mother died the next day. That night, Vasilisa hid in a closet with a small piece of
bread and some water. She said to her doll, “Eat this and drink this.” The doll came to
life. She ate the bread and drank the water. “What is your problem, girl?” said the doll.

Vasilisa said to the doll, “My name is Vasilisa. I am terribly sad. My mother died and I
cannot sleep.”
“It is normal to be sad, Vasilisa. At night, problems look bigger. Go to bed, rest, and
tomorrow you will feel better,” the doll said. Vasilisa did what her doll said and she felt
better the next day.
Vasilisa´s father married again the following year. His new wife was widow, a mother of
two girls. But the girls were ugly and the mother was envious of Vasilisa beauty.

PRODUCT: BILINGUAL DICTIONARY

I. READ THE TEXT AND THEN ANSWER.

The bilingual dictionary

BASIC ORGANIZATION
A bilingual dictionary is a useful tool when you study a foreign language. It can help you add new words to your
vocabulary and learn the meanings of unfamiliar words that you see or hear.

Bilingual dictionaries are different from monolingual dictionaries because they have two parts. The first part
contains the words of one language with the meanings of the words in the other language. The second part has
the opposite organization. For example, in a bilingual English-Spanish dictionary, one half of the dictionary
provides English words with Spanish meanings, and the other half gives Spanish words with English meanings.

In an English-Spanish dictionary, the words are arranged in alphabetical order in both languages. Remember
that in English and Spanish, the alphabets are almost identical!

The top of each dictionary page has guide words. These words show the user the first and last words on that
page. The user knows that all of the words on the page are listed alphabetically between the two guide words.

HOW TO USE A DICTIONARY

a. Go to the language section you need.

b. Take the first letter in the word and look up that letter in the dictionary.
c. Find the guide words.
d. Take the second letter in the word you need and scan the list of word entries.
e. Take the third letter in the word and scan the guide words.
f. Scan the different definitions and choose the one that matches the context of the word you don´t know.

THE WEATHER FORECASTS

The weather forecast lets us know what the climate will be like on a certain day or in a certain place. Science
and technology help meteorologists predict the weather. They might say that it will rain in Australia tomorrow
or that there will be blue skies and sunshine in Oaxaca, Mexico next week. Meteorologists will give an
estimation of the approximate temperature for the weather worldwide.

Weather reports allow people to prepare for the future. If you know it will be cold tomorrow, you can plan your
outfit accordingly. This allows people to plan for vacations and day-to-day living. For example, if you are
going on a holiday to Canada and the weather forecast predicts snow, you know you will need to bring warm
clothes with you.

Where did the plants and animals go?
By Ethan Bull

Have you ever dreamed of discovering a new type of animal or plant? Have you ever wondered how many types
of animals and plants disappear each day? Scientists say that 30,000 types of animals and plants disappear
each year. That means 80 types of animals and plants disappear every day!

Those are large numbers! Have you ever wondered how scientists know all of these numbers? Scientists collect
data, or information as they do research in different parts of the world. Then they use this information to predict
what they think is happening in the whole world.

How do scientists tell people about the information that they have? Scientists sometimes use graphs. Graphs
use lines, bars, or even pies to make information easy for people to understand. Graphs also make the
information more interesting.

Look at the graph on this page. It shows how many types of animals and plants have become extinct since 1800.

SALE
by César Gutiérrez

For the best salespersons, selling is not only getting someone to buy something, they consider it helping,
informing, guiding and teaching the client. They claim is a profession that has allowed and promoted cultural
progress. For example, the famous Silk Route would not have been possible without taking into account that
trade was very important.

If someone claimed that all people sell something, he or she would be right. Some people sell products, others
sell beliefs, and some sell services. Without the sales activity, people would still be part of nomadic tribes. The
exchange of goods and services is a key for growth and wellbeing, for culture, and for the development.

Perhaps people have a bad image of the salesperson´s work. He/she may be considered coaxing, foolish,
deceitful, manipulative, and somewhat scammer.

But this concept is false and wrong. The only thing that he/she could be is a good or bad sales clerk.

The following is a common dialog between a salesperson and a customer:

Sales clerk: Hi, good morning! My name is Francisco Pérez, and I work for Mc Tools Company. Let me
introduce you the products I can offer for your benefit… I must tell you, these products are the most accurate you
can find in the market.
Customer: Well, I am sorry, I do not have enough time now, but you can come back tomorrow.
Sales clerk: Perfect! What time?
Customer: At 10 in the morning.
Sales clerk: Thank you, see you tomorrow then.
Specialists in the area believe that selling is a form of communication that has a specific purpose: to create a
customer.
They also think that the art of selling involves several important aspects, such as:
_The selling technique
_The organization and management of the sales team
_ Promotion techniques or displaying
It is important to know that there are two ways of selling: direct and indirect sales. A salesperson must have at
least three basic characteristics. He/she should be:
_ Active and willing to work on his /her profession
_Sociable and capable of listening to customers
_ Imaginative and confident
The following is an example of a conversation between a salesman and a potential customer.
Salesman: Hello, are you Mr. Rodolfo Morales?
Customer: Yes, what can I do for you?
Salesman: Mr. Morales, this is Ricardo Torres´ speaking from Castillo Insurance. Could you dedicate five
minutes to listen to me? I would like to offer you the cheapest and the most complete insurance policy in the
market for your car.
Salesman: Ok, please do not take more than five minutes.
Customer: Right! First, I must say… (After a few minutes, Mr. Morales agrees to purchase the insurance policy.)
Salesman: When could a sales clerk visit you in order to show you our special offers?
Customer: Monday at 7:00 P.M would be fine.
Salesman: Perfect Monday at 7:00 it is… It was pleasure to talk to you. Have a nice day Mr. Morales.

