Monitoring System for Water Content in oil
Hardware
A.GENERAL
005
The objective of this manual is to help set up and use O-WACS, a measurement equipment
of water content in oil. For this reason, usage procedure and safety regulation shall be fully
understood by reading this manual before installation and operation. This manual includes
the instruction for installation, operation, maintenance, and repair
The copyright of this manual belongs to Doosan Engine Co., Ltd. The Manual which is
provided together with O-WACS system shall not be used for other purpose without without
the prior consent of Doosan Engine Co., Ltd.
NOTE
This note symbol represents the know-how for using the function and
efficiency of O-WACS system under optimum condition.
Safety Instuction
This safety instruction symbol represents important matters for using
O-WACS system safely. The matters with safety instruction symbol should be
understood before using O-WACS system and strictly followed. If the safety
instruction is not followed, it may bring about damages to equipment or injuries to workers.
It is announced that Doosan Engine Co., Ltd. shall not be liable for any problems caused by
not following the instruction above.
Safety Instructions for Use of the Alarm System with High Voltages
- In order to insulate Alarm system from driving power supply of low voltage, it
shall be installed at high location for insulation.
- E ach housing should be completely closed while operating moisture
analyzers, and it is prohibited to open and close it at ones disposition.
- As the protection class of open housing is corresponding to IP67, direct
contact to components can bring about an electric shock by high voltage.
Accordingly, during operation, opening & closing housings and contacting
the components should be avoided. When deems necessary, the work shall
be executed only by a qualified person.
B.PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
006
O-WACS system is specially designed to measure the water content in oil. It may be applied
to hydraulic equipments or engine lubrication systems, and it plays a very important role in
guaranteeing long-term efficiency of diesel engine lubrication system and maintaining main
bearings.
A capacitive semiconductor sensor of high precision which measures water content in oil
is applied to a sensor measuring water content. Accordingly, a w measurement by O-WACS
system is based on long-term stability and superior quality of capacitive sensor elements.
The water content measurement value in oil shall be measured with water activity (aw, Actual
water content in saturated oil) of relative humidity concept. aw = 0 indicates oil without
water, aw = 1 indicates completely saturated oil. Through such a measurement method, any
troubles can be prevented in earlier stage by detecting high water content when monitoring
the water content in oil of ships’ engines or important machines on a real-time basis.
O-WACS system executes temperature T of the measured oil at the same time, and the
measured value of aw & T can be freely transmitted in output signal of 4~20mA through
option board, and the system can also be extended to outside systems or composed of
monitoring and control devices. In addition the contact output for alarm and control is also
provided. (Three built-in contact output : normal, alarm, fault)
Users can monitor water content in oil at local by display equipment or at distance by online.
As the VFD module for extreme industrial circumstance is applied to display, both stability
and visuality are provided. As network is easily composed through RS485 communication,
and monitoring and data record can be done in long distance.
O-WACS is able to log data automatically by using Data Logging and Analysis software after
storing temperature, humidity, due point on nonvolatile memory installed inside O-WACS
Control Unit at designated intervals of users.
B.PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
007
1) A function to Measure Water Activity
Based on high precision and stable operation, actual water in oil is measured by aw which
is at the basis of saturated point where actual free water is produced. aw = 1 is activated
water content of oil which is saturated with water content.
3) Alarm Outputs
Such a relay output provides the structure which can easily transmit water content in oil
to host system.
1) Control(Display) Unit
It computes the data received from control unit by program algorithm, and displays the
measured value through LCD monitors, and at the same time send the output signal to
relay output.
2) Sensor Unit
It is installed at Main Lub. Oil inlet pipe of engine, and detects water content in oil with
internal Humidity Sensor.
Junction Box
Control Unit of water measurement equipment can be installed with bolt and nut. Please
refer to the Mounting Dimensions of C-2 for detailed measurements. When O-WACS is
used as a water measurement equipment for ship engines, installation of engine body is
possible. And it shall be installed at the place between frame box and cylinder frame where
workers can easily access and check it by using L-bracket. Also, to minimize shock by the
vibration of equipment, it is recommended to insert vibration proof pad. When using it for
the purpose of general application except ship engine, it can be installed at any place where
user can easily manage it
When the power supply is normally applied on O-WACS, aw & temperature T information,
present data, and time are shown on screen. In order to approach a manual setup table,
please softly push the menu button for about 3 seconds. Then, you can change
parameter setting value in order.
Please refer to E-2. Parameters Setup for more details.

J.Menus and Main Features
027
This software was developed by Doosan Engine in order to adapt O-WACS system to
customer requirements, display and log measured values, and configure the parameter in
an MODBUS protocol.
Upon starting the software, the Digital Mode starts automatically and temperature, water
activity, alarm levels, and data log interval are displayed.

onitoring : Display the received measurement data from control unit in digital or as
a graphical form
- It is easy to read the current measurement data on the LCD monitor
even from long distance by MODBUS protocol.
Alarm : Display a list of warning and alarm
History : Download and display the recorded measurement data in control unit
C
onfig. : Configure communication port and control unit parameters
The water activity and temperature collected and stored in the database of the O-WACS
System can be viewed on the PC by using two different modes. These include the graphical
form shown in Fig. J-2 and the digital value in Fig. J-1.
Digital mode : W
ater activity(aw) and temperature are constantly displayed in precise
figure
Graph mode : W
ater activity(aw) and temperature are constantly displayed in graphical

2) Alarm Status Views
Besides the alternative digital and the graphic modes for viewing measurements, the alarm
list can be obtained in tabular form. For Alarm Status Views, it is possible to check the major
factors such as Date, Time, Water Activity, Temperature and Alarm Status.
If the water activity is over the alarm level, alarm lists are generated in tabular form and the
lamp on the right is blinked. When all the boxes on the left are checked, blink is stopped.
The O-WACS system features will be automatically back-up and restored its database which
contains configuration data, data concerning water activity and temperature measurements.
With automatically backup, backup copies are stored on the hard disk of your PC. And the
stored data is displayed with two different colors in Fig. J-4.
- The red line is temperature of oil
- The blue line is water activity in oil
NOTE
If you want to activate automatic backup, you must check the “Auto Save” box
shown in Fig. K-1.
To download restored data in control unit, first input file name and
then click the “Download from O-WACS” button.
K.Parameters Setup
031
K-1. Control Unit Parameters
By Using Config. Mode(Window), you can easily read and change the parameter such as
Date, Time, Alarm Levels, and Offset Values for simple operations.
There are two ways to express unit of measure for quantifying water content in oil. As
traditional and absolute unit, one way has been ppm(parts per million) unit. By definition
ppm is an absolute moisture parameter that describes the volume or mass ratio of water
to oil. However ppm unit has a big weak point that it can’t explain any variation in oil’s
saturation points in the dynamic system.
The other way to express unit of measure for quantifying water content in oil is Water
Activity(aw). aw can be described as the amount of water in a substance relative to the total
amount of water
In definition,
aw = p/p0
Where p = relevant fluid partial pressure, p 0 = saturation steam pressure of net water
content at the same temperature
As the numerical formula shown above, aw will be changed by the variation of saturation
point which is dependent on temperature. In the view of water content in oil, aw will indicate
more actual water content in oil than absolute moisture parameter(ppm).
To do this calibration method, you must buy a calibration kit. Please refer to
the G. REPLACEMENT PARTS / ACCESSORIES for ordering number
