Pak shells villages in Poonch
JAMMU : Pakistani troops heavy shelled
forward posts and villages along the Line
of Control (LoC) in Poonch district of
Jammu and Kashmir overnight, police
said on Sunday. �e shelling from across
the border in Balakote sector started
late last night and continued for over
two hours, a police official said. Indian
troops effectively retaliated. �ere was
no immediate report of any casualty or
damage in the shelling, the official said
adding forward villages and posts were
targeted by Pakistan during the cease-
fire violation. �ere has been a spurt in
cease-fire violations along the LoC and
International Border (IB) in Jammu and

form govt in Meghalaya
SHILLONG: NPP president Conrad Sang-
ma met Meghalaya Governor Ganga
Prasad on Sunday evening and staked
claim to form the government in the
state with the support of 34 MLAs in
the 60-member Assembly. Meghalaya
threw up a fractured mandate yester-
day with the ruling Congress emerging
as the largest party, marginally ahead
of its rival, the National People’s Party
(NPP), an ally of the BJP at the Centre
and in Manipur. “We met the Governor
and submitted a letter of support from
34 MLAs—19 of the NPP, six of the
United Democratic Party (UDP), four of
the People’s Democratic Front (PDF),
two each of the Hill State People’s
Democratic Party (HSPDP) and the
BJP and an Independent,” Sangma
told reporters outside the Raj Bhavan

on Sunday exhorted confidence that
India will retain its position of fast-
est growing economy in the coming
decades like China did in the last three

Parliament’s Budget Session
is likely to begin on a stormy
note with the Congress and
other opposition parties set to
raise the issue of multi-crore
financial scams involving
public-sector banks in both
the Houses. �e two Houses of
Parliament will meet on Mon-
day after a month-long recess
in the session. Opposition par-
ties would seek an answer from
Prime Minister Narendra Modi
on how the Punjab National
Bank (PNB) fraud and other
banking scams took place and
how the government failed to
stop them.
�e government, on its part,
is seeking to counter the op-
position’s offensive by bringing
the Fugitive Economic Offend-
ers Bill. �e legislation, once
passed, will grant powers to
the government to attach as-
sets of persons declared fugi-
tive. �is will include benami
assets too. While the opposi-
tion has not planned any joint
strategy so far, it is likely to
meet in a day or two to chalk
out a plan for the Parliament
session. Sources said that while
the financial sector and bank-
ing scams would dominate the
proceedings in both Houses,
issues related to crime against
Dalits and women, farmers, the
economy and unemployment

In a statewide campaign to
rehabilitate children en-
gaged in begging, Punjab
State Commission of Child
Rights Protection claims
to have rescued as many as
1,084 juvenile beggars in the
last two months.
Gurdaspur had the high-
est incidence of child beg-
ging with 282 children hav-
ing been rescued from the
district, Pathankot district
was at second spot with 146
child beggars. Only nine
child beggars were rescued
from Ferozepur district.
Of the rescued chil-
dren, 214 were admitted
to schools, while 260 were
let off after counselling,
Commission chairman
Sukesh Kalia said. Also,
the parents of these chil-
dren were made aware of
their wards’ rights and
were warned against us-
ing them for begging.

asked the deputy commis-
sioners to constitute teams
of officials to implement
the Punjab Prevention of
Beggary Act, 1971, in the
respective districts.

to improve the scenario has
set up district child protec-
tion units which collaborate
with the department of the
women and child develop-
ment for the rehabilitation
of such children.
Pannu, who is monitor-
ing the campaign against
child begging in the state,
appealed to the public not
to encourage illegal prac-

SRINAGAR : Over one lakh students in Kash-
mir Valley received free coaching from the
state’s Education Department during win-
ter vacations, officials said here on Sunday.
�e students participated in the winter
camps established by the department, the
officials said. �ey said the department
had established 901 winter camps for the
purpose of providing free coaching to stu-
dents. Free coaching was provided to stu-
dents from Class I to VIII in these camps for
which 3,600 teachers were engaged, the

while two others were evacuated safely af-
ter they were buried by an avalanche near
Farkin Top in north Kashmir’s Kupwara
district on Sunday, police said. A JCB ma-
chine working on the Farkin-Keran road
near Farkin Top was hit by the avalanche,
a police spokesman said. �e JCB operator,
identified as Amerdeep Singh, was criti-
cally injured, he said. Singh was shifted
to a medical facility, the spokesman said,
adding that two others, Shakoor Ahmad
Piswal and Mohammad Sumander Mir,
both residents of Farkin, were