1. Cartoons are drawings which tell a story.

There are cartoons in newspapers which tell about the news. Sometimes they are funny. Cartoon strips
are called comics. They are in newspapers too. Each day the characters are drawn to tell a funny story.
The words that the characters say or think are put into ‘balloons’ above their heads.

2. The cartoons that we see on television are called animated cartoons or animations.
Lots of pictures are drawn and then put into film. When the film is screened through a projector the
characters seem to move.

3. Cartoons have been drawn for hundreds of years. At first they were in newspapers so that more people
would buy the papers. The person who draws the cartoon is called a cartoonist. They use lines to show
how the characters move. Different lines on the face show how the characters feel.

PRODUCT: A MANUAL TO FACE AN ENVIRONMENTAL EMERGENCY

I. READ THE NEXT TEXT AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS.

Surprising events happen in life every day, and some are emergency situations that
require preparations and quick thinking in order to avoid injury or death. How can we
know what to do in case of an emergency? How can we learn to prevent emergency
situations and minimize harm when an emergency actually happens?

Emergency procedure manuals.

Introduction

A good way to learn how to stay safe is to read an emergency instruction manual.
There are two types of emergencies that people are likely to encounter in their everyday lives. The first type
is a natural emergency, and the second is a man- made emergency. This manual contains information
about both types of emergencies.

It is important to know what to do before an emergency happens. In addition, it is important to pay attention
to emergency procedures information in public places. Finally, you should put emergency phone numbers
near every telephone in your house.

EARTHQUAKES
Earthquakes are not predictable! They often happen without any warning. Scientists cannot predict
earthquakes, but they know that if an area has experienced and earthquakes before, it is likely to have an
earthquake again.

Planning for an Earthquake

If you live in a place where earthquake are likely to occur, you should be prepared.
 Pick safe places in every room of your home. A safe place is a place that will protect you
from falling objects. Good safe places are under strong tables or against interior walls.
 Practice drop, cover, and hold on in each safe place. Drop under a strong table, cover
your eyes with your arm, and hold on.
 Make a plan with your family of what to do if you are not all together when an earthquake occurs.
 Find safe places everywhere you spend your time: in your home, in your classroom, or in other buildings.
Remember that earthquake can happen anywhere at any time.
What to do during an Earthquake?
If you are indoors, first find a safe place. Then drop, cover, and hold on.
Stay in your safe place until the movement stops. Then check to see if you are hurt.
If you have to leave the building at the end of the earthquake, use the stairs. Do not use the elevator.
Watch for fires. Fires are very common after earthquakes.
If you are outside during an earthquake, stay outside. Stay away from things that might fall down, like
buldings, trees, or power lines. Stay close to the ground and cover your head.

PRODUCT: HANGMAN GAME

Brain Game
By Departamento de Proyectos Educativos del Grupo Macmillan México

I. READ THE TEXT AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS

In the Brain Game players must choose the correct Word to complete the sentence and write
it down. The game ends when at least one of the teams has completed the 10 sentences.

Instructions
1. Form teams.
2. The teacher draws in the blackboard one column for each team and writes the name of the team on top of
each column.
3. The teacher distributes the card below to each team.
4. The teacher tells the students that all the class is going to read out loud 10 sentences twice. The first time
all the class reads the sentence using the option “a” word and the second time
the group reads it using the “b” option. For example:
Sentence: Mary´s ___________ is Buzlightyear.
Option: a) boy Option: b) toy
First reading: Mary´s boy is Buzlightyear.
Second reading: Mary´s toy is Buzlightyear.
5. Each team has to choose the word that they think is the correct one to
complete the sentence. After the team has decided which word is the correct one, they have to run to the
blackboard and write it down. The students have only 10 seconds to write the word.
6. If the team chooses the correct word and writes it right, it wins two points.
7. If the team chooses the correct word but does not write it right, it wins only one point.
8. If the team chooses the wrong word but writes it correctly, it also wins one point.
9. If the team chooses the wrong word and does not write it right, then it won´t win any point.

