FULL-DAY ARM SEMINAR PRESENTED BY PAUL NUGENT

ROTOMOLDING MATERIALS:
PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE
AUGUST 6: SOUTH BEND, IN AUGUST 8: BUENA PARK, CA
What’s New in the World of Rotomolding?
A broad overview of the latest technology in molds, materials, machinery and products
from around the world and all the latest conferences. Where the latest trends are,
technical tips and innovations and new ideas from rotomolders on all six continents.

Rotomolding Materials: Past, Present & Future

Rotomolding enjoys good growth and opportunities in many sectors but has fewer
choices in material selection than other plastics processes. This seminar takes a look at
the history of materials which have been tried and tested; the fundamental properties
required of materials for rotomolding; the current range of rotomolding materials
used around the world; their typical properties which must be considered and new
materials which are currently being developed or have potential for rotomolding.

The Past
A brief history of the introduction and development of materials from the 1950s
through to modern times will look at the success of polyethylene as the main material used in the rotational molding
process. In addition, a range of other materials which have been tested over the years but have not remained
commercially viable will be discussed. We can learn from what molders have tried before!

The Present
The modern selection of materials which are currently available around the world is reviewed. This highlights the
selection of grades developed by major suppliers along with a discussion on the role of compounders and distributors
in the development of the industry.

Fundamental properties of polymers, including viscosity and elasticity, which are critical for rotational molding are
addressed to explain the suitability of different materials for rotomolding and also how the effect of processing
parameters can be critical for long-term performance.

Additives and color are critical aspects of materials which are often overlooked during the design and material
selection stages of a project. The types of pigments, additives and methods of addition which are available to molders
and their influence on properties is reviewed.

The Future
New materials are being developed by major petrochemical companies and also by smaller compounding companies
focused solely on the rotomolding process. Future grades include bio-polymers, new versions of polyolefins and also
engineering materials. This seminar takes a look at some of the properties that would be useful for rotomolders and
the potential for these new grades.