SRINAGAR: �e education department in
Kashmir has come out with an academic
calendar to offset any loss of academic ac-
tivities due to law-and-order problems and
other unforeseen circumstances this year.
“We have devised an academic calendar for
entire 2018 session so as to compensate for
any losses due to unforeseen circumstances
or law and order issues,” G N Itoo, Direc-
tor School Education Kashmir, said. He
said according to the new calendar, if any
academic time is lost, it will be made up by
keeping the schools open on subsequent
holidays. “We learnt from the events in 2016
and 2017 and have prepared this calendar
which is time-bound and target-based,”

ago, an official spokesman said on Sunday.
�e state-of-the-art tertiary care hospital
was inaugurated in April 2016 by Prime
Minister Narendra Modi. It caters to patients
across more than 20 different specialities
with special focus on cardiac sciences and
oncology. Started in partnership with Shri
Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, doctors
at the 230-bed hospital have performed
105 heart surgeries, 400 angioplasties,

campaign via social media to include their
mother tongue ‘Gojri’ in the Eighth Schedule
of the Constitution of India. “We are looking
at a highly innovative campaign whereby
social networking sites such as Twitter,
Facebook, YouTube, WhatsApp, Instagram
and other media will be used as a tool to
spread our long-pending demand across
India,” founder of Tribal Research and Cul-
tural Foundation, Javaid Rahi said. Rahi, a
noted Gujjar scholar, said initially the focus
would be to unite the Gujjar community
residing in 12 states of north-western India
for a joint struggle to get Gojri recognised at

mechanical. �e present globalisa-
tion is cold and calculative which
needs to change.
Protectionism and imposing
sanctions on other countries are
manifestations of selfishness,
greed, arrogance and vengeance
of capitalist consumer culture.
Russia, China and India have con-
demned protectionism and impos-
ing punitive sanctions. All these
countries have demanded changes
in the present globalisation to make
it more fair and equal. �ese coun-
tries should join and lead the new
globalisation which is based upon
principles of equality, justice and
mutual respect. We cannot undo
globalisation but we can make it
better for everybody.

suspended on the directives of Uttar
Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath
on graft charges, a state government
spokesperson said on Sunday. �e ac-
tion was taken in response to a video
showing the two men Sanjay Gupta
and Subhash Mani Tripathi accepting
bribe. �e video was aired on some news
channels on March 3, the spokesperson
said. Both the tehsildar and clerk were
suspended with immediate effect, and
disciplinary action was taken against
both of them. Instructions have also
been issued to register an FIR against

Man found dead inside school
NEW DELHI: A 45-year-old man who
worked as a night watchman at a school
in Seempauri area here was found dead
today, police said. �e body of Devi Dayal
bore head injuries inflicted by a blunt
object, they added. Dayal’s body was
found inside a room in the school at
around 9 am, an officer said, adding
that an empty liquor bottle, two glasses
and food were also lying nearby. �ere
were no signs of forced entry, he said.
Dayal worked in the accounts unit of a
transporter, and stayed in the school as
a guard at night, the police said. CCTV

Conman allegedly killed
CHANDIGARH: �ree unidentified men said
to be from Kerala allegedly stabbed to
death a suspected conman from Rajast-
han and injured two of his associates in
a Haryana village. Police said the three
Rajasthani men from Naugaon village in
Bharatpur district had called the men
from Kerala to Nagla Bhramin village in
Haryana’s Palwal district to con them on
the pretext of selling them a car. Farukh
Mev (35), called the prospective buyers
to the Haryana village to sell a used car.
It is not known what transpired when
the two sides met but the men from
Kerala stabbed the suspected conmen
and fled. Farukh died on the spot and
the other two – Nuru Mev and Arif Mev
– were injured. �ey are in a hospital in
Faridabad. Farukh’s body was handed
over to the family after the post-mortem

According to the latest data available
with the depositories, the FPIs with-
drew a net amount of Rs 11,037 crore
from equities last month. �is is the
highest net outflow by FPIs since Sep-
tember 2017, when they had pulled
out Rs 11,392 crore from the Indian

LOS ANGELES: A skin bacteria
commonly found on healthy
human skin may help protect
against skin cancer, scien-
tists say. “We have identified
a strain of Staphylococcus
epidermidis, common on
healthy human skin, that
exerts a selective ability to
inhibit the growth of some
cancers,” said Richard Gallo,
professor at University of
California San Diego in the
US.
“�is unique strain of skin
bacteria produces a chemi-
cal that kills several types
of cancer cells but does not
appear to be toxic to normal
cells,” said Gallo. �e team
discovered the S epidermidis
strain produces the chemical
compound 6-N-hydroxy-
aminopurine (6-HAP).
Mice with S epidermidis on
their skin that did not make
6-HAP had many skin tu-
mours after being exposed
to cancer-causing ultraviolet
rays (UV), but mice with the
S epidermidis strain produc-
ing 6-HAP did not.
6-HAP is a molecule that
impairs the creation of DNA,
known as DNA synthesis,
and prevents the spread of
transformed tumour cells as
well as the potential to sup-
press development of UV-
induced skin tumours. Mice
that received intravenous
injections of 6-HAP every 48
hours over a two-week pe-
riod experienced no appar-