Game Tips
1. Be focused! If your team is talking or laughing and doesn´t concentrate in reading out loud the sentences,
then you won´t be able to comprehend the difference between the pronunciation and the meaning of the
words, and thus, you might not choose the correct word.
2. Be patient! Wait for the class to read out loud the sentence two times (one with option “a” and one with
option “b”) before you try to select a word.
3. Remember! You have two opportunities to read the sentences and comprehend the meaning of the
sentence.
4. Be prepared! Before the class starts reading the sentence, establish the turns for each student of the team
so you don´t waste time deciding which student will pass to write the selected word on the blackboard.
5. Think! When your turn comes, try to understand the general meaning of the whole sentence; then maybe
you´ll guess the meaning of the word you don’t know.
Strategy
1. If you don´t know one word, try to understand the general meaning of the whole sentence; then maybe
you´ll guess the meaning of the word you don´t know.
2. If it´s better for you, read silently the sentence in the card. When you read silently you concentrate better.
3. Try to recognize the words in English that are similar to Spanish.
4. Don´t be afraid to write on the blackboard the word that your team chose. If you write it right, you´ll feel
great.
5. If you are not sure about how to write a word, think about easier words you know that are spelled like the
one you don´t know; maybe the spelling of the simpler words will help you guess how to write the word
you don´t know.

Stepanie´s New Camera

By Ethan Saul Bull
Illustrated by Félix León

I. READ THE TEXT AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS

Hi! My name is Jenny. I live in Michigan, USA. I go to school at

Franklin Middle School and I really like taking photographs of nature
and my friends. I take photos all the time and then I load them onto my
computer and post them on Facebook, so that I can share them with
my friends. They call me Little Miss Photo at school. I love my
nickname!
I am obsessed with cameras and photos. Last summer I went to a
camp where they teach you how a camera works and how to take
great photos. My favorite photo I took there was of a butterfly sitting on
a beautiful flower.
My best friend is Stephanie. I call her Steph. She lives in the house
across the street and we attend the same school. We spend a lot of
time together.
Whenever I took pictures, Steph would come along with me. Steph
didn´t take any pictures because she didn´t have a camera.
But one day my phone rang and I walked over and picked it up.
“Hello”, I said loudly.
“Hello Jenny! Guess what my parents got me?”
“A new dog?”
“No! They got me a camera, just like yours! Now we can take photos together!”
“That´s great! I can´t wait to go to the woods and take pictures with you! Can I come over
to your house now?”
There was a pause on the other side of the line.
“Jenny?” Steph said.
“Yeah?”
“I don´t know how the camera works. Do you mind teaching me how a camera works and how to take
pictures? You know everything!”
“Sure! I can teach you everything I know!”
I hung up the phone and ran downstairs to tell my parents. It was Saturday morning and I hadn´t eaten yet,
so my parents made me eat breakfast before leaving. I was at Steph´s house about 20 minutes later.
Her house was painted blue and had a big garden in the front yard. The flowers were blooming. Steph
answered the door and we went upstairs to her room. She was really excited.
“Here it is, Jenny.”
“It´s perfect! It´s just like my camera. Let´s take a look and I can show you how it works.”
“Cool! Please teach me everything!”
I put the box down on the bed and she handed me the camera.
It was a black SLR camera. It was really nice and brand new.
“Okay, Steph. First, I´ll explain how a camera works. A camera is basically a lightproof box. When you press
the button to take a picture, the camera lets in a little light. This is a digital camera, so a little machine
senses the light you let in and records it. This is what makes the picture.”
Steph looked a little confused. “Look. When I press the button, a little
shutter opens and lets the light in.”
“Okay. That´s cool. I always wondered how that worked. So, how do I use
my camera?”
“First, look into the viewfinder, so you can see what the camera will take a
picture of.”
Steph looked through the viewfinder and pointed the camera at her bed.
“Steph, press the button on the top of the camera.”
She pressed the button and the camera made a “clicking” noise. She
looked at the screen on the back of the camera. There was a perfect
picture of her bed.
“Isn´t it easy?” I said.
“Yes! Can we go outside and take some pictures of flowers, butterflies and
trees, just like we normally do together?”
“That´s a wonderful idea!”
We both left her room and walked to her front yard. Steph carried her camera carefully in her hands. It was
sunny outside and the flowers looked really pretty. It was perfect for taking pictures of flowers.
“Do I just point the camera and shoot?”
“Not quite yet, Steph. First let me tell you a little about the light meter and the different settings for taking
pictures. This will help you take the best pictures.”
“Look through the viewfinder,” I said. “There are a few numbers and a little bar at the bottom of the image.
On one side the numbers are negative and, on the other side, the numbers are positive. Do you see the bar
under the number and dots?”
“Yeah. The little bar is exactly in the middle.”
“The middle is exactly where it should be. When you take a picture, make sure that the bar is there. This
means that you have the correct amount of light to make a great photo. If the bar is on -1, then you have too
little light and the photo will be dark. If the bar is on +1, you have too much light and the photo will be too
white or bright.”
“Oh, that is easy. I just have to make sure the bar stays in the middle of the light meter!”
“Exactly!”
I was very happy about how fast Steph was learning.
The next thing I explained to Steph was about the automatic settings on her camera.
“Do you see the little dial at the top of your camera with little pictures on it?”
“Yeah, I do. It has little pictures on it of a person, a mountain, a flower and some letters too, right?”
“Yes, Steph! Those little symbols help you set the camera for different types of pictures. The picture of a
person´s head is for taking portraits.”
“Oh really? So when I want to take a picture of a person´s face, all I have to do is turn the dial to that
setting? That is so cool! What is the one with the picture of the mountain?”
“The one with the mountain is for landscape. When you want to take a picture of a big area, like a field, a
mountain or a river, you use that setting.”
“Can you guess what the symbol of the running man is for?” I asked.
“Is it for taking pictures of people running?”
“Yes and no. This setting is for taking pictures of people or things that are moving. So it can be a person
running, playing sports or even a dog playing with a dog. When a camera takes a picture, it can take it really
quickly or more slowly. When it takes a picture slowly, it lets in a lot of light. So, at night, you want to take
pictures very slowly because there isn´t very much light, but, when something is moving, you want to take
the picture really quickly. If you don´t, it will be blurry.”
Steph looked confused, so I said, “Don´t worry about it! Just remember that if you want to take a picture of
anything that is moving, use this setting with the man on it.” Steph looked more comfortable.
“Now, let´s look at the most important setting for us, the one with the picture of a flower on it!”
I said.
“I was wondering what that one was for. I was hoping it really was for flowers!”
“Well, it is for flowers, but it is also for close-ups. When you want to take a picture of
something small, like a flower or rock, you should use this setting. It makes really beautiful
pictures! Why don´t you try this setting with that daisy right over there?”
I pointed to the flower next to us. Steph leaned down, put the camera up to her eye and
snapped the photo. Here it is!
After this, Steph and I began taking photos together every week and she got really good. I had to teach her
a little more about other things but now she takes beautiful photos and we post them on Facebook together.

