Letter from the Board Chair

and the President/CEO
Dear Friends:

Thanks to our friends and supporters, the International Institute of New England provided critical services
last year to people from 70 countries, including Afghanistan, Bhutan, Burma (Myanmar), Democratic Republic
of Congo, Eritrea, Iraq, Somalia, Sudan, and Syria.

In total, IINE provided case management, job training and placement, adult education and youth services to
1,920 immigrants, of whom 432 were newly arrived refugees we resettled in Eastern Massachusetts and
Southern New Hampshire.

The events of the past year showed us that the vast majority of New Englanders support new Americans and
want to welcome them to our communities. In 2017, more people volunteered, learned about immigration
issues, attended our events, met our clients in person, and donated to the International Institute than in any
other time in recent memory.

When the President issued an executive order that attempted to shut down the refugee resettlement program and ban people
of predominantly Muslim countries from coming to the U.S., thousands protested in Copley Square while hundreds of others
rushed to Logan and Manchester airports to help foreign travelers. The legal system listened, and a federal court in Boston
halted the order.

After the President empowered the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency to accelerate arrests and
removals of undocumented immigrants who have committed no crimes, 1,600 people came to our storytelling performance
series, Suitcase Stories®, to hear new Americans share their journeys of coming to the United States. WGBH taped one of our
shows and broadcasted it on public television stations throughout the country.

Every time a government official degraded public discourse with untruths about refugees and immigrants, we responded with
factual information on how important new Americans are to the economic growth of our region and the nation as a whole.
Thousands opened our emails and read articles from multiple sources on immigration.

While the administration was canceling the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program and ending Temporary
Protective Status (TPS) for Salvadorans and others in our programming, 332 volunteers were helping our clients learn English,
complete citizenship applications, prepare for job interviews, and accompany refugees to medical appointments.

We cannot thank you enough for making a difference in the lives of nearly 2,000 new Americans in 2017. Like you, we
are inspired by the people we serve, those who have survived war, persecution, the loss of family members and violent
displacement from their homes, and still have the tenacity and optimism to rebuild their lives from scratch in the United
States. Their resilience motivates us to do our best work, and it moved thousands of people like you to get involved with the
International Institute of New England.

the Thein Family

Yet, from the moment they landed in Lowell in the spring
of 2016, Nai Win Thein, Mi Thein Si and their three children
quickly became known among the IINE staff who supported
them as “the family who always smiles.”
Although unable to communicate in English upon their
arrival in the U.S., Nai Win and Mi’s enthusiasm to establish
a new life for their children was evident at every step.
During their first meeting with their caseworker and a
translator, the couple smiled as they described their long-
term goal of making sure their three children have access
to an excellent education. The eldest, at ten years old,
acquired English skills in a flash, and like many immigrant
children, she took the lead in initiating new conversations.
More than a year after their arrival in Lowell, Mi works full-
time at a local linen company, and Nai Win cares for their
two-year-old son while the older children attend school.
As they take their last steps toward total self-sufficiency,
the Theins have taken advantage of IINE’s Individual
Development Account (IDA) program. The program, funded
by federal government, contributes matching funds for
refugee families to start businesses, purchase homes
or vehicles, or attend college. The Thein family is saving
for a car so their family adventures can extend beyond
downtown Lowell.

But her parents were not far behind her. They both enrolled
in IINE English classes and soon their smiles to staff were
accompanied with greetings of “How are you?” and “Nice to
see you.” They progressed quickly in language and cultural
orientation classes, and in just a few months they were
ready to find jobs.

Working with the International Institute’s employment

team, the couple decided Mi would seek a job first while the
father watched the children and addressed some medical
issues.

During those first months, the five Theins went everywhere

together including the children’s school bus stops, medical
appointments, and the grocery store. At their one-month

The Traegers

Turning disillusionment into action, and finding new friends along the way.