Letting kids to taste alcohol may up drinking-related risks

WASHINGTON : Parents, take note! Allowing
your children to occasionally sip and taste
alcohol may increase their risk for drink-
ing related problems in late adolescence,
a study has found. �e findings contradict
the common belief that letting kids sip
and taste alcoholic drinks is harmless, and
might even help to promote responsible
drinking later in life.
Sipping alcohol with adult supervi-
sion in childhood, so often viewed as
innocuous, can be harmful when kids get
older and age into peak periods of heavy
drinking. “Early sipping and tasting is
predicting increased drinking behaviour
in young adulthood,” said Craig Colder,
a professor at University at Buffalo in
the US. “Sipping and tasting alcohol in
childhood with adult permission is as-
sociated with more frequent drinking
and an additional drink per drinking
episode,” Colder said.
“It’s not only how often they’re drink-
ing and how much they’re drinking in
late adolescence, but the negative con-
sequences related to drinking increase
as well, like being hungover, getting into
trouble, arguing and fighting,” he said.
Roughly a third of all children before
the age of 12 will taste alcohol with their
parent’s permission.

ly, perhaps four or five times a year. “If I
say a kid sips or tastes an alcohol drink a
couple of times a year, few people would
bat an eyelash,” said Colder. “But the data

Addictive Behaviors, support educational
interventions already developed by other
researchers to reduce sipping and tasting
among children. Early sipping represents
what is often a child’s first direct experi-
ence with drinking, yet little research has
examined the long-term impact of this
behaviour, in part because most studies
do not measure early sipping and tasting
alcohol with parental permission. “Al-
cohol use without parental permission is
typically initiated around age 13 or 14,”

stretch from Kanyakumari
to Kashmir -- on foot, and
all alone. Meet Srishti Bakshi who
has taken up this mission to create
awareness about the security and
social status of women in India.
Srishti, an MBA under her belt, had
a dream job and was living in Hong
Kong with her husband. However, a
horrific incident in which a mother
and daughter were gang-raped after
being dragged out of their car near
Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh in 2016
left a deep impact on her. She decided
to give up her high profile job and cre-
ated ‘CrossBow’, a movement which
aims to empower women and make
India a safer place for them.
“I would feel ashamed at the fact
that India is not considered to be a
safe place for women. �is thought
would often make me feel angry. I
wanted to do something for women
in India,” Srishti, 30, told IANS in a
telephonic conversation.
“I do not have any experience as a
social worker. I came back to India and
talked to my family about my plan. I
hail from an army background, and
my parents and husband were ex-
tremely supportive of the whole idea,”
she added. But before she plunged into
her mission, Srishti had to dedicate a
whole year preparing herself for the
journey. She had to undergo exten-
sive physical training, muscle repair
therapy, before she started off.
“I had to research a lot and talk to
as many people who have multiple
years of experience in the field of
social work. I used to sit with my
father with a huge map of India and
chalk out places I would cover,” Sr-
Starting her journey on September
15 last year from Kanyakumari in
Tamil Nadu, Srishti has already walked
through states like Andhra Pradesh,
Telangana, Karnataka, Maharashtra,
Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.
Currently she is in Delhi where she
will be hosting an event at India Gate
in association with the National Com-
mission for Women (NCW) on March
4 ahead of International Women›s
Day on March 8.
On the road, her target is to cover 25
km to 30 km every day. However, the
walk is not her sole aim. She conducts
workshops in villages for women and
organises sessions in schools and col-
leges to make the people aware of the
situations and circumstances faced
by women.
“�e workshops are not just meant
for women, but for men and young
boys as well; I feel it is equally im-
portant for them as well to believe in
women›s empowerment. It is neces-
sary to bridge the gender gap between
a boy and a girl,” she said.
“A number of factors like domes-
tic violence, open consumption of
alcohol, lack of police force and lack
of empathy towards women victims
are some brutal truths that I have
encountered till now,” she said.
Srishti said her journey till date is
no less than a “logistical nightmare”.
“It is both mentally and physically
very draining. I meet more than 100
people every day, talk to them, dis-
cuss their issues and try to come up
with solutions; all this requires a lot
of mental strength. �en comes the
physical part, even if I am extremely
tired, the next morning I am again
charged up to resume the walk,” she
explained.