Autobiograpy

I was born in a little town outside Bristol, England.

My parents were from London and they met when they were eighteen years old. Just over a year later they
got married, they were only 19 years old. When my mother was 20 years old I was born and two years later
Di, my sister, was born.
As a child I “got lost” in my books, reading was something fundamental in my life. I also was an early writer:
I was six years old and I invented a character in a story that I called rabbit. The character, of course, was a
rabbit and he was my first hero. In the story Rabbit got the measles and was visited by a giant bee called
Miss Bee.
In Winterbourne, the town where I lived, I was very happy studying my first primary years of school, but
when I moved to Tuntshill primary school, in Gwent County, my teacher Mrs. Morgan terrified me. On my
first day of school Mrs. Morgan gave me an arithmetic test that I failed, scoring zero out of ten. I would have
scored better but I have never done fractions before. So Mrs. Morgan told me to sit in the row of desks far
to her right side. Soon I realized that Mrs. Morgan seated us according to how clever she thought we were:
the brightest sat at her left and those she thought were dim were seated to her right, the “dumb” row, as far
right as you could possible get without sitting in the playground.
As I don´t have good memories of Mrs. Morgan, I incarnate her in one of my evil characters.
Afterwards I studied at Wyedean secondary school. I was quiet, freckly, shortsighted and not very good at
sports. By far, my favorite subject was English and Languages.
I entertain my friends at lunchtime telling them long serial stories in which I and my equally quiet and
studious friends would be heroic and daring. Years later I attended the University of Extern in Devon, where
I studied Literature and French language.
It was 1990 and I was traveling alone from Manchester to London in a crowded passenger train when the
Harry Potter idea popped into my head.
During the four hours trip I didn´t do anything but think. All the details came out of my brain and little by little
that skinny boy with black hair and a pair of glasses, who didn´t know that he had powers, became real.
That same night I started to write Harry Potter and the Philosopher´s Stone.
It´s been more than 30 years since I wrote my first stories. I always wanted to be a writer. In Harry Potter
wanted to reflect that life between 11 and 17 years old can be difficult and confusing, even with a magic
wand.
How was Harry Potter published?
Joanne Kathleen Rowling tried unsuccessfully to convince several prestigious publishers to publish Harry
Potter and the Philosopher´s Stone, but in 1997 she managed to find a publisher. Since then Rowling´s
Harry Potter´s books became very popular. In 2007 Rowling finished Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
This seventh and final book in the series was published in the UK, USA and other English speaking
countries. The book is the fastest selling book in the UK and USA, and sales are well over 400 million
copies worldwide.