Disillusioned by the national debate on refugee policy during
last year’s election, Mark and Heidi Traeger decided it was
time to learn more about refugee resettlement in their own
backyard. Last winter they attended IINE-Manchester’s
A Home for All event at the Millyard Museum and were
moved by the personal stories shared by the refugee
panelists.
Inspired by their experience at the event, the couple
decided to demonstrate their support for immigrants by
raising awareness of the challenges refugees face.
The Traegers hosted a house party for their friends and
neighbors at which IINE staff and newly arrived refugees
spoke. The event raised money to support IINE’s services,
introduced the community to several refugee families,
and helped people learn more about the U.S. refugee
resettlement program.
The Traegers are unassuming and don’t think that what
they’ve done for the refugee community in Manchester is all
that extraordinary.
But their generosity and kindness goes beyond financial
support. The value they place on relationships, on
understanding where people come from and what they
have endured, helps empower refugees to know a wider
community of people.
During a year of uncertainty and insecurity for refugees and
immigrants, it is heartening to see the Traegers and families
like them offer a warm New Hampshire welcome to new
Americans.

But Mark and Heidi didn’t stop there. They also worked with
IINE staff to plan a Nature Walk on their own property. IINE
brought nearly 200 refugee children and parents to the
Traegers’ home in the country to hike, fish, and learn more
about New Hampshire’s great outdoors.

They did it again a few months later when they hosted

another busload of children who arrived for a fall adventure
of fishing and Halloween fun.

The Traegers’ refugee and immigrant guests at the

warm welcome they received from Heidi, Mark, and their
neighbors.

 Suitcase Stories®

“If someone had told me : ‘you would be a refugee’... I wouldn’t have believed them.”
The audience at the Umbrella Arts Center in Concord, MA,
was spellbound one spring evening listening to Raied Hudfi
recall his journey from Baghdad, Iraq to Lowell.
Dr. Hudfi was part of IINE’s inaugural Suitcase Stories®
performance, and his storytelling left a significant
impression on all who witnessed it. IINE launched the
“Suitcase Stories®” series last year to raise awareness
about the extraordinary personal journeys of many
newcomers to the United States.
Produced in partnership with Massmouth, a Boston-based
storytelling organization, Suitcase Stories® featured foreign
and U.S.-born residents sharing stories with audiences in
Eastern Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire.
The International Institute and Massmouth are grateful to
Raied and all the storytellers, volunteers, and sponsors who
brought the new program to their community. Each story
was as unique as the teller. With venues filled to capacity,
the series raised funds to support IINE’s work with refugees
and immigrants. WBUR, a National Public Radio station in
Boston, did a program on the series, and PBS television
stations aired selected performances on stations across
the country.
Suitcase Stories® will continue to travel in 2018 and beyond.

In 2017, the show traveled to Concord, Arlington, Lowell,

Needham, and Brookline, MA, and Manchester, NH.
The performances featured 39 diverse community voices.

Tellers included both professionals and newcomers to the

craft, including International Institute staff and clients like
Raied.

In his performance, the doctor bravely shared how his self-

described “perfect life” in Baghdad was transformed in one
single afternoon. While treating a patient, a man stormed
into Raied’s exam room and demanded that his wife be seen
first. When Raied refused, citing the clinic’s waiting list, SUITCASE STORIES® 2018
he unknowingly became a target of the local militia, and

Resettle Together

A growing network of volunteers dedicated to welcoming newcomers

Resettle Together is an expanding network of churches and shutdowns occurred. They spent their first six months
community groups helping refugee families rebuild their navigating their new country with their American friends —
lives in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. as their eldest son describes, “our new family.”

In 2017, Resettle Together partners collected dozens of

household kits to furnish apartments, countless bags
of winter wear, and hundreds of diapers and backpacks.
Partners organized welcome dinners, Thanksgiving meals,
Mother’s Day lunches, and other memorable social events
for refugee families. The most significant development in
2017 was a Welcome Team pilot with The First Church in
Belmont Unitarian Universalist, championed by volunteer
Sam James.

In the Welcome Team model, eight community volunteers

partner with IINE to support a newly arrived refugee
family on their path to self-sufficiency. Teams volunteer
for a period of six-months and their groups contribute a
stipend to the refugee resettlement program. During 2017,
welcome teams were paired with newly arrived families
from the Congo, Somalia, and Syria.

The Syrian family nearly missed their match experience

altogether. The Mahmoud family was expected to travel in
late January, days after the federal travel ban was imposed.
