MATERIAL’S MICROESTRUCTURAL ANALYSIS

0. PRE-REPORT.

Answer the next questions (hand written), built on the previous lecture.

1) With your own words explain the steps to make a metallography.

2) Which is the difference in the metallographic preparation out of different materials (alloys)?
3) What is the relevance of the chemical attack?
4) Which etchant would you use for carbon steels AISI 1018, 1045, and Aluminum 6061?

1. OBJECTIVES

a) The student will learn and apply the procedure to prepare materials samples for further metallographic
analysis.
b) The student will learn the cautions there must be in order to develop a good preparation of samples for
metallographic analysis.
c) The student will observe through the optical microscope the micro-structure of different samples.
d) The student will infer the type of material, thermal and processing history from the micro-structural analysis.

2. MATERIAL / EQUIPMENT

-Steel samples
-Cast die
-Welding
-Bakelite
-Sandpapers 200, 400, 600 and 800
-Aluminum oxide
-Nital
-Equipment for the preparation of samples
-Metallographic microscope

3. PROCEDURE

a) The instructor will explain the general theory according to the practice. The instructor and the student
will elaborate metallographic samples.
b) The metallographies will be observed in the microscope, identifying current phases and some other
characteristics.