A Time for Spirits to come Alive

Even though the Day of the Dead and Halloween are two different holidays, from
two different cultures that may seem to have nothing in common, the fact is that
there is one thing they both share.
To find out what that is, we´ll describe the way each culture celebrates death.
The Day of the Dead is a holiday celebrated in México and other countries of Latin
America on November 1st and 2nd. Its origins go back to pre-Hispanic times. The
‘Dia de los Muertos’ is a combination of indigenous and Christian beliefs. It is a
day when the fragrance of ‘cempasuchil’ (marigold) rises from earth to heavens, as a loving invitation to
those who have passed away, to come to our world and visit on this special day.
The youngest souls call on the 1st, while on the 2nd the rest of the souls find their way home. Family and
friends gather around to prepare an altar to honor their guest, at their homes or around the guest´s tomb,
surrounded by marigolds and skulls made out of sugar and perhaps with your name on them. Rhymes are
said while the deceased´s favorite dishes are served. Candles and incense are lighted and the picture of
the deceased is displayed while his or her favorite music is sung and played.
Those days and nights are celebration. Indeed, they aim to remember and honor the loved ones who have
died, but at the same time, the Dia de los Muertos gives the opportunity to party and laugh with, and at the
face of death and time. Dancing with ‘La Catrina’ (Death), eating a slice of the sweet bread of the dead in
beautifully candle-lit decorated cemeteries’, with visitors, night and day, this is how people in Mexico
celebrate the Day of the Dead.On the other hand, Halloween is a holiday celebrated in Anglo-Saxon
countries on October 31st. When Christianity goes to England, November 1st became All Saints Day. On
that day, the church performed a mass called ‘All Hollows Een which turned to Hallowe’en or Halloween
meaning the eve or the night before the mass of All Saints Day. There was the belief that this night, the
barrier dividing our world from the world of spirits was at its weakest and spirits were able to come and be
seen in this world. Halloween is the creepy night when witches, monsters, mummies and ghosts are seen
everywhere so adults and children dress up as spooky characters to disguise themselves and trick the
spirits as to let them think it could be one of them. Tradition invites children to threaten their neighbors with
a ‘trick or treat, trick or treat, give me something sweet to eat’ tune, being candy or fruit the payment to
appease their visitors and convince them of not entering their homes or causing any mischief. Halloween
might be spooky but it´s also a time for creativity and fun; a time for families and neighbors to shop for their
favorite costumes and candy, a time to decorate their houses like haunted ones with orange and black
ornaments and spider webs and a time to hollow and carve a ‘Jack O’Lantern’ pumpkin with its candle
inside to frighten the spirits away, but beware! When the sun rises… fun must end.
So, how different are these two holidays? How similar are they? The ‘Dia de los Muertos’ honors the
memory of the beloved ones who have already passed away, but at the same time, it mocks and laughs at
the cold-cruel death. On the other hand, in Halloween people believes spooky spirits come to our world that
night which is a matter of goose bumps and something to be terrified about, but after all, everybody has a
ball.
Two different cultures, on different dates, celebrate death but beneath it all, one common thing they do
share. An invisible barrier is weakened; allowing spirits to pass, from another world hidden, the living and
the death have a blast! Spooky hugh!

I. READ THE TEXT AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS

Water, water, everywhere

How much water do you use each day? As the world´s population increases, the answer for most of us will
probably be “too much.” In many parts of the world, fresh water is being used faster than it can be replaced.
Already about one-third of the population of the world lives in countries where the water supply is dangerously
low, and the situation is going to get worse if we do not learn to conserve this precious resource.

FACT: Conserving and managing freshwater resources is politically difficult as many freshwater resources
cross national boundaries. Countries often disagree about rights of use and ownership.

But how much water does each person need?

Of course there is no single correct answer to this question. How much is enough depends on a person´s
lifestyle. For example, a person working outdoors in a hot climate will need more than a person working in an air-
conditioned office.

FACT: In all of Asia, only about 35 percent of wastewater is treated, and about 14 percent is treated in Latin
America. Even less is treated in Africa. In industrialized nations, most of the sewage is treated, but not all.

In general, the World Health Organization (WHO) suggests 0.5 to 1 gallon a day for drinking, and another gallon
for cooking and food preparation as the bare minimum for survival. However, the minimum quantity
recommended by the US agency for International Development is close to 26.4 gallons per person per day!
During the twenty century, the number of people in the world tripled. If we don´t change our lifestyles and learn
to conserve, there is going to be a global water crisis in the near future. Some scientists predict that more than
half the people in the world will be living with a severe water shortage by 2032. Our domestic, industrial, and
agricultural use of water may lead to environmental disaster. It is extremely important that we begin to protect
water like any other scarce resource.
In the domestic sector, people in developed countries use ten times more water than those in less developed
countries. Excessive amounts of water are wasted as taps are left running and hoses are used in gardens.
However, in less developed countries safe drinking water is inaccessible for more than one in six people. For
families already living in poverty, a lack of safe drinking water is an added burden and danger.

FACT: The World Watch Institute estimates that every minute, 300,000 gallons of raw sewage are dumped
into the Ganges River, the primary source of water for many Indians.

Infectious water borne diseases are responsible for 80% of illnesses and deaths in the developing world.
Approximately 15 million children die each year due to water-related illnesses. How is this possible? Well,
pollution plays a big part. Some two million tons of waste per day are disposed of in open freshwater sources.

FACT: The ancient Romans had better water quality than half the people alive today.

As many as 2.6 billion people on the planet do not have enough water for sanitation, and nearly 4,000 children
die each day as a result of water-borne diseases. There is concern these figures might rise.
However, research suggests it is in agriculture where problems are going to be the most severe. Agriculture
accounts for an overwhelming 80% of world water consumption, and an estimated 60% of the water used for
irrigation is wasted.

FACT: More than 50% of all water projects fail in the first few years.

