Title: America before and after World War II primarily focusing on “the new deal” and the great
Depression.
Subject: US history
Introduction/overview:
Students will:
1. Recall, discuss and build on what they have studied about the United States during the period
Prior to World War II in order to compare and contrast key themes from the era
(Isolationism, the Great Depression, etc.) With that of the United States immediately
Following the war (superpower status, the United Nations, the economic boom, and changing
Economy).
2. Be introduced to many of the key terms and themes of the period 1945-1989.
3. Become familiar with the other members of their group and begin work on the culminating
Activity.
Learning outcomes:
1. The different vocabulary terms that takes place post world war II and after WWII.
2. They will understand the key concept of each word and the time that specific vocab word took
place.
3. The student will understand the political debates of the post-World War II era; therefore, the
student will be able to Evaluate Roosevelt’s New Deal policies.
Curriculum alignment:
1. Read texts by using reading strategies (i.e., prior knowledge, identify key
vocabulary words, context clues, main ideas, supporting details, and text
2. Read for a specific purpose (i.e., detect cause & effect relationships,
compare & contrast information, identify fact v. opinion, and author bias).
Materials:
For teacher (me): Markers for white board(located on my desk), “the new deal” handout, cause and
effect handout, McGraw-Hill text book “United States history and geography” by McGraw- hill
education, white board, and quiz handout
For students: Flash cards for vocab words, pencil, highlighters for notes (if they do not have
highlighter I will provide them with highlighters), notebook for notes, and poster for cause and effect
group presentation (one per group)
Technology:
For teacher (me): Flash-drive, PowerPoint (for notes), elmo/projector, a set of iPad for students (one
per group), and a computer.
For students: Their assigned iPads for research (school will provide this).
Assessment:
I will pass out a 22 question quiz on the great depression to see if they actually gained
knowledge.