Much of this waste is because of leaky canals, evaporation, and improper water management, but fertilizers and
pesticides used in farming also contaminate freshwater resources.
In developing countries, farmers use two times more water than in developed countries, but produce less food,
and it is possible malnutrition will become a serious problem. Population growth also means that we are going to
need extra water for industrial use such as generating power in electrical and nuclear facilities.

FACT: In sub-Saharan Africa women can spend 15 to 17 hours a week searching for and collecting water.
This means less time for activities that generate income.
Is it too late to avoid crisis? Not yet, but it is likely we will have to change our attitudes and habits. There are
many changes we can make. For example, by simply placing a bucket in the shower when we bathe, we can
collect the water that is wasted and reuse it in the garden and for cleaning.
We can also reduce water use by changing our diet. Did you know it takes 100 liters of water to grow one
kilogram of potatoes, but 13,000 liters to produce a kilogram of beef? By switching from a meat-based diet, we
may save thousands of liters of water each year. It is up to each of us to do our part to help conserve water
resources. We have to become more aware of our responsibilities as water consumption increases.

FACT: More people in the world own cell phones than have access to a toilet. As cities and slums grow, the
situation is going to get worse.

Increasing public awareness is key. Authorities know re-education is needed. Governments can help by
providing economic rewards in poorer countries to use water-safe practices that conserve freshwater resources.
In developed countries, it is difficult to accept that there is a problem when there is constant access to free-
flowing water, but with re-education, we can learn to live more water-friendly lifestyles.

FACT: Nearly 97 percent of all the world´s water is salty or otherwise undrinkable. Another 2 percent is locked
in ice caps and glaciers. That leaves 1 percent for all our needs.

There is a limited amount of fresh water available. The challenge, however, is not that there isn´t enough water –
it is how we are going to manage the water there is. Governments and ecological movements are already
cooperating to meet this challenge. They realize the future is at stake. But there is much more to be done. Are
you ready to help?

The brothers

Paco and Isaías are brothers. They come from a small village in Michoacan.
Paco is in the second year of high school, and Isaías is in the third year of
high school. They really love each other but they argue a lot. Well, like a lot
of brothers do! But this year, Paco goes to boarding school in a town two
hours away and Isaías stays in the village with his mom and dad. So things
are quite quiet in the house without Paco around, because Isaías has no-
one to fight with.
There are over a hundred children in Paco´s boarding school. The school is
a very special place. Paco sleeps in a dormitory with his classmates. The
school provides them with all their books and school supplies. They eat there, they shower there, and they play
there. It´s a great school! Every day, Paco gets up very early and the first thing the monitor says is “Make your
beds, please.” You must be responsible in this school. Everyone must follow the rules to keep things organized.
Paco puts on his uniform, and combs his hair for the day. He gives his shoes a good polish before going to the
dining room for breakfast.
Back at home, Isaías gets up quiet late for school. His mom and dad say several times, “Get up, Isaías!” Finally,
he sits up in his bed and scratches his head to wake up. “You should get up ten minutes early,” says Mom.
Then, Dad says five times, “Get dressed and comb your hair!” Isaías is hard work! Finally, he is dressed…but his
shoes are dirty. “You should clean your shoes,” says Dad. Isaías cleans his shoes quickly and then goes down
to the kitchen for breakfast. He says hello to the pet dog on the way.
In the boarding school, Paco is now ready for breakfast. He goes to the breakfast table and looks at the food.
There is some fruit, but there aren´t any bananas today. He really loves bananas. But there are some apples
and pears. They remind him of home. There are few grapes, too. There is also some toast and some cereal with
milk. And there is a big glass jug of orange juice. He takes hold of the jug and pours a glass of juice. There are
some boiled eggs, too. He takes one and then he takes two slices of toast, puts them on a plate and spreads
some butter on them. Mmm! Delicious! He sits next to a friend and they chat and have breakfast together. After
breakfast, they must remove their dishes from the table and pile them nicely on the cart for the kitchen.
Meanwhile, Isaías is sitting at the breakfast table at home. He sneakily grabs the remote control and turns on the
TV. Mom says, “Turn it off!” Isaías turns it off angrily. “What´s for breakfast?” he demands. “The same as always
Isaías,” says Mom. He wants two fried eggs, a piece of toast, and an orange juice. Mom makes it. But Isaías
doesn´t help. When the egg is ready, he eats it up. “Oh! The yolk is runny! I prefer it hard,” he complains. Well,
tomorrow make it yourself!” says Mom, and walks out of the kitchen. Isaías walks out of the kitchen, too. He
doesn´t pile his plate in the sink; he leaves it on the table. Mom shouts from upstairs “Wash the plate, Isaías!”
“How does she do that?” thinks Isaías, “If she isn´t in the room with me?” He walks to the bathroom. “And brush
your teeth!” yells Mom from her bedroom.
Paco is now back in his dormitory. He has to brush his teeth before class. He takes out his toothbrush and
toothpaste from his drawer and goes into the bathroom to brush them. Then, he puts the things away again
when he is finished. He takes out his books, notebooks, and school supplies that he needs for class and walks
to the classroom with friends. Classes start punctually at 8:00 a. m. First class of the day is math. “Take out your
books to check the homework,” says the teacher. Great! He only gets one wrong! Well done, Paco!
Isaías is on his way to school in the village. He arrives five minutes late and the history teacher tells him off for
being unpunctual! “You must arrive on time,” he says. Oh no! He looks in his school bag. He forgot his
homework! He left it on the kitchen table! The teacher says, “Isaías you must remember to bring your
homework!” “I´m sorry!” says Isaías, “I forgot it.” His pencil is blunt and he doesn´t have sharpener. He is a
disaster.
After classes, Paco has dinner and then plays some sports with his friends. They really like to play basketball.
Paco has a basketball that his Dad gave him as a present. He bounces it, and runs and jumps. Playing sports is
fun and keeps him healthy. In the afternoon, there are special workshops and activities at school. There are
cooking, sports, and art workshops. After playing sports, Paco likes to paint, do craft, and knit. He makes some
really fun things: a matchbox town, a papier maché piggy bank, and a knitted scarf.
After school, Isaías walks home. He is sad. He misses his brother Paco. He likes to play basketball with his
brother and go to the orchard to pick fruit. He likes to play video games with his brother. He doesn´t like
afternoons without Paco. He has no-one to argue with. Maybe he should go to the boarding school as well and
then he wouldn´t miss his brother so much! But then he would miss his Mom and Dad! Life is complicated
sometimes. Some friends call on Isaías and they go and play basketball, but it´s not the same without Paco.
Paco takes a shower and puts on his pajamas. It´s night time and soon he will be in bed. Tomorrow is Friday. He
carefully packs a small bag of things to take home for the weekend. He´s knitting a new scarf for his cousin,
Sofia, so he puts the wool and needles in the bag. After classes tomorrow, his Dad will pick him up and take him
home to the village for the weekend. Tomorrow afternoon he will play basketball with his brother. He misses him,
even though they argue a lot.
It´s very late and Isaías is still watching TV. “Turn off the TV,” say Mom and Dad five times. His homework is at
the end of his bed. Let´s hope he doesn´t forget it tomorrow. Isaías doesn´t want to brush his teeth or take a
shower. All he wants is for tomorrow to arrive so he can play basketball with his brother. He sits up in bed and
tells Mom and Dad why he has been so angry recently. He tells them that he really misses his brother and he
promises them that he won´t argue with him this weekend when he comes home. He is going to make an effort
to be really nice! Mom and Dad are glad.

The Evil Mirror
By Hilda Lima

One morning Mr. and Mrs. Miranda found in an antique shop a strange and ancient mirror. The
salesman told them that the mirror had belonged to a nobleman that, according the legend, was a
sorcerer. Mr. and Mrs. Miranda smiled incredulous of what they consider a hoax and they insisted in
buying the mirror.
The Mirandas returned home, placed the mirror in the library, and showed it to their sons: Carl, who
was 13 years old and Eddie who was 12. They also showed it to their sons’ friend Mario.
Later; Mr. and Mrs. Miranda left home, leaving the kids alone. Carl, Eddie, and Mario started making
funny faces in front of the mirror. Suddenly, something unusual happened: a forest appeared inside it.
The boys were surprised. The forest was so mysterious that they felt curious. After a discussion they
decided to enter the mirror. Inside it they found a sidewalk that led to a lagoon.
Carl and Eddie dived into the lagoon wearing their underwear while Mario only took off his shoes to get
his feet wet. All of a sudden the head of a fierce crocodile emerged from the water. Mario stepped back
with a jump and screamed when the animal opened its mouth to attack him. At the same time, two
more huge crocodiles headed directly towards Carl and Eddie with the intention of eating them.
Terrified, they desperately swam to the shore. Once they were out of the water they decided to return
home. Before they realized, they were surrounded by darkness; the light hat came from the moon
shining in the sky allowed them to see owls with eyes of fire threating them from the trees.
Suddenly, the trees began to attack them. Claws tore the boys’ clothes ad hurt them. The vine of a tree
wrapped itself around Mario´s neck and started to choke him. He took it out and managed to free his
friend form danger.
The boys ran, closely pursued by their enemies. When they reached the mirror they broke through it
and returned home. Their enemies nearly caught them but they managed to escape.
Safe at home the boys were that they had scratches all over. They discussed whether they should talk
about their strange adventure; they knew that nobody would believe them. But knowing that the mirror
was evil they decided to destroy it. They broke it into a thousand pieces with a baseball bat swearing
that they would keep the secret forever.
When the boy´s parents arrived they told them that, unintentionally, they had broken the mirror while
they were playing. They explained that the scratches in their face and body were due to the glass
pieces that flew when the mirror broke. Their parents believed them.

Rediscovering Board Games with Friends and Family

One of the best things about board games is that they bring people together. Board
games are a great way to get family and friends, young and old, together. They
encourage valuable social skills and get people talking. A game night lets you slow
down and enjoy yourself. If you don´t like the result, you can always have a rematch.
Playing boards games is l a great way to broaden your range on interests and learn
something new. You can play cultural trivia games or sports trivia games. There are
also games with questions about modern inventions and science that challenge the
mind. If you only want to have a good time and bond with friends and family, there are games about music
and singing.
Board games are not expensive; you can use them over and over again, and they are a great way to get
people talking and interacting with each other: All you have to concentrate on is having fun with friends or
family.
So what not shake up the old routine and do something new? Call some friends over and enjoy some
unexpected fun. You will be surprise at what a game night can do for you. You may want to have a special
afternoon or night to play with your friends and another with friends and family. Fortunately, there is an
endless list of board games, more than enough to suit everybody´s tastes and provide many hours of fun.

PRODUCT: REPORT ANTHOLOGY OF HISTORICAL EVENTS

I. READ THE TEX

One of the most unforgettable events in the history of the United States by someone who was
actually there.

When I woke up on November 22nd, 1963, I saw that it was a truly beautiful day. I had been excited about
this day for quite some time. The weather had been excellent all morning, and when President Kennedy
arrived in Texas, the sun was still shinning and there wasn´t a single cloud in the sky.
The streets were lined with hundreds of people and everyone was happy and excited about the president´s
visit. We had arrived early- my dad, my older brother, and I, and we had a good view of the president´s car
when it turned around the corner. All the children, including me, were cheering and waving as the car came
down the hill. I could see the president´s smiling face.
Then all of a sudden, there were three loud shots, like firecrackers. Nobody seemed to know where they
had come from. Everyone was looking around, trying to understand what the noise was. It seemed to come
from a large building behind me. A first, I thought people were setting off fireworks in celebration. Of course,
I was terribly wrong. I started to get scared and I held on tight to my dad and my older brother.
When I looked down the street there was pandemonium. People were running, screaming, and shouting,
still trying to figure out what had happened. The president´s car had accelerated down the street at terrific
speed, and I remember feeling sad that I could no longer see him. All the security agents were yelling
instructions and trying to move people into a safe area. I started to feel even more afraid. Nobody was
smiling anymore.
I can´t remember much of what happened after the shooting. It all went by so fast. My dad took one of my
hands and my brother took the other and they pulled me through the crowds. There were so many people
there to see the president, I´m surprised we made it out alive. We had to walk home because a lot of the
streets were closed and there were policemen everywhere trying to keep everyone calm.

The Sleeping Beauty

Edited by Piper Watty

Once upon a time there was a king and queen who for a very long time had no children, and when at length
a little daughter was born to them they were so pleased that they gave a christening feast to which they
invited a number of fairies. But, unfortunately, they left out one rather cross old fairy, and she was so angry
that she said the princess should die when she reached the age of sixteen, by pricking her hand with a
spindle.
All the other fairies present, except one, had already given the princess their beautiful gifts, and this last one
said she could not prevent part of the wicked wish coming true; but her gift should be that the princess
should not really die, but only fall into a deep sleep, which should last for a hundred years, and at the end of
that time she should be awakened by a king's son.
It all happened as the fairies had predicted. When the princess was sixteen years old she saw an old
woman spinning and took the spindle from her to try this strange new work. Instantly she pricked her hand
and fell into a deep sleep, as did everyone else in the palace. There she lay in a bower of roses, year after
year, and the hedge around the palace garden grew so tall and thick that at last you could not have told that
there was a castle at all.
At the end of the hundred years a king's son heard of the castle and the enchanted princess who lay asleep
there and determined to rescue her. So he cut his way through the thick prickly hedge and at length he
came to the princess. When he saw how lovely and how sweet she looked he fell in love with her and,
stooping, kissed her lips.
At once she awoke and with her the king and queen and all the courtiers, who had fallen asleep at the same
time. As the princess was as much taken with the prince's appearance as he was with hers, they decided to
be married. And so the wedding was celebrated the same day with great pomp and ceremony.

Should children have cell phones at school?

“There’s a wealth of reasons why cells should be prohibited during the school day: students have been
caught using them for cheating (by texting or storing crib notes on them); texting their friends (the new
version of passing notes in class); playing games in class; calling in bomb threats and leaving messages to
get themselves excused; harassing and bullying. Students have been beaten and robbed of higher-priced
phones, while in some schools phone models have become markers for status or ridicule.
It is true cell phones can be used to download homework, get reminders and notices about due dates, and
access school learning sites and bulletin boards. But all of these are uses outside of classes, not during
school.
Some argue that cell phone can also be used as calculators, but this is a silly point. Most phones have
functions on par with calculators you see for $5 in the checkout line. If a class allows calculator use, then
calculators should be used, not a device (like a cell phone) that can also be used for cheating, playing
games, texting, etc.
Web-enabled cell phones can allow students to do research online and access dictionaries and other
references. But this sort of work is part of homework, not classroom work. Also, this is a further feature that
can be used for cheating.”

are going to have to get very good grades at school this month and you are going to have to get the money

“Please, please, please, mom. I promise that I will make the biggest effort at school, and I will study even
harder than I already do. And I have an idea about getting money. We can have a garage sale and I will sell
